Owner description: The Museum of the Gulf Coast celebrates the biology, history, and unique culture of the southeastern Gulf Coast, covering the region between Houston and New Orleans. There are two floors of exhibits including features on biodiversity, archaeology and paleontology. The first floor focuses on the pre-history and history of the region and the early petroleum industry. The Gulf Coast Hall of Fame includes politicians, filmmakers, and several successful Hollywood actors including Evelyn Keyes (Gone with the Wind) and G.W. Bailey (Police Academy). Animator Kelly Asbury (Beauty and the Beast, Shrek, Spirit), Karen Silkwood, and Major Tom Collins (one of the first pilots to break the sound barrier) have exhibits in this space along with accomplished individuals from many different fields (science, education, politics). There is also a rotating gallery which hosts a new exhibit every four months. The second floor showcases our decorative arts and maritime collections. We also pay tribute to artists, musicians, and athletes who have roots in this area including (but not limited to) Robert Rauschenberg, Janis Joplin, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Jimmy Johnson, and Babe Zaharias. The Museum offers customized tours and a wide variety of educational programming for pre-school children through adults.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast has many artifacts of early southeast Texas life. A treat to visit.

“Great little side trip”
Reviewed July 3, 2011

Museum of the Gulf Coast

We picked up a brochure in our hotel titled Port Arthur Easy Driving Tour. We spent a Sunday (July 3, 2011) following it. The midpoint of the tour was the Museum of the Gulf Coast. According to the brochure, the museum is a three-story, 39,000 square foot former bank. The place traces everything from “Jurassic to Janis Joplin.” My children and I enjoyed our 2 ½ hours here. The price was very reasonable; one adult and one child ticket was a total of $6.00. The first floor traced the development of the land from dinosaurs to now. Topics of interest are shipwrecks, different wars, Native American artifacts and legends, petroleum history, and bird collections. The second floor was dedicated to music and sports. Who knew so many legends had their start in the area: Janis Joplin, Jimmy Johnson, the Big Bopper, and others. It was worth the money, and it was a break from the Texas heat.

“Great place to take visitors”
Reviewed April 26, 2009

A very informative muesum, eastern gulf coast area. From early indians, to the discover of oil, ship trading and refining companies that grew out of the area. A great place to take new comers, school children or visitors from other counties. They have a short film which explains alot from the begining. Upstairs is an area dedicated to the musicians from the area, Janis Joplin and the Big Bopper to name only 2, also an area dedicated the athletes from the area, Jimmy Johnson to name one.
Very affordable, aduts 4.00, very cool and comfortable. It is a 2 story muesum, and they have an elevator for handicap. You can take pictures.
