Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

The best part of this restaurant is its variety of eating environments. The indoors houses different size dining areas; outdoors features riverside multi-level decks shaded by huge trees. We chose to eat outside. Although every table was occupied, the tables were situated at respectable distances from each other so we didn't feel that we were cramped. Being nature-lovers, we enjoyed the peacefulness of the tree canopies pierced by glinting sunlight. On to the food... We had spinach/mushroom quesadillas and onion rings. The flavors of the items were like we have had at any number of popular chain restaurants (think TGIF). Perhaps other items taste more special.

Reviewed March 23, 2013

Took our son and his girlfriend here for a late lunch...could not make up our minds what to get as everything looked so good on the menu.....
It was all very good. Good size portions, in fact we had to take doggy bags,
Highly recommend the Trout..it was perfect and nicely seasoned..
Also the Beef sandwiches...they are always perfect.
This was our second time and we will go back...
Waitress was very good...but needed to smile more.

“Gluttons Will Appreciate!”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

Today we visited Grist Mill in Gruene, TX. Gruene is a cute little daytrip city filled with shops, a winery and restaraunts. I have been to Gruene several times in the past but this was the first time I was able to eat at the Grist Mill. They are famous for their chicken fried steak and strawberry shortcake- which were wonderful! We also had the Grist Burger, which was amazing. Maragaritas were also wonderful! The onion rings were also SO GOOD and very large.~The restauraunt itself was very neat and is terraced with many seating options.

“Unique atmosphere, decent food”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

We stopped for lunch at the gristmill restaurant, and really enjoyed ourselves. We had inside seating, and were amazed at how many different seating areas there were, both inside and out, and on multiple levels. It's located in a lovely spot on the river, with nice grounds. The building itself is worth going there for a meal. We just had fairly typical lunch stuff--hamburger, good barbecue pork and barbecue beef sandwiches, and a chicken/taco soup. The food was well-prepared and tasty; good portion sizes (typical too big American portions); and the service was good. I'd like to come back in the evening for dinner to see how the dinner menu offerings are. Tip: If you have a smaller appetite, consider splitting with a companion. Two of us split the soup and a sandwich, and found ourselves plenty full. Another person in our party had a whole sandwich and ended up taking home some in a doggy bag.

“Great view with our meal”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

We have eaten here several times and always make it a point to go back when we visit our daughter and her family. The food is always excellent and plentiful, and the view of the river is just amazing. Be sure to check out the upside down Christmas tree if you go during December!
