Description: Schobel’s Restaurant on the River serves home-cooked Southern food with a German flair. Whether it’s a quick trip through the buffet or a custom order from our menu, we’re certain you’re going to leave full and happy. We specialize in home cooked food! We have an in-house butcher, home-made sausages, farm fresh vegetables, and pride ourselves on friendly service. We are known for our buffet which is definitely not your typical buffet. Nothing is pre-breaded or out of a can – it’s grandmothers cooking on a larger scale. If buffets aren't your thing we also offer a full menu filled with Southern favorites and a few German dishes. Don’t forget to leave room for our delicious desserts! We have an assortment of homemade pies, with buttermilk being our specialty.Come check out our full bar! With some of the coldest beer in town along with a fabulous atmosphere, Schobel’s is a great place to meet friends and unwind after a long day. We have happy hour specials Monday-Thursday from 4-6 pm.

This was our first visit to this restaurant & will probably be our last.

I want to be fair, so please read the whole review before deciding.

1) as I said it was a Tuesday night about 6:45 PM. We were a party of 6. The first thing that threw me off was being told there was no inside seating available for a party our size --but there was seating outside or at the bar. Being as we actually wanted to talk as a family, we chose outside. I do have say that the décor was beautiful & although you couldn't really see the river, the landscaping was very appealing to the eye. The bad part, we noticed as we walked outside that their were many empty booths & tables inside the restaurant...(easily more than 10)....but we were told they were for parties of 4 & that they couldn't be put together at this time.
2) no problem getting our drinks etc.....but I'm pretty sure the mgr on duty was our waiter. Eventually a waitress came & took our order. She was obviously stressed because getting refills was really, really slow.
3) 4 of the 6 of us had the buffet (chicken, riblets, sausage, salad & some sides)....and while everything was ok, I didn't find it particulary great.....it would have been nice to have some type of gravy for the mashed potatoes...and maybe baked potatoes on the bar also. One of the selling points of the buffet was that it was inclusive of many of the homemade desserts. After eating our meals, the dessert bar was pretty empty. We asked at least 3 different servers if they would be restocking that area soon & they said they would "check". Finally when our waitress did come out to refill our drinks, we inquired of her again and that point she went to the kitchen & came back & asked us which pies we wanted because they weren't going to restock the buffet. (it's not even 8 & they have over an hour to go before closing??) Anyway, the waitress went and brought us the desserts we were waiting for.......and I have to say, they were to die for chocolate cream pie & coconut crème pie........
5) the other 2 that ordered of the menu - one had chicken strips & she indicated they were ok.....but she had to ask for dipping sauce? the other had fish & he said it was really good.

Anyway, because of the slow service & lackluster buffet I rated this place just average. It just doesn't live up to its beautiful building & landscaping. If you do go, definitely order fish off the menu & get the dessert.

I can't apologize enough for your less-than-stellar experience with us. When you walk through our doors, you should always expect top-notch service with the tastiest of home-cooked food, and it seems like we missed the mark on your visit.

While we always do our best to be fully-staffed and well-equipped to provide outstanding service, things do come up that are out of our control. That said, your experience was not the norm from us and I'll certainly address our staff about it.

As far as the desserts, I apologize if the buffet was fairly empty, but I'm glad to hear our kitchen promptly whipped up two new ones for your table. I hope this dedication to serving you a delicious meal and our high-quality cuisine will convince you to give us another shot so we can provide you with the experience you've come to expect from us.

All the best,
The Schobel Family

We recently moved to nearby Schertz in January. A friend recommended this place to us. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. There was a large buffet and many items to choose from the menu. We have picky kids and they had a lot to choose from. The price was extremely reasonable. Having been in the middle of a move it was nice to get what I felt like a home cooked meal. Even though we ordered from the buffet, the service was very attentive. We have since been back twice and have not been disappointed. It is definitely a family favorite

We'll look forward to serving you many more delicious meals in the future.

Your kind words about our buffet and staff are much appreciated, Duane! Since our home-cooked dishes are our pride & joy, it's always great to hear from happy customers who have enjoyed all of them! We might be a little biased — but we'd definitely have to agree that our Chicken Fried Steak is "to die for." We hope to see you around soon for a delicious meal on the patio!

We visited Schobel's after spending the day at Schlitterbahn. We had eaten there before and this was our second time. Brittney Nicole was our server and she was great. I know her name because I guessed it just saying Nicole at first and she told us it was her middle name. We then guessed her first name after she gave us the first letter. Brittney was our first choice. Besides the food being great, Brittney made our visit with you even better. However, the hostesses were not too friendly. One in particular. Maybe she was having a bad day. Overall a great experience.

Many thanks for the glowing review, Scott! It's great to hear your day at Schlitterbahn was topped off by a delicious meal with us. Your compliments about our excellent service are music to our ears. We certainly feel very lucky to have Brittney on our staff and will pass along your kind words. Sorry to hear about your underwhelming experience with our hostesses, though — I'll definitely address the staff about your experience to make sure we stop that in its tracks. You and your family stop in again soon — our doors are always open for you.

We are always hesitant trying "Home cooking" restaurants because they are often full grey, mushy and overcooked foods. We were VERY please at Shobels.

Let me say that this isn't health food - this is Grandma food and they did a really good job. We decided on the buffet. The pork chops were perfectly cooked, the veggies were fresh, bright and perfectly cooked. The salad bar was plentiful and the custard pie was directly from Grandma's house.

We got excellent service from the young man who waited on us. Our Daughter is gluten free and he went out of his way to find out what she could and couldn't have. The cook also was helpful in this way and we really appreciated it. The menu had gluten free notations on the menu however they didn't seem accurate (Chicken Noodle soup??) I would suggest double checking if need be.

The decor was homey and comfortable and you couldn't beat the view. The restaurant and buffet were clean and well maintained. The prices were reasonable - especially for the buffet. We would stop by again if in the area.

Many thanks for the wonderful review! Our main goal is to send you home with your fill of delicious, southern-style cooking so it's great to see we accomplished that on your visit! It's always our pleasure to accommodate any special dietary needs — we'd hate for anyone to miss out on our tasty food so we'll always check and double-check on which ingredients fit the bill for you. As for the Chicken Noodle Soup — we'll definitely check in with our kitchen staff about that! I hope you and your family will stop in again soon to much on some custard pie and take in our fantastic view!

All the best,
