“No TV - No Phones. Thank God!”
Reviewed March 28, 2004

We just spent our 8th, 3 day weekend at the Tarpon Inn. We've been going off and on since we were highschool kids for Spring Break back in the late 70's. Back then, it was the perfect spot because of a) The porch (the longest in Texas?) b) because of the affordable price and c) it's so close to the beach. It's been hit or miss over the years but things seem to be looking up since the new owners are giving the place some much needed TLC. Fast forward to 2004 - it's still the perfect spot. For all of the reasons above and then some. Small but clean rooms, (they're all different in style and our goal is to sleep in all 28!), the above mentioned porch with it's rocking chairs allways makes leaving hard. The best part - no phones and no TV! (I do bring my iPod for my bike rides - you can pick up a great, like new beach cruiser for rent right across the steet at Mike's, 13 bux for 24 hours!). The staff is small but super friendly and there when and if you need them. If you're looking for a place to really chill, unwind and truly relax then do yourself a favor and do what we do - go back in time - go back to the Tarpon Inn. It's worth every penny of the 65 bux a night!

The Tarpon is a quaint, cozy and quiet inn located in a fabulous location. Walking distance to great restaurants, the fishing wharf and a sports bar and it will take you 2 minutes to get to the beach. There are rocking chairs on the patio where you can enjoy a cup of coffee every morning or play cards in the evening. Our particular room was great - Room 25. The most comfortable bed I've ever stayed in at a hotel and best yet, the prices are more than reasonable. The Tarpon Inn is a must when you visit Port Aransas.

Only the history of the Tarpon Inn is worthwhile. Unfortunately the rooms are gloomy, inspite of the genuine antique furnishings. The a/c and the heat are awful, the street noise is an all night problem. Maybe the new owners will do an upgrade. The managers are friendly and share their knowledge and enthusiasm of the history, and that's worth a stay, but only once.

The property is very old and in bad need of repair. When we reported no hot water in the bathroom sink we were told it could not be repaired.
The Motel 8 down the street would have been so much nicer.

Summary: Delapidated old fire trap with small, I say small, dusty rooms. Dated bath fixtures and an old an unsafe, unvented, gas heater. Rocking chairs on front porch and location are the best this place has to offer. Very busy and noisy street traffic 25 feet from the door til late night. I stayed there because the wife likes atmosphere and antiques. I grew up living in dumps and would rather have a five star hotel! Free bus stops out front and one can walk to almost everything the town has to offer. Captain's Quarters , a few blocks north, would be a better choice for a hotel. Lots of CONDO's if you are well healed!

Unfortunately it rained our entire trip, so we spent more time at the Inn than we would have wanted. The rooms are small, but decorated simarly to most bed and breakfasts. The managers were very friendly and helpful. We loved the fact that all rooms opened out onto a long porch with lots of rocking chairs. The Inn is surrounded by lots of palm trees, so even though you're looking out onto a normal street (our view was a bank), it's still nice. It's very old, but the wood floors help to keep it from smelling musty like lots of places located near the water.
