Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

I know what Texas summers are like, but when everything is open to the outdoors and no enclosed air conditioning, it makes it hard to enjoy a meal. Gruene beans are always good and the Texas Onion rings are worth whatever you have to go through to get some. Neat old place in great old village.

The day we stopped by Gristmill, the tempatures had reached 103F during the daytime. We arrived around 8pm and was seated outside under the trees. It was still about 95F in the shade of the setting sun. The food we ordered was excellent tasting and generous portions, but could only eat a third of our meal, hot food and hot amibent tempatures didn't work too well.
Asking the waitstaff, this resturant does not have any Air Conditioning, only ceiling fans inside the main building. So, hope where you sit there is a nice breeze or wait for cooler weather.

There's not any AC, so be prepared to be hot if you go in the summer. We went the hottest day of the year (so far).. and it was brutal and I was raised in Texas. During the summer, there's lots of people eating here because of the tourists coming up from the Tubing on the Guadalupe river. Good food, attentive staff, interesting history. Fun place actually.

I love everything about the Gristmill after dark in the summer: The old building with bare brick and open sky; the tiered seating levels along the river; the live music; the great atmosphere. . .and the food is pretty good too. I've had several different menu items and have never been disappointed. The chicken fried steak and giant onion rings are always a hit. I was surprised at how yummy the country club sandwich on sourdough was. Just right for a hot Texas night.

The wedding sausage is delicious. You can get it on an appetizer or meal. The cole slaw is delicious but it does have bell pepper. The onion rings are the best I have ever had. They are Hugh and so, so good. It was fun sitting outside.
