“lot of trash”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

Sadly, a lot of trash has washed up from the ocean since the hurricane. I guess either noone cares to keep the shores clean or the volume of trash is too great to keep up with. But we still enjoyed walking along the shoreline and it was less crowded than the other beaches.

“ST JOE'S ISLAND IS A GREAT PLACE FOR A NATURE WALK”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2014

It was a nice Spring day to visit the island (which most locals refer to as St Joe's Island rather than San Jose Island). The only way to get there is via the Jetty Boat ($10 round trip) from Fisherman's Wharf. The Island is directly across the fishing jetty on the town side, and is a favorite of fishermen. We don't fish but do enjoy being outside. As other reviewers indicated, there is some trash, but most of the trash is washed in. If you walk down from the jetty there is some beautiful beach, with lots of shells and some washed up star fish. There was quite a bit of tar (perhaps because of the recent oil spill in Galveston) so it would be good to bring some older shoes you don't care too much about. You could spend an hour (at least) sitting on the jetty watching the dolphins. While we did not take our bikes to ride down the beach, next time we will. Definitely worth the time to visit.

“Rustic beach experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2014

We really had no idea what to expect at San Jose/St. Joe's island, but we found it a fun diversion and an adventure. We took the Jetty Boat over there (first departure at 6:30 a.m.), and it was just kind of fun to see who got on the boat that early. It was mostly fisherman with their carts full of fishing rods, equipment, coolers, etc. Supposedly, the fishing off the jetty on San Jose island can be good, but the day we were there, the guys said they just weren't catching much.

The Jetty Boat ride is about 10 minutes long to the island. When you arrive, they just drop you off at the dock, and you can walk/do whatever you like. As other reviewers have noted, this is an uninhabited island. There are no facilities, no services, and lots of trash on the beach. I kept thinking (as I walked along the beach) that this place would be perfect if it was just cleaned up.

But, it's still a very nice beach. Because it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, at least at 6:30 in the morning, we had it all to ourselves (since the fishermen stuck to the jetty). The sea shelling was ok -- not terrific. We were there at low tide and found a few whole sand dollars and olive shells as well as lots of common, bivalve types of shells. We'd hoped to find some sea beans, but didn't find any.

For us, the best part of the experience was the wildlife. We sat on the rocks (on the jetty) and watched a pod of dolphins fishing (bay side) and jumping. There were also tons of cormorants, brown pelicans, and egrets. It was very peaceful, and just so fun to see dolphins out in the wild. I'd go back just for that!

“pure trash”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014

There is trash piled up along the entire island. So sad. What a waste. This is a private island. If they are going to charge people to come over on the ferry boat, they need to clean up. The majority of the trash consisted of recyclable plastic bottles. They could do some good for the environment and make their island actually worth the ferry boat fee.
