Toured this church with a small group and tour guide from Chamber of Commerce. The church is beautiful and worth spending some time looking at the paintings, stained glass windows and enjoying the craftsmanship.

You'll want to see this church as part of your Schulenburg Chamber tour of the Painted Churches. Stunning!

This was the fourth church on our guided painted church tour. This is a Czech church and is equally beautifully adorned. As with all of Czech churches there was a representation of the Infant Jesus of Prague. This one was a statue located on a side altar. The church recently underwent massive renovations but the ceiling is original and has never been restored. Don't forget to look up!

The St. Mary's Church of the Assumption church is one of the several painted churches in Central Texas. This church is in Praha TX and 3 miles east of Flatonia and 10 miles west of Schulenburg. My husband and I self-toured the church on a Thursday afternoon. The doors were different from the other painted churches. There were paintings of 4 men on each of the exterior doors. The front door was unlocked so we walked on in. There were four other people visiting at the time we were there. The interior was awesome. The altar area was gorgeous with white painted wood furniture trimmed with gold. There were many beautiful stained glass windows. The paintings on the walls and ceilings were so beautiful. The ceiling was light blue with paintings of angels, churches and flowers. Services are held in the church. Highly recommended.

This is one of the famous "painted churches" of Texas. Situated in the town of Praha (Prague), in an area settled by Czechs and Germans, this church was Czech, whereas St. Mary's of High Hill was German. The church has just recently been restored, and is beautiful. It is perhaps the most impressive of the 4 churches generally open to the public (though my wife and I personally liked St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Dubina best, due to its beautiful blue sky/starry ceiling).

While the church is beautiful, don't miss the memorials in the yard, as they tell a story. From this very small community, ten young men died in WW2 and are memorialized in 3 grottos. It is the highest percentage death rate in any community. They weren't all killed in one unit, but in multiple units at different times. One wonders how the Texans of German and Czech ancestry reacted to the war, and to each other, as Hitler conquered Czechoslavakia, and then as their town's young soldiers died to liberate Europe.

We could not believe how beautiful this church was on a recent weekend visit. The ornate artwork, both in statues in in the painted walls/ceilngs, was done by true artisans and remniscent of European churches. Must see!

This is one of the painted churches in Schulenburg TX. Outside is just a building but inside it is absolutely beautiful with all the small town charm. There is a schoolhouse, a cemetery and small altars all around the grounds. Pictures are better than words.

Both the interior and exterior of St. Mary's in Praha, one of the region's "painted churches", are impressive. The interior ceiling, we were told, is the original grayish-blue paint. The outside of the church has clearly been restored and repaired, and it's worth a few minutes to visit each of the three small stone chapels that together honor the nine men from the area who were casualties across multiple fields of battle during World War II.
To get to Praha, we went west on 90 from Schulenburg, a pleasant enough drive in itself.
