I have been going to Port Royal during the summers for years now. However it had been about 3 years since my last stay. I was a little worried after reading some of the recent negative reviews but if you do your homework you can have a great stay. Here is a summary of my stay and a couple of tips. We saw reviews about ppl being checked in late so we made sure to call ahead in the morning before we made the drive up. We arrived around 1pm and were told the room wasn't ready yet (check in is at 4pm) but we got our wrist bands for the pool and were told we would get a call when the room was ready. We changed into our suits and lotion-ed up. Before we could make it to the pool we got the call our room was ready.

We had family members coming down the next day, we asked that evening, and again the next morning if they could try to have a room by us. My family showed up and they got the condo right next to us!

There is no better condo for kids, they have 5-6 different pools, 4-5 hot tubs, water slides, an awesome splash pad our daughter (just turned 1) could not get enough of. You can rent cabana's for about $100, didn't seem necessary but after we got one we decided to get one the next day also. They did a cool movie night with a big screen right by the kid pools. There are plenty of grills to cookout but they do fill up quick. A private walk way to the beach. Condo was max capacity and you could never tell!!

Tips: Call ahead to ask for early check in

House keeping is kind of hit or miss especially if you stay onsite and are going up and down for breaks/lunches/naps....so call before you head down to the pool for the day and let them know you are leaving. Usually they will go get your room shortly after.

Most of the complaints I see are about the food....i've never had their food...just easier to hit up HEB in town when you get in, stock up and cook your own meals.

Both our rooms were very up to date with plenty of room. If you have younger kids you can ask for a crib and a high chair for a small fee. Both were worth it.

I went to a different website that showed pictures of the condo's and when I reserved them I specifically asked for the one I saw. Our room #was 3604, families was 3606. Both 2 bed rooms, both very nice with an ocean view. So if you are worried about what it will look like, see if you can ask for one of those. Owner of #3604 had his own private wifi which was a bonus.

All in all, great stay as usual, I don't know why you would stay at any other hotel if you have kids and plan to be in the pool.

Port Royal is a great family summer vacation destination. The pool area is spectacular, and includes a swim up bar and water slides, with plenty of available seating. The beach area is an easy walk away and not too crowded. We stayed in clean and nicely furnished 2 bedroom with a decent side view of the gulf. We had breakfast in the restaurant and the service there was great, and the food was very good. We enjoyed the movie night in the pool as well. Would definitely recommend this place.

I believe this would've been a really great place to go but we didn't get in our room until 8 o'clock at night the first night and we had babies with us they did not charge for the first night that was wonderful but it still made for a hard time

Hi there -

Thank you for reviewing us. We took note of your review and we understand how frustrating it can be to have children and deal with a late check-in. We do appreciate you patience and we sincerely hope you can give us another try as we have made improvements in our processes. Delays may still happen, but are not a regular occurrence.

Thank you and we hope to see you again.

The kids and grandkids LOVED the pool complex.
The 2 condos we rented were very comfortable. Some advice: The 3 bedroom we rented faced the Gulf. Unfortunately you need to be on the *3rd floor* to get a good view of the beach. So ask for that if that matters to you. We were on the second floor and we could see the waves (nice) but not the beach. 1st floor would only be able to see the not-very-attractive dunes.
The pool complex was perfect for the kids and grandkids. The waterslides come in 3 sizes for the very young up to older kids. Good lifeguard coverage. Evening movie and swim night was fun. The swim up bar (accessible from the sidewalk as well) was staffed most of the time and was a nice add. The pool-side Grill was not useful for us. They were supposed to open at 1 PM (too late for us for lunch)...and were late one day, and they weren't truly ready to serve for 15 to 20 minutes after that.
When we ate at the restaurant on the 3rd floor over the lobby the food and service was very good. The bistro on the first floor near the lobby offers a limited menu but was also good. The little shop off the lobby sells an amazing array of stuff we were happy to find - from sunglasses, to kitchen supplies (e.g. sponges, aluminum foil), to food (including ingredients for basic things to cook in your room), sodas, adult beverages, beach towels and toys, etc.
We cooked in our units and found that super helpful. Our unit had a BluRay player which meant we could play Disney movies which the little ones loved. They were happy and the adults had time to visit and enjoy some conversation.
Housekeeping must be a bit understaffed for the turnover of condos - as we were 2 hours late getting into the 3 bedroom condo. The front desk were kind and helpful while we waited and gave us drink coupons and a gift card to help pay for our dinners since we weren't able to get into our units with our groceries yet. Thank goodness we bought a styrofoam cooler to put our dairy and meat products in when we stopped in Corpus Christi for groceries...although the desk offered to help us with keeping things cool. BTW, we recommend you stop at HEB Plus at Waldron Road right before you cross over to Padre/Mustang Islands...much better selection than the little grocery in Port Aransas on the island.

Overall we had a really good time hanging out and visiting with family - which was our purpose. The beach had a lot of seaweed (it happens in May/early June) - so that made it less pleasant. They obviously comb the beach to remove it periodically. There are cars/trucks that drive on the beach - so watch out for the kiddos! We rented a tent and 2 chairs from the hotel one day when the winds were gentle and the water especially calm and clear...and the grandkids and their parents really enjoyed that.
Due to the rains there were some mosquitos to deal with - in mornings especially -around the property. And they did get into the condos sometimes. Rain is rare in Corpus Christi area...so I wouldn't expect this to be normal. The little biters kept us off our balcony when winds were low.
Housekeeping came every day to take our garbage and see if we needed towels or anything else. I have to say this was a delightful surprise. I have rented condos and beach homes for years - and usually you get no service during the week unless you pay extra. So kudos to Port Royal for that.
There is no garbage recycling except for 2 bins near the lobby that take plastic bottles. That may be an issue for the island...hopefully recycling of cardboard, glass and plastics from the rooms will be available eventually.
Mustang Island (where the resort is) is only somewhat developed. The restaurants are on the north tip where Port Aransas is. We can recommend Virginia's at the Beach, and the Desserted Ice Cream Shop.
And Kody's seafood will cook the fish you catch - SUPER delicious Garlic butter option - it has a light crust. The guys caught a bunch of fish (speckled trout and snapper) out on a fishing trip - and we had multiple meals as a result. The fish cooked at Kody's was everyone's favorite! Not fancy at all - and they can't cook your catch on weekends (they are too busy).
My husband and I feel like it's a great place for a family reunion. Not a place we'd go for just the 2 of us...but great for time reconnecting and enjoying our kids and grandkids.

Room tip: Gulf view - 3 bedrooms - get a THIRD FLOOR room or you won't be able to see the beach.

The property was clean and presentable. However, my condo was not ready at check in time and me and my family where forced to wait until after 7 pm to get into our condo. I was not compensated anything for the wait. They where aware of my reservation and expected them to have our condo ready by check in time.

Hey there -

Thank you for reviewing us. We took note of your review, and we understand how frustrating it can be to have a late check in, however, there are sometimes factors that can put us behind when dealing with humans and machinery. We would much rather check you in a little late into a clean room, than into a room that was not properly cleaned.

Our team was definitely expecting your check in so we did call all late check ins to let them know rooms were running a little behind. We also offered a variety of compensation from food to resort credits.

We hope you can give us another chance so you may see our improvements.

Warm Regards,
Martha Castro
