Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

Really superb ! Great food, great service, reasonable prices and wonderful atmosphere. While waiting for your table you can sit under the trees and listen to live music. A table overlooking the river makes the meal really special. Go ! And have fun ! You will love it.

Plus in all areas:
Atmosphere - the building is gorgeous, old world building, windows overlooking river, indoor & outdoor seating.
Food - GREAT! had fish, chicken and sides. The fries are homemade similar to chips but crisp on outside and soft inside, yummy. Iced tea is brewed tea.
Service - outstanding, they check on you , but are not intrusive, knowledgeable about their dishes and able to answer questions.
Will I return - you bet I will
Do I recommend - absolutely without reservation!

Service was very good as well as the food. We ate outdoors under an umbrella and had a little view of the river. It was still rather warm to eat outdoors but it was worth a little perspiration. Good menu selection including desserts.

We have eaten at Gristmill a few times and it is good everytime. This last visit, I had blackened catfish and my daughter had the ribs. I love the cole slaw, it has a bit of jalepeno for just the right kick. Our service was awesome. It started to rain and the staff worked very quickly to get the plastic sides down and when it quit raining, they were equally quick to get the sides rolled up. Although they were getting busy, we never felt rushed.

As I said, we have eaten at Gristmill before in both large and small groups. I have tried various entrees and all has been good. I will note that we have only been to Gristmill for evening dinner.

Well worth stopping by for a bite to eat!
