“A little cleaning, please”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2004

After reading the positive reviews of Prince Solms Inn, we went expecting a well-run b and b. Unfortunately, we were disappointed.

We stayed in the Texas Room. At first glance, it was very nice, but closer inspection revealed a huge amount of dust behind the bed and under it. The exhaust fan over the stove in the kitchen was covered in heavy dust as well. Even the telephone was filthy. After cleaning things up a bit, we thought everything would be fine. Again, we were wrong.

The Texas Room is in an exterior building, an old carriage house I believe, and has no insulatation. All night we could hear the conversations of every patron leaving the piano bar whose entrance was about 30 feet from our room. Our next door neighbors came home around midnight and we could have participated in their conversation the sound carried so well from their room to ours. Only by running the airconditioner constantly (by setting the temperature as cold as it would go) could we block out the noise.

Finally, after paying $20 extra for each of our children (in a room with bunk beds and a queen bed?) we were served breakfasts on both days that were not edible unless bacon, bacon grease and sausage are the mainstays of your diet. One day we were served "pigs in blankets" and upon asking if the sausage was pork or beef were told that they were not sure. Of course they didn't know because it was obvious that they were bakery purchased. On the second day the eggs were cooked in bacon grease. If you like this...fine but if you don't look out.

For the price of the room, the extra $20 each night for each child (one age 10 one age 12) we expected better food, a cleaner room and insulation.

Great potential. Lots of charm. In need of much work.

Our first stay at Prince Solms Inn was in the summer of 1985. We loved it and continue to visit every year. The charm and beauty increases with the years. The owners are so friendly and eager to please their guests and the breakfasts are the best. There is nothing as relaxing as a peaceful nights rest, a wonderful breakfast, and the lovely atmosphere of the courtyard. We will continue to visit this incredible inn as often as possible.

As locals who weren't going to be leaving on a honeymoon for a couple of days, my husband and I spent our wedding night at the Prince Solms Inn. The Staff was great, the Magnolia room was beautiful, and the bed was the most wonderfully comfortable bed I've ever slept in! Don't miss staying at this establishment. It's amazing.

First of all, I have to appreciate the host! Thank you Allyson. We arrived on a Friday night right before the office closed, something like 8:59pm. (The office closed at 9:00pm, okay maybe we arrived a little after 9pm) She was so gracious and checked us in, helped us carry luggage to our room, gave us a tour of the inn, and then asked if we need anything else. We said we had not eaten dinner yet. She said "No problem. I will call restaurants and see who is still open and does not have a wait." She came back to our room and said she had us on the waiting list at Huisache Grill (I think that is how it is spelled?) So, we got settled in and then went back to the parlor (which is absolutley exquisite) and Allyson was still there. We had to wait about 30 minutes, so Allyson asked if we wanted to know more about the inn and things to do around town for the weekend. Of course we said sure! Allyson kept us company until we left for dinner. It was so nice of her to do that.We went to dinner and it was great! We had the porkchops that had a pecan crust on it. It was like eating a pecan pie with pork chops!! It was so good!Saturday comes, breakfast could not have been any better. We had Banana Foster pancakes. They were to die for!! I have never had Banana Foster's for breakfast. Needless to say, we ate it up!!! We were so full, we did not need lunch. There is a spa on site, so we had massages. They were soooo good!!!! I highly recommend it. Also, they have a piano bar downstairs in the cellar. The pianist takes song requests and he knows everything. We tried to request songs we thought he would not know, but he did. Also, you have to try their chocolate martini drink. Wonderful!!Saturday night dinner was the best. Allyson got us reservations at Myron's. They had STEAK!!! She said that the owner used to have an affiliation with Old San Fransico Steakhouses and Ruth Chris Steakhouses and that his restuarant would be like those. Well, that was an understatement. Myron's had the best steak we have ever eaten!!! Kudos for that suggestion for dinner....Oh, the room. We stayed in the cottage. It is separate for the main building. It is so cozy and cute. I think Allyson said it was built in the 1850's. It has a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and a bathroom that has one of those freestanding antique tubs. It was decorated country and victorian with antiques. Very quaint. On the front porch was a swing and a sitting area where we spent a lot of time just relaxing. We hardly left the downtown area. With the bar, spa, restaurants, river, and shops all within walking distance, we did not drive our car. We walked everwhere and had a great time in New Braunfels!I have to say, the weekend at the Prince Solms Inn was the best experience we have ever had at a B&B. We stay at B&B's instead of hotels, and this by far was the best!!We highly recommend to stay!!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Prince Solms Inn. The new owners, who acquired the inn at the beginning of this year, were great to talk to and very personable! The staff was great, the atmosphere was great, and the breakfast was superb! We will definetely come back again and again to visit this treasure. There is so much history to the place that you can not learn it all in just one visit! It was one of the best vacations spots we have ever been to!

We enjoyed every minute of our stay there. Two wonderfully chilly nights in June! There is no skimping on the A/C. The courtyard was the best for eating breakfast and the staff was very sweet.

My wife and I stayed at the Prince Solms 4 years ago. It is like stepping back 100 years in history (except for the air conditioning!). The wallpaper in our room was the orginal hand painted magnolias first put in the hotel when it was built. You have the distinct feeling in this hotel that there are spirits moving around (nothing scary, but if you are sensitive to it, you can feel them). The couple who ran the hotel at that time had retired and bought the hotel. The breakfast served on the veranda in the morning was excellent. The restaurant downstairs is great too.
