“51st MINI CLASS REUNION”
Reviewed October 9, 2010

Six of us who graduated together in 1959 booked three queen suites at the Holiday Inn. It's clean and comfortable, great mattresses and pillows with a very good free breakfast. And, it smells nice and fresh, too. It's only two short blocks to the beach so we walked for an hour or so every morning at 7:30 am. The staff could not have been more accommodating. One of the ladies lost her watch the morning we checked out. We all searched and could not find it. Housekeeping appeared as we were walking out the door saying she ran up to shake the bedding and found it. Thank you, thank you, thank you! On another note, the restaurant "Shells" is across the street. Fabulous food. We had bluecrab cakes with sauteed shrimp, brown rice and wonderfully prepared vegetables. Do take "Off" as the mosquitoes are out in full force in the Fall.

We have stayed at this hotel more than 10 times over the last few years. However, when we made our reservations for this year's trip, first we were told to call the corporate number. That they could not take our reservation at the hotel. So, we did as instructed and called the national number. Our trip was for August 12-15. However, to my horror as I prepared for this week's vacation I found that the hotel had charged my credit card $1200. When I called the hotel in Port Aransas they said that I would have to speak to guest relations to see what they could do because someone scheduled the wrong dates of August 5-7. That was after accusing us of making the mistake. Guest relations said the hotel charged us for being a no show, and charged us for two suites, even though we only needed one. When I called their national guest relations office they apologized and said it was an error and that they would work everything out with the hotel. However, when guest relations called me back, they said that the hotel did not want to issue us a refund. She (the guest relations person) said she could not believe how uncooperative the hotel in Port Aransas was being and that the national guest relations office would be issuing us a check for the monies we were incorrectly charged. Again, she apologized profusely for the hotel and for such a mess.

You know, when your own company has to apologize for one it's own franchise owners because they are not putting the customers needs first...that is when it is time to stay with another hotel. It's a shame that this hotel, that we have stayed out numerous times behaved like this. That's okay, in this economy, we'll just take our $1000 down the road to Best Western fron now on.

The Holiday Inn Express has good, friendly staff, and is in a great location. 5 minute walk to the beach and shops. We stayed in a deluxe room with a king bed. The room was large, clean, and good amenities (microwave, mini-fridge) and quiet. The one thing I did not like was the bed. It was not too bad but definitely not comfortable (at least for me).

We spent four nights at the HIX in Port Aransas, and had a wonderful time. We researched condos 'til we were blue in the face, and kept coming back to the HIX because of the price. Yes, it's still pricey, but it IS at the beach and it's market driven. The reason we chose the HIX over rental homes is the pool. The HIX has a very nice pool area with a 1-foot pool separate for the little ones. The pool also has a ledge most of the way around where toddlers and pre-schoolers can stand and walk (it's also nice for the adults to sit on the ledge with a cool beverage!). There is a shower and water hose near the side entrance which is nice when you're coming back from the beach. The hotel itself is on Avenue G which runs right into the beach just a few blocks to the east (there are showers there as well). We drove to the beach because of hauling a tent, chairs, grill, etc., but it's only about a 3- or 4-block walk if you're not carrying a lot of gear. We saw joggers leaving from the hotel taking their morning runs out on the beach. The hotel itself is an "L" shape with the pool situated in the crook of the "L." There is parking all the way around the hotel. Of course, the HIX trademark breakfast was great because we could fill up in the morning, grab a quick little something for lunch (hot dogs off the grill at the beach) and then have a nice dinner in the early evening. The breakfast area is very large and was not crowded - but get there early. Restaurants are close-by, and Shells -- a restaurant with the fairly-good reviews -- is across the street although we did not try it. Port A Pizzeria (awesome food) is 2 blocks away. One of the places that rents golf carts is just down the street as well. This is a very quiet hotel. We did not hear anything other than the normal doors shutting and even then it wasn't loud. It seemed the hotel was busy, too, because the parking lot was pretty full on Saturday night when we came back from dinner. We did hear some children running around upstairs (we were on the second floor), but it dissipated rather quickly (hopefully the parents reminded the kids about their neighbors). We were on the side away from the pool, so I'm sure other visitors would not like the noise -- the pool doesn't close 'til 11 p.m. Our 4-year-old daughter loved the apartment (that's what she calls hotels), and we felt very secure there. The room itself is larger than most rooms (we did not have a suite) with an ice-cold fridge and a microwave. The TV sucked, but who goes to the beach to watch TV? The bathroom was standard with a shower/tub and an adequate vanity. Another good point was the A/C. It was always the perfect temperature and not as noisy as some wall units in other hotels I have stayed. There is an ice machine in each hallway that we used to fill our small cooler each morning before we headed to the beach. As a bonus, we accidentally left our pillows behind and after a quick call, the clerk said they would mail the pillow cases COD (we didn't care about the pillows). They arrived in Dallas two days after we left the hotel. The only negative I can see is that there is no place to hang out -- except the pool -- if you want to just kick back with your family or friends. That's the advantage of renting a condo or house -- and the HIX is strictly a hotel. All in all, if you just need a quiet, comfortable place to sleep, HIX is perfect.

Had a 2-room suite with bedroom door for privacy. Very nice place with excellent service and a delicious breakfast. Only about an easy 1-1/2 block walk to the beach.

We travelled for spring break to San Antonio and wanted to spend a few days at the beach. I chose Port Aransas from other reviews and the Holiday Inn Express from the many good reviews on Trip Advisor. The desk clerk Ruchel was very helpful in booking 2 adjoining rooms for our family. Beds were very comfortable. One of the rooms was a king/handicapped room. The bathroom was remodeled and nice-no tub, but had a lip for the large shower so I'm not sure how someone handicapped would get in it...couldn't roll in. I had looked into the many condos in the area but was apprehensive as it seemed to be a hit or miss in terms of cleanliness and facilities. We were not set up for cooking, so the Holiday Inn was our choice. It was a five minute walk to the beach. The facility seems quite new and clean. The hotel was very quiet during the week we were there. We did not hear any noise between rooms, but did hear smaller children running around upstairs in the morning. We ate at Shells across the street which was wonderful....huge portions. Breakfast at the hotel was typical Holiday Inn fare which was fine, and the woman working there was very friendly. We used the outdoor pool and hot tub several times....all nice and kid friendly. The hotel is very convenient to all the shopping and restaurants and sights to see. Overall, we felt good about our choice of Holiday Inn Express and would recommend it to others.

A must stay! Ultra clean rooms, pool, lobby. Rooms were cozy and just what we needed. Free breakfast was fresh, hot and on time. Staff goes beyond the normal to accommodate your needs. The suites, especially for kids are the best anywhere. We will stay here from now on!
