PROS

convenient location to Gruene attractions
free breakfast (homemade tacos) and snacks/fruit
friendly staff
great view of river
rustic charm
close and onsite parking
Jacuzzi tub
cool a/c
powerful bathroom fan (to remove shower steam)
clean room
private balcony with 2 chairs and a table
gas fireplace

CONS

pricey during summer weekends, but place was still full
bed was too firm and box spring noisy (if you tend to toss and turn)
room was small, but manageable
first floor rooms can hear people walking on second floor
no mini fridge

Room Tip: Although we did not stay on the 2nd floor, it may be more quite. See my notes.

We really enjoyed this Inn. The view from our balcony was unbeatable. Snacks and drinks are readily available and the breakfast is good. It is the same assortment every morning but there is enough variety to keep you satisfied: breakfast tacos, waffles, bagels/pastries, fruit, cereal etc. I slept great in the bed but the train kept me up the first night. I didn't notice it at all on the second or third nights. The bathroom is spacious with a huge tub. It would have been better with more counter space though. The staff was friendly. It is a short walk to the shops and food in Gruene. Practically across the street is a beautiful winery that we stopped at several times. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Gruene.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms have a better view if your legs can take the extra stairs.

We enjoyed our stay at Gruene River Inn April 13 & 14 for 2 nights. The top floor balcony has a great view overlooking the guadalupe river. Breakfast tacos were very good & better from your balcony in the morning. Convienent to Gruene & Gruene Hall. Would stay here again. Stayed the night before at a nearby hotel for $112 so would choose Gruene River Inn for value, location and the river view with river access.

Room Tip: The top floors have the best view & no overhead wood floors creaking. If more than 1 room get si...

I just read in a recent review that someone paid $145 a night at the Gruene River Inn and we paid $165, so now I really feel ripped off! The rooms are very small and very basic, with the view from the balcony being the only saving grace. There is a large notice posted in the bathroom advising you that the towels are inventoried and if any are missing you will be charged for them. Is it really necessary to say this? It is so off putting.
One very nice thing about the Inn is that there are snacks such as bananas, oranges, cake, and chips available at all times. The breakfast was reasonably good; breakfast tacos, yogurt, and cereal were all available but had to be eaten on styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery. I would expect better at this price.
We spent 2 weeks traveling from Palm Springs to Houston and stayed in many amazing B&B's along the way. This one was the most expensive but it was far from being the best.

We booked Gruene River Inn last minute during Spring Break 2012. We wanted an overnight "getaway" and I was so frustrated at the prices/night that we were being quoted. (Seriously - $300 for a 2* in Port A) Even in Gruene - we were looking at $175+/night. Noticed a friend of mine on Facebook had mentioned Gruene River Inn and started to check it out. We got a room (queen bed) for $135.00 night ($152.55 with taxes) that was 1/4 mile from historic gruene, offered a jetted bathtub for two, and a balcony with a described killer view. We tend to gravitate towards "one of a kind" hotels versus the typical big box chains - so, this place really fit the bill.

Upon arrival (we were there about 30 minutes before checkin) we were warmly greeted and given our room keys (Pedernales Room). We were on our motorcycles and the desk guy actually walked my husband down to show him a great place to park our bikes. He was super friendly - ask where we were from, etc. etc. We unloaded and I was thrilled with our room. Husband wasn't so big on the little out-dated TV - but, it turns out we never even watched TV at all. Room was quaint - had it's own gas stove (we were using A/C so no feedback) and a deck with a small table and two chairs. View had to be one of the best in New Braunfels area. Awesome! Sits high on a hill so you can see for miles and miles - but directly overlooks the Guadalupe River below. Part of the river in view is smooth sailing, but there is also an area of small rapids. (Note: The Guadalupe is a constant 72 degrees - we were there in March and people were in the water floating in tubes in bathing suits. It was about 78 - 80 degrees that day) Room had wood floors and an armoire that served as a closet. There was a chair and a small table inside as well. (see pictures) The bathroom did have a nice big bathtub for two and it worked perfectly. All was VERY clean and neat. The lobby is nice and has a gathering area and lots of complimentary snacks. There are also sodas that are availble on the "honor system". We walked down to Gruene during the day and visited some shops and Gruene Hall for some live music and cheap beer ($1.75). I bought a beer at the Gruene River Inn when we returned ($2.00) Not sure what they charge for wine - but it is also available for purchase. Was nice to sit out on the balcony and drink a couple of beers before heading out to dinner. We walked back to Gristmill for dinner and then to Gruene River Grill for dessert/night cap. Overall A+ positive experience.
Things to consider:
*All wood floors make it a bit loud - noise does carry from room to room. We were downstairs and I would suggest you try and book upstairs if possible. The people above us were quite "lively" during the night (and early morning!) and we could hear (quite distinctly) the bed thudding.
*We love to hike and we walk 3.5 miles everyday for exercise - so the 1/4 mile walk to/from town was not a big deal for us. However, you need to be aware that it is a bit of a walk and there are not sidewalks. (Come on Gruene - use some of your tax dollars to build a sidewalk since there is so much growth in this area) Since you are walking at night in an area where people are leaving a dance hall -- you should be aware of cars and step out of the way as they are coming down the street) Of course, it is an easy drive down - we were on motorcycles, so preferred to walk.

Overall - Great ambiance - Super friendly servcie - Perfect view & location - Reasonable Price. We will be back!

Room Tip: Request a room upstairs

Very nice, charming, rustic bed and breakfast Inn. The best is the river view from the private balconies. Fantastic. You can get right into the river with a ladder. We made a fire in the fire ring. It was right on the water. So fun. There are wonderful homemade cakes, desserts, snacks available anytime you want and a lot of games to play. I liked the upstairs the way there were 3 staircases that each went to only 2 rooms. So there were not a lot of people walking by your room. I loved the gas fireplaces in the room. Great ambiance and wonderful jacuzzi tub. Breakfast was fun with the breakfast tacos. Now that is authentic Texas. Staff was very friendly. What I didn't like was it is very noisy because of the wood planks creaking when people walk and our mattress was not comfortable so we didn't sleep that well.

Room Tip: Upstairs is better

We stayed here for a friends birthday. It was a really nice change and really different as far as hotels go. The layout and older-style wood floors were unique and gave the place a ton of character. It had a small, connected balcony that was just big enough that we could sit outside and hang out. It was close to historic Gruene, but not in the middle of the chaos (depends on what events are going on). The owners/managers were really friendly and the provided breakfast was good each day. We will be back here for sure. It was a lot of fun.
