Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

We go to New Braunfels every year to visit family and go to Wurst Fest. We also always go to the Gristmill. They have a great menu, the food is always good and the service is always excellent. I loved the ribs!

We went to San Antonio for a week in late September. We asked people we knew for restaurant recommendations and the Grist Mill was one. Since we got it second hand we did not know what to expect. We had the impression it was a 5 star upscale restaurant on the river. It was not as expected but what we did get was more than expected.

We ate outside since it was a really beautiful night. When they escorted us to our table we walked up and down steps and through areas where picnic type tables were set up and there seemed to be large groups of people at each table. We finally went up a few steps and our table was the only one on the landing which made it very private.

Not being big eaters my husband and I split the filet mignon. He first had soup and we each had a salad and since we said we were splitting the meal it was presented so that we each had our own meal. We both had top shelf drinks and a glass of wine with our meal and when the bill came we could not believe the price, it was so low. We were staying in San Antonio and this meal, even though was so much cheaper than any meal we had all week was one of the best. The service was great, the ambiance beautiful and meal superb. Anyone going to the San Antonio area should definitely make time to eat here just don't expect a stuffy 5 star atmosphere.

This restaurant is not only beautiful, but it is fun and delicious. It is a great setting for any group from family to romantic to a group of friends just finishing floating the river. The waiting area is outdoors and gorgeous and usually has music. We always go to the gristmill when in Gruene
