This place is so cute. The rocking chairs where sweet and the town beautiful. The room a lill bit small but for a night or two fine. People very friendly loved the place. Thank you for having us. The pool was ok.

Stayed 4 nights in mid June, in the flatlets next to hotel. Room was very clean on arrival, and had a little kitchen area which might was useful for a fridge. However the room lacked iron/board/hairdrirer/ clothes hangers/drawer space/ luggage stand/chair or any form of seating. We had to chase them up for room servicing, and when it was done it consisted of towel change and bed make up only, so floor stayed sandy etc. My main gripe was the cloudy dirty pool and general air of neglect around it. When you asked for something it was addressed, but so many niggles made it not worth the effort. The pool was closed for a day for a private function ! which it later transpired did not begin until 5pm (sea weed and wind on the beach made the pool a necessity for us and was a priority reason we paid a fairly high price for this Inn) Overall the impression was one of inept management and lazy staff who just couldn't be bothered. I guess that they are full at the weekends so maybe don't feel the need to try a little harder ?

Room Tip: If central location is key then a good option, but expensive for what you get

My kids and I stayed at the Tarpon Inn again last week and once again we had another very positive experience. They have updated a number of the rooms, including the one we stayed in Fisherman's Cottage which was perfect for a family with kids. The room had its great vintage feel but with new additions to make it feel more modern and fresh. They seem to be doing a good job respecting the history of the inn with the new look of today and we loved it. We enjoyed the inn's pool right outside our door since the beaches were covered in seaweed. And the staff was very courteous and helpful. There is no need to stay in a sterile, chain hotel when the Tarpon is available.

I understand that this is an old building so wasn't expecting everything to be pristine but it could have done with a lick of paint and a new toilet seat. The walls were so thin we had to endure the drunken swearing of our neighbours on one side and other noises from our other neighbours which I won't elaborate on! The room was very small considering what we paid, no where to hang clothes and the mattress on the bed so soft I ended up with a bad back. Also our room was not cleaned during our two night stay. It also seemed that most of the residence were there to get drunk, no problem with that but with the paper thin walls the noise was annoying. On the plus side the Katy the dog was lovely and the rocking chairs were nice if people weren't outside smoking.

No tv and photos, great place to unwind and relax. Our friendly and very friendly helpful staff. Great central location. Love the fishermen suite with the red clawfoot tub, and kids had their own room with 3 beds!

Just returned to TI for a few days this May and again enjoyed it greatly. My rooms (they were busy and I have to move because I extended my stay for another night) were as expected, old fashioned but comfortable and spotlessly clean; with linens fresh and new. Even the bed mattresses were comfy.

The new owner is renovating the rooms one at a time so as not to cause too much commotion. The walls are having plaster removed to expose the original heart pine; also know as 'red pine'. Of course the pine will be left exposed when done. And I believe there some upgrades to the bathrooms also.

The manager Debra is on-site every day morning and evenings to supervise the staff and she even makes coffee early, if requested, for fishermen, beach combers, and sunbathers getting an early start.

In my earlier review I mentioned the spotless pool and back garden/lawn area, still in my opinion one of the finest in Port Aransas in terms of a quiet relaxing space, surrounded by native plants including beautiful palms. I don't say it's the largest or nosiest pool, with towel boys, chaise lounges and tiki bars (one of the huge concrete condo "housing projects" further south perhaps?). But who's to say that you can't walk next door to the Flats Bar or across the street to the Back Porch?

If what you want is the standard chain motel/hotel experience with tissue boxes and TV's. and telephones in every room there are plenty of places for you in Corpus. Most travelers carry their own shaving kits and cosmetics, including smart phones and iPods (there is Wi-Fi available at TI).

Also, if you have done much travel in the southwest U.S. and stayed for example in the Trost designed historic hotels (The Gage in Marathon, The Paisano in Marfa, or the El Capitan in Van Horn) you are not surprised at the size of the bathrooms, lack of TV's etc.

The TI is a unique historic place and, in my humble opinion, should be enjoyed for what it represents: a window to the past; a slower paced time, with more greenery and less pavement and concrete.

Disappointed in this mainly b/c it is in all the guidebooks, so expected more. Be sure to read previous reviews b/c many include things I was going to mention and re-emphasize, so just be aware of what kind of place it is. Main thing is yes, it is a cool historic place, but also true that it is not being kept up as nice as it could be. Room amenities are close to nil, like going to summer camp. Not even a Kleenex box, or a clock. No screen in the bathroom window so if you want fresh air you risk bugs. Toilet seat was very worn out, many scuffs which made it look not clean, an easy thing to replace. Exactly one hanging piece of art in room, a framed outdated festival poster; tons of old nails in the walls w/nothing hanging from them. We had room 16 and if you look online, that is it exactly: it had two beds, a dresser made of painted plain wood, and two wooden (read: uncomfortable) chairs. They advertise that the rooms have antiques; not one in this room. Glass doorknobs as someone else mentioned were cool, we anticipated more of that kind of charm on going in room but no. Pros: beds very comfy, bathroom quite large, cool to sit in rockers on porch, they had TWO suitcase racks (many high-end places don't even provide that), walking distance to many good eateries. But don't think you'll have a water view; you can see boats docked but not the water itself. And very loud right on the road there sometimes. And yes you hear every conversation and move your neighbors make, thin walls (old place so that can't be helped as much, but just be aware if you are sensitive to noise). Shower was narrow, and window had been sloppily painted (years ago) and paint marks still on the glass and desperately needed new coat; those kind of details as someone else said, easy to fix, cosmetically. And yes, way overpriced for what you get, which is basically an enclosed room to sleep in. And the lobby is not a place you'd want to spend time in; half of it they use for storage and seems like staff space. Room is small so you'd better be there to enjoy the outdoors. Strange: extra pillows in the closet but no pillowcases on them, so basically unusable. Clothes bar in closet but no hangers: why? We asked at desk and they gave us some, so why not just provide in the first place? It was also very cold when we were there and on the beds were thin thin blankets, so we also had to ask for more blankets; they gave us fluffy comforters that were quite nice (again, why not just put on the beds in cold weather). Ate at Fish House next door one night, good food and reasonable prices. Get breakfast at Eats just a block away, behind the inn. Great coffee and good breakfast sandwich. Coffee Waves also a great place to hang out a few blocks away, cool decor inside. Office hours of the place yeah, not open til 8 in morning, so too bad if you want just a simple cup of coffee earlier. They also accept pets which is good for pet-owners but not for us who listened to one bark for an hour and a half in the room below us around midnight when some inconsiderate other guests left it there; also a problem when no one at desk to complain to (they do have a # to call but by the time we got up and around to do something, it stopped). Also worth visiting just down the street: Potters on Cotter. Did see other places to stay in and around Port A and can see why this, in comparison, gets good reviews, but really could be better or not charge as much. Staff was pretty friendly and tried to be helpful.

Room Tip: Definitely upstairs to avoid noise from above; also a better view from your rocker ;-)
