Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“Spectacular atmosphere with great food”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

I met several friends here for a weekday lunch. Unfortunately, they do not allow reservations, but since we arrived early we had no trouble getting seated. I was shocked at how busy this place was during a weekday lunch! The onion rings were peppery, and the chips and salsa crisp and fresh. But don't get full on appetizers!! Portions are large. Two friends ordered the tenderloin sandwich and should have shared LOL! The tenderloin sandwich was fantastic! (I ordered it medium well and it was still tender and juicy) Their sourdough buns are superb. Another good choice is the chicken salad, which seems boring, but my friend says is her never fail choice.

The place has pretty high prices, which is common in a touristy area, but I think the view of the river and beautiful atmosphere was worth it.

“Awesome pre-Gruene Hall concert meal”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

We typically eat here before going to concerts at Gruene Hall. The food is tremendous and reasonably priced. I also like the country/tree-covered setting. One of the things we remember most from here is how good the sangria tasted. Very fruity with lots of suspended citrus pieces and refreshing on a warm spring/summer day. Grist Mill by itself is a good enough reason to visit Gruene .

“Do not miss”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

A visit to new braunfels or Gruene is not complete without eating at this AMAZING restaurant. Ask for a table on one of the many decks layered on the side of the hill with the beautiful river flowing below, AND the food is great to boot!

“A TX Hill Country MUST!”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

If you're wanting a true TX Hill Country experience you can't beat the rustic beauty of this historic original stop. If you have a wait, you'll get to take in the TX weather under old spreading oak trees as you wait to see your name written on the blackboard. The staff is Texas-friendly and efficient (especially our recent waiter Donald)! Whether seated inside or out, it's a visual feast for the eyes. Be sure to save time for a little shopping in the authentic town of Gruene, visit the Dance Hall and make a trip down the hill to the beautiful "float trip available" river. Oh, did I mention the food is delicious! Worth the trip from San Antonio or Austin!

“Excellent place to eat and enjoy”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

We visited this place 2 times. We enjoyed both times. The food was great, the atmosphere was very pleasant. The wait staff were top of the line. The showed that they cared about their guests and treated them great. Prices are fine for the quantity and quality of the food.
