Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

One of the best environments for a great meal. The wait staff is always friendly, and the servings are Texas size. Tucked away in Gruene, it is a must do.

I've lived in San Antonio most of my entire adult life and I've traveled to a lot of places. The Grist Mill is still one of my favorite restaurants anywhere! The atmosphere is amazing, filled with rustic charm. The grounds are lush and the view of the river is tranquil. Almost everything on the menu is reasonably priced, from $10-$22. I've had the chicken fried steak, the bronze catfish and the shrimp plate, but my favorite dish by far, is the baby back pork ribs! It's not on their regular menu and I'm not sure why. They have been serving it for years. You'll see it on a specials card on the table. The meat just falls right off the bone and the sauce is just right! Their steamed broccoli is delicious and their onion rings are the best that I've ever had anywhere! I'm not sure why it has a New Braunfels address because the restaurant is located right next to Gruene Hall, so while you're there, you should stop into the hall to check out all the pictures of famous people and have a beer. **WARNING**: The restaurant is mostly outdoors and even indoors, there's no air conditioning. There enough of a breeze and plenty of shade. If you're new to the area or just visiting San Antonio, it's worth the short drive!

Recently visited this restaurant with wife and a couple of friends. Easy to find and not a long wait to be seated. We sat outside with a close view of the river. Food was good and huge servings. Onion rings are very filling.

I have visited this restaurant many times and am always pleased with the service and the quality of the food. Located in an "real" mill building, the ambience is rustic Texas, right down to the Texas Longhorn head on the wall.

There is seating outside and there is a good sized indoor dining area. My firm has used The Gristmill for company parties several times and have been very well taken care of. The menu is extensive and varied. Everyone should able to find something to tempt their taste buds at this restaurant. The burgers are very good as are the salads. Texas favorites chicken fried steak and chicken are excellent. Ribs are tasty and I like the Gruene beans always ordering them as a side dish.

Outside in summer can be rather warm, fall through spring is best for outdoor dining. We shall return.
