Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“Texas comfort food”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Technically located in Gruene TX near New Braunfels, this charming restaurant offers the best comfort food around. And you must start with a BIG appetite and plenty of patience. The place is spacious, but on a weekend - expect a wait - although you can order a frosty cold margarita and sit under the Oaks - so it's not all bad.

Once seated - order the onion rings - do not pass go - do not pause in this decision - just order them! But the portions are large - so bring lots of friends or be extra hungry.

Burgers - chicken fried steak - Beef Tenderloin salad - and the Hill Country cole slaw with jalapeno are my recommendations. I've not had a bad meal here yet and have been visiting for over 20 years!

*Note if you visit in the summer months - there is not air conditioning. It is open air type of place with fans. So if you are dining with someone that is a grump in the heat - go somewhere else and come back in the cooler months.

“Unique place to eat”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Was a warm evening but did enjoy sitting out by the river. I ate chicken salad sandwich and my husband ate a filet. It was all delicious. We did have to battle flies, a lizard on the fence by us and a cat rubbing our legs while we ate. Those last 3 made us a little less satisfied. But a unique experience for sure! Loved the town on Gruene though!

“Gristmill w/ the group”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

We go to the Gristmill every year that we go tubing on the Guadalupe. It's kind of a tradition now.. There is a little outside bar while you wait for your table to be ready.. w benches and normally someone is entertaining on the stage too. It's always full.... The environment is fantastic, food is ok and the staff is very friendly.... it's also right next door to the old saloon, that they filmed the movie Michael dancing. kinda neat.. also little shops to pick up souviners. Always fun to go to the Gristmill.
