Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

My friend and I have been coming here since 2010 on all of our Austin trips. It is well worth the 50 mile drive from Austin. Come down to New Braunfels and float the river then have one of the best meals of your life at the Gristmill. The atmosphere is fantastic, the service is fast, and the portions will definitely fill you up- the price is right too! Chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak, burgers, ribs, and the sweet and salty chips and queso. My favorite restaurant in the whole world.

Good food, good service, love the outdoor seating and view of the river, it's a great "hill country" experience.

We took our incoming Texas State freshman down to Gruene to eat and stroll around. It was a Monday evening and we were starving. Parking is not available at the restaruant (not much anyway) so we parked in a huge public area just a short walk away. Gruene was teaming with people and many walking towards the Gristmill. We were afraid the place would be packed and the wait would be long.
To our delight, we were seated right away (three of us). This place is enormous. Big room after big room. The place had a lot of diners but could very well seat many, many more.
The ambiance is to die for. Neat decor, sitting amongst the trees, Stately fireplaces, massive timbers, etc.
There is something for everyone of the menu, be it artery clogging or plain grilled chicken and steamed veggies. We all went the healthy choices for dinner. My husband had the Chicken Acapulco sans sour cream and with steamed broccoli. Very tasty and tender. I had the grilled chicken without skin or feathers. It looked very small compared to the other dishes but it was plenty. Very tender and seasoned just right. Accompanied by grilled asparagus. YUM!
Our son chose the almost healthy fried chicken sans gravy plus steamed broccoli.
Instead of dessert, we got away from the healthy and had a huge plate of amazing onion rings! For my personal tastes, the onions could have been a little more tender (huge thick slices) but they were delicious none the less.
Our server was a young man who was very attentive but not a nuisance. Our food and drinks were promptly delivered hot.
Their fresh lime margaritas are very good also.
We all left satisfied with our dinner as well as the cost of our meal was reasonable.

The town itself is a historic district, so the restaurant building was of old, the tables and chairs and even the floors. Kinda neat. 10 dining rooms extended outdoors in a very natural setting , we were seated by the wrap around dining area beside the cliff full of trees that drops to the Guadalupe river. Which is nice .Food is great and service is excellent. It is worth the drive. I thought we were driving to nowhere but its a pleasant surprise!

We were there in April and it's wonderful. Never mind the town, which is awesome. If you like shopping, lotsa shops. It's not a big place, but cozy. Also, gotta go to the "dance hall". It was a wonderful experience. You will enjoy!
