Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

A special restaurant in a special place. The entire staff was so friendly and positive. Out on one of the decks for an adult beverage then inside for dinner because it was a little cool. Ashley was attentive to our needs - chicken fried "beef" was very good. Looked in a the historic dance hall with live music on our way out ... Gruene and the Gristmill in an excellent place to visit ... and worth the trip.

“Sadly disappointed”
Reviewed March 27, 2014 via mobile

We have always enjoyed our dining experience here until last Tuesday evening when dined with a group of people. Apparently we had a new waiter that had been assigned too many tables. Our appetizers of onion rings were delicious. However, we had to ask for another plate because there was a hair on one of the plates.

What was most disappointing were our entrees. One of the entrees, a hamburger, didn't even arrive and had to be reordered. All of us who had ordered steaks medium rare were presented them at medium at best.

When we complained about their quality we were given new steaks. Management did come to our table and apologize. They even assigned us a new waiter. However, the previous waiter actually became annoying as he kept coming by every few minutes and apologizing to us. The management team seemed to be extremely young and basically blamed the entire incident on the inexperience of the waiter. My guess is that the food was left too long on a warming tray which caused it to overcook.

To their credit they did comp us for the steaks. However, if this is to remain the number one restaurant in New Braunfels, they certainly need to improve.

“Great Service, Great Food, Great View”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

There is very little to dislike about Gristmill. It is perfectly situated with a beautiful view of the river. It is in Gruene, right next door to Gruene Hall so you've always got that incredible feel that only Gruene can provide. The service is consistently prompt and courteous. The food is always hot, fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced.

The restaurant is huge, so if you'd like a good view . . . Let them know. Otherwise, you could end up on a side of the restaurant that isn't as blessed in the view department.

Otherwise, you'll leave the place happy, full, and with some cash left over!

“Fun place to visit”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

A visit to Gruene is a must! This is the only place I have eaten at but because it is in an old mill it is great atmosphere. Get there early or expect a wait but even that is fun with live music, drinks, big grassy area for kids to run and plan and a chalk board with everybodies name so you can watch to see when you will get a table. Portions are big, saw most everybody leave with to-go boxes. Their onion rings are huge and crisp served with their own sauce that has mustard, mayo, horseradish. Chips are made in house, nice and crispy. Had a special of the day-bbq sandwich that was wonderful. Pasta salad was ok, trout was overcooked. Hamburgers at other tables looked great and green salads did too

“Missed the Mark”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

Perfect location, great atmosphere, but the cook should be fired.

Cuisines are lackluster and fall short of meeting a 4 or five star restaurant.

Presentation and menu selections are average at best. Vegetables seemed frozen and not fresh, I mean how hard can it be to provide fresh choices and great choice cuts at cost.

We paid way too much for our food, for what we got. We were placed out in the rain, with no apologies.

Our server was good, but he could have been great if he had better leadership.

We will not be going back, of which I don't think they will mind. ;-) Some things don't deserve second chances at my cost.
