“Nice campground, great park interpreter”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

We camped in site 73. It was a good tent site. A reasonably flat tent site. Sandy soil, but stakes gripped pretty well. Had a great presentation about night sounds. The park interpreter was a good showman.

“Not much to it.”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Texas State parks usually disappoint my wife and I. This park was no exception. This park is designed for those who like to car camp and due minimal hiking. It was a decent day trip for a picnic. We were glad we didn't plan to camp, because we were bored with the park after a few hours.

“One of America's best state parks”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

We visit and use this park frequently and have camped in our travel trailer in the park. Great campsites. Beautiful lake stocked with fish. A small canyon (Penitentiary Hollow) that you can hike down into, many trails for hiking and biking, very friendly staff. Great swimming beach and park store.

“Beautiful terrain and interesting area!”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Rated 1 of the top 30 TX hikes by TX Mthly Magazine. Easy off the road to get to. Campsites are sufficient. We enjoyed seeing deer come through our campsite and in the surrounding areas. Alot of history in this small town with the mineral water and hotel built in response. The pictures on the internet were beautiful but there was alot to take in for people with many interests. See the hotel and read up if you like history, climb the rocks or watch some others rapel. The park had a cowboy staged to do some performing but we just didn't have time. No matter what you do, you will have a great time.

“A wonderful place...”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

I grew up going to this lake before it was a state park. It has always been a great place to go and still is. The best place in the state for rock climbing.
