Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“A Pleasant Surprise”
Reviewed May 12, 2013 via mobile

I did not have high expectations for this restaurant, tucked away next to Greune Hall. I expected run of the mill (no pun intended) tourist fare. But when I saw an order of onion rings served to a nearby table, I was hooked! Our group had baby back ribs, chicken fried steak, and a pulled pork sandwich. They were all well done, but I think the chicken fried steak was outstanding. And the onion rings, they tasted as good as they looked. Good service, and lovely outdoor seating. This place gave me the feeling that they wanted me to come back.

“A Must!”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

If you are in Gruene TX, you must have a drink or a meal at the Gristmill. Unique setting in the old gristmill and the tables outside overlooking the river are great! Go early for dinner or a late lunch to get a good seat!

“beautiful location and awesome food”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

The Grist Mill is located right on the river in Gruene in the middle of all the little shops. Beautiful scenery! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The food was AMAZING. Best pulled pork sandwich I have had since being in TX. The onion rings are HUGE. There were 3 of us, and we all got different meals. We all loved everything. Highly recommend.

“Wonderful!”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

Had dinner with friends we haven't seen in 20 years. Great outside seating, down on the lower level. Steak salad was fabulous. Apparently our dinner tickets got confused or delayed, and the manager came over, apologized for the delay and comped us 2 desserts (pecan pie!!). We hadn't even noticed the delay since we were so engrossed in conversation. Nice touch! Don't miss this cute little town, Greune Tx.

“Lovely setting”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

Service was excellent. Steaks very thinly cut and overcooked but the fish was cooked to perfection. We heard the ribs were suppose to be really good but they are not on the menu. You just have to ask for them.
