We left middle Tennessee to see south texas and stayed in several parks. Goose island was our favorite. We have a 35 ft motor home and stayed on the bay side. Don't try the grove side if you have a big rig. The birding was awesome lots of photo ops and we did get to see whoopers. The town of Rockport was so sweet. We wish would have had more days planed to stay at goose island. If you go to Rockport check out the Main Street area. Wonderful beach shops and the people were super friendly.

Windswept Oaks, birds, winter texans, birds, scenic views of bay, causeway, fishing, sunning, and more birdwatching is available here. Seriously, huge Whooping Cranes are seen in the adjoining neighborhoods. The Big Tree is an ancient LiveOak that is estimated to be close to 1,000 years old.

Visit in the winter months to hopefully get a glimpse of part of the only remaining flock of Whooping Cranes. Most of flock visits National Wildlife Refuge to the North but several visit this area.

You gotta see the 1000 year old tree and read the historical information about it. It is close to the water in a parklike area and is very interesting. There are many windswept oaks in this area and are very enjoyable to view.

Good photo opportunity! It was very uncrowded and you have to see the tree to believe it. Easy access & good parking.

Goose Island State Park is a beautiful place for fishing, bird-watching. and picnicking or camping on the Gulf. Great fishing pier. Seasonal birding tours are available. Also included as part of the park is the "Big Tree" site, located north of the park headquarters in the nearby town of Lamar. The huge live oak is estimated to be over 1,000 years old and has a circumference of over 35 feet. Located near the tree site are fields where Whooping Cranes can be seen in season.
