“Not bad for a dayhike”

Stephen F. Austin State Park

I visited this park because it was only a 45 minute drive from Houston. I wasn't very impressed at first. I drove the campground loop and it looked more like a large city park. The trails, however, provided a nice walk for a few hours. I walked the Cottonwood, Copperhead, Riverbend, Brazos, Raccoon and Opossum trails. They're each under a mile, but together provided a decent afternoon walk. I didn't use the restrooms, but the park was clean and well-kept. The park staff was also friendly. Not the kind of place I'd want to camp, but nice for a walk.

First time to this park and it had rained a couple of days prior to visit. We didn't have a lot of time but did want to take the trail to the river. Started out okay but boy did it get muddy fast. Some places we had to walk on the edge in the grassy area and hope we didn't get into any poison oak/ivy. So far so good. Did make it to the river but muddy trek back in another direction. There was ample water faucet area to clean off. Parking was easy and park kept up. Will need to return when trails are dry to fully enjoy.

We visited this park on our way home from a weekend trip several weeks ago. The park staff was extremely knowledgable, courteous and friendly. They were eager to provide advice and information about the park. The park itself was clean and well maintained. The historic site adjacent to the park was informative and interesting. The site host was extremely knowledgable about the history of the area and had several wonderful suggestions for other places we might want to visit. Although the historic site is small, it still offers insight into the Battle of San Felipe and other perinant historical data. The host informed us that the Texas Historical Commision has purchased property nearby and plans to build a museum to house area artifacts that they are currently not able to have on display. We look forward visiting the museum wihen it opens and plan on returning to the park very soon.
