We live ten minutes from Gruene and we often go to the Gristmill. That should tell you something. It's not really about the food, although it is very good but not outstanding. It's all about Gruene. Located in New Braunfels Tx., it has become one of the most popular places to visit in South Texas. If you like traditional Texas food you will certainly fine several dishes to tempt you. The Mexican food is always good as is the chicken fried steak, and the onion rings are famous. The ambiance however is a solid ten. Located in a very old building on the Guadalupe River, the outside deck in good weather (not to hot or cold) is a place you will linger with friends and have one more sangria or a local brewed beer. The Gristmill is not even our favorite restaurant in Gruene, but if you are heading next door to see Willie Nelson or any of the music at Gruene Hall, it's all part of the Gruene experience. Gruene is a summer destination for hundreds of river tubers
and can be very busy. You should plan for a day to visit the shops and wine bars, and don't miss the Del Rio restaurant which in my opinion serves the best Mexican food in the area.
