“Couldn't find??”

Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center

I would of loved to see what this place was like. It seems cool with all these reviews. However, I couldn't find it? I followed the sign that said birding center but all I saw was a building and play ground. So I am leaving this review in hopes the people running the place can give better directions? The town has a lot of nice stores to shop at so the drive from Padre Island was not wasted. Mustang Island Park is also on the way if you decided to go there. Would of loved to went here, just could not find it.

It is located right next to the sewer plant, so watch the directions or the smell...well, you know. But worth it.

I have been birding in the Port Aransas area for a very long time. The birding center can be a great spot for observing migrant flycatchers, vireos, warblers, grosbeaks and orioles, in both spring and fall. The bushes and trees by the picnic table as you walk in often have a good variety of birds, sometimes very close. The boardwalk is good any time of year. Various water birds are easily seen. In summer Magnificent Frigate Birds will sometimes come in to drink. Least Bitterns and Purple Gallinules can be found, too. In winter it is almost a sure shot to see Cinnamon Teal in with the various ducks. There is a pair of alligators that can usually be found. One warning, for the non-birder, the smell can be a put off putting!

Short walk down a boardwalk to see a small area with lots of migratory birds. Don't forget you binoculars. Free admission with lots of parking. Appears to be barrier free. Nice quiet area.

The day we visited was beautiful, but there is a drought in Texas, therefore some species that come there were missing because wet areas have dried up. Nevertheless, it is great fun. Walkways are well constructed, and the natural habitats for the birds set up little vignettes for whatever walks into camera range. The humans in attendance are excited, yet polite. Many carry huge cameras, seeking significant close-ups of their favorite peep. It was almost as much fun watching them as it it looking for birds. Everyone was quiet as a mouse. There are a lot of places to look for birds on the island. Just get a brochure. One of the best is behind Juan's Tacoria. Eat at Juan's, the food is great.
