I was in Port Isabel for business over two nights, and stayed here.

You can tell that the management is slowly but surely upgrading things and keeping everything running well. The TV was new and worked well, and I was glad to have a mini-fridge and coffee maker to myself. The bed was comfortable if not luxurious, though the comforter had a rather dated design--but who cares?

My one complaint--the AC, which I did not use very much--was rather loud. Maybe that is the next thing on the list for upgrade? That having been said, it did work fine.

If you want luxury, look elsewhere. If you want the basics and a decent value, this is your place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the beach.

When we arrived early at noon we expected to have to wait to check in but our room was already ready to go. It was a bit dated but very clean. There was a flat screen TV, fridge, microwave, sink, and hot plate. Maid service every day and we never lacked clean towels. There was even breakfast if you wanted. There were no pet fees for our dog and we frequently saw the owners each day walking their Husky and asking us if there was anything we needed. We had a bay view and woke up each day looking at the ocean. It was very quiet and we pretty much never heard our neighbors. The price was great and we were able to stay an extra day since the hotels on Padre wanted $200+ per night. We plan on staying here on our next trip!!

Room Tip: Don't get the double beds unless you need it. Since we made a last minute reservation we did not...

My husband and I stayed at Southwind Inn for four nights in August. We are so glad we stayed here. It was quiet and clean and the owners (Ron & Cecelia) were so friendly and accommodating. The housekeeping staff were also friendly. We enjoyed the bbq area, the pool (which is open 24 hrs) and the view of the bay. The bed was comfortable and clean, the kitchenette area was a nice convenience, and everything worked properly (a/c, tv, fridge, shower, toilet, etc.). We liked that the floors are tiled, not carpeted, so they're clean. And we are on a budget, so the price was great. It was so worth it to stay here and drive across the bridge to SPI. We will definitely stay here again when we come back to SPI.

We just stayed 3 nights at the Southwind Inn, in Port Isabel, Texas. The rooms are a tad smaller than some other hotels that we have stayed in and they had 2 double sized beds in the room. But for the price, location, how clean it was, the friendliness of the owners, and staff it was so worth it. It is an older hotel, but well maintained and very very clean. The front side faces a cemetery (so you don't have to worry about noise, lol) and the side faces the bay. I would highly recommend this hotel to others, no breakfast but there was a refrigerator and microwave, and for the price you could still eat out for breakfast and still come out the better in the money department.

We have spent January and February at the Southwind for 3 years now. Wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. Ron & Cecelia, the owners are kind, friendly and very helpful and you can't beat the price. The room is clean and each year something is updated. Last year it was new toilet, this year it was a new flat screen TV. We choose to put the microwave in storage and use a toaster oven, electric frying pan, crock pot and hot plate. We also eat out a lot. Our room is next door to the office and across from the cemetery. Same room every year. Love the place. After our dog died this winter, the other tenants brought their dogs around for us to pat. They were all kind and friendly. We were grateful to them all. Corinne & Dennis

We can't recommend the Southwind Inn highly enough. During our month's stay in February 2013, we felt right at home, thanks to a wonderful welcome from Ron and Cecelia, the owners. It is older, but the rooms are the cleanest we have seen among all the stays we've made on road trips traveling with a dog. Each room has a kitchenette with 2-burner hot plate, mid-size fridge and microwave, which is even nicer for longer stays. Southwind tops our list as being pet-friendly, too (just ask Sinaloa, their greeter-at-the-office husky). The shaded, back grilling area is a great place to relax; the pool is beautiful and well-maintained.

One of the best parts of staying at Southwind is that other folks from across the country and from Canada feel the same way. That means they come again and again, many of them for the past several years. We met some great people, enjoyed afternoons chatting with them, and left with some new friends we'll continue to stay in touch with and meet up with again next year. You can't beat a place that's close enough to South Padre Island to enjoy the beach and gives you a quaint small-town Port Isabel atmosphere with numerous places to eat and drink within walking or a very short driving distance.

Room Tip: Two room choices are available: a king bed or two regulars. Two floors with rooms at one end overloo...

We were looking for a place to stay that was inexpensive but convenient. The Southwind Inn was perfect. We had a room on the first floor with a small kitchenette that was across the street from the local cemetery. (I requested a room with a beach view but they were all taken.) The fridge is not full size but it is more than adequate and has a nice size freezer. They do leave two combo coffee/filters for you to use in the coffee pot. There was a two burner hot plate and a microwave that was fine. (There were no other pots/pans available, so bring your own if you want to cook.) Great flat screen TV and great wi-fi. The window A/C was located in the kitchen area and was a little noisy, but not bad. It easily cooled the unit to our satisfaction. Bed was very comfy. The floors are marble. Probably left over from earlier days. The floor was a little gritty in spots although it looked clean. Management was very friendly. We asked for ice and were provided a bag of ice that just fit in our freezer. He also had hand drawn maps of the area and was very helpful. Yes, we will stay here again. I loved the location. Off the beaten path but not too far from Highway 100 which leads to everywhere. We didn't check out the pool, but I know there is one.

Room Tip: You can't just call the Southwind. You have to leave a message and they call you back or you can...
