Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

When we arrived for lunch we were asked if we had a reservation. There were about 20 empty tables. My friend took a seat under a fan near the entrance. She had the right idea because we were later seated in an area that did not have a fan. Come on folks this is Texas heat and they do make portable A/C units. History vs. heat and the 100 plus year history wins. Apparently the only AC is in the bathrooms!! Sure would hate to be a cook there. Because of the lack of AC the extremely friendly young wait staff will keep you well hydrated. The view was nice. The potato salad was one of the creamiest I've had. I was the only one of 6 who did not get a salad with meat. Later that evening they were all feeling sick to their stomach. I'm not sure what caused it a their meat looked pretty well cooked however the salad may not have been washed well.
The town is a great place to shop.

Like many others, a favorite destination every time our family goes to the Hill Country is the Gristmill in Gruene. It does get hot, because it is an old mill, and they don't have A/C. if you go knowing that, the food is good, the service is great, and the atmosphere is outstanding. The food is very reasonable, and there is a large variety to choose from. We sat in the large room just as you enter, which happened to be under a couple of fans. This certainly helped, but in August, there is not much you can do to help the heat and humidity without A/C. If you go before 8pm on a weekend, you can easily walk outside and hear the music coming from Gruene Dance Hall, and if you are making a night of it, just walk a few steps and head on in. Highly recommend this restaurant.

The Gristmill this restaurant is in is over 100 years old with out A/C. In fact I don't think it would be a good idea as the interesting part of this place is it's style. A deck outside on three levels. We had baby back ribs 1/2 rack, wife had chicken salad. The price is less then we expected and service was good (Jan was our waitress). Do some shopping shops or go to some of the wine stores for tasting. Weekends are very crowded.

Had a friend in from out of town, and my wife and I met her at the Gristmill. Greune is really great little town, and gave us a chance to show this state doing what it does best.

The view from our table was beautiful, our server was attentive, and there were plenty of things to look at and explore within easy walking distance of the restaurant. We were there before the lunch rush, and on a weekday, so I think that didn't hurt.

I had the fried catfish, and it was delicious. Mainly, it was a great place to sit down and catch up with someone we hadn't seen in a while, and we did not feel pressured to hurry our visit. Will most likely visit Greune and Gristmill again soon.

We enjoyed the good food and friendly service. As others have pointed out, the ambiance at the Gristmill is great. We went at noon and had no wait. Sat outside on a deck above the river and visited with family. The pulled pork with homemade potato chips was very good. Everyone in our party of 5 enjoyed their food and there were no complaints at all! We are heading back down in a few days for another event and may go back to the Gristmill for another meal. It is worth a return!
