Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

We live ten minutes from Gruene and we often go to the Gristmill. That should tell you something. It's not really about the food, although it is very good but not outstanding. It's all about Gruene. Located in New Braunfels Tx., it has become one of the most popular places to visit in South Texas. If you like traditional Texas food you will certainly fine several dishes to tempt you. The Mexican food is always good as is the chicken fried steak, and the onion rings are famous. The ambiance however is a solid ten. Located in a very old building on the Guadalupe River, the outside deck in good weather (not to hot or cold) is a place you will linger with friends and have one more sangria or a local brewed beer. The Gristmill is not even our favorite restaurant in Gruene, but if you are heading next door to see Willie Nelson or any of the music at Gruene Hall, it's all part of the Gruene experience. Gruene is a summer destination for hundreds of river tubers
and can be very busy. You should plan for a day to visit the shops and wine bars, and don't miss the Del Rio restaurant which in my opinion serves the best Mexican food in the area.

Located in an old mill, the place is so interesting and inviting. We liked sitting outside on the terraced deck. The food is fantastic. service is fun and quick. If there was a problem it was me, I ordered too much; portions are huge.

On our recent trip to New Braunfels we ate here twice! The onion rings are huge and delicious! We had no idea they'd be so large. The smallest order - 6 - would have been plenty. Service was fast on a Saturday night and we loved the ambiance. Since it was dark when we ate, I can't comment on the view. The weather was unusually warm for February and eating outside was everyone's preference. I had sirloin strip steak - good! My husband had wedding sausage - also good! The next night we had burgers - also good! Highly recommend this place to eat!

The Gristmill is situated in the small town of Gruene which is located on the Guadalupe River . The views from the decks are stunning..Enjoy the Texas Sunshine, if weather permits..but the smells of wood burning from the fireplace lit when the weather is chilly, make the atmosphere even more enjoyable. From steaks and seafood to sandwiches, burgers and salads...I had sushi grade Ahi Tuna Outstanding!!. The variety is delightful and there's something for every palate. Onion Rings as an appetizer...you won't be disappointed. Ambiance is is overflowing .... Arrive early as it seems everyone knows the goodness of this hot spot.. There can
be waits..so be prepared...
