This hotel is fantastic, mostly because of the excellent value for money, great service and the fact that they are constantly cleaning. Literally all day - rubbish doesn't exist at this place! The only negative that we can think of is that there is very limited parking availability, particularly on an evening. This irritated us a lot as we had a hire car and there didn’t seem to be anywhere else to park it nearby without risking the local police towing it away (a very regular sight whilst we were there!) Next time we won’t hire a car; it was too much hassle in the end.
I knew as soon as we arrived that this was going to be a good hotel. We were offered a seat at reception along with a welcome drink of champage whilst the staff checked us in. We received nothing but excellent service during our stay at the Hotel Cleopatra. The best part of our stay was being part of their 'Expo-Club', all you have to do is sign up (for free) online, and then book directly with the hotel. This gave us a variety of 'extras' such as toiletries upgrade (loads of Molton Brown miniatures - lovely!), free spa day (worth 15 Euro each), a 'special breakfast' in your room (yummy - literally everything you could possibly want to eat for breakfast and then some more tasty treats), a nightly 'turn-down' service (basically a mini chocolate on the turned corners of the bed), a welcome bottle of chilled Cava in the room on arrival, and other such freebies later in our stay such as water, wine, chocolates, nibbles... It’s always nice to get little extras whilst on holiday.
The cleaning staff come round twice a day. Once to actually clean the room (and it was always spotless) and then again to do the pillow service, more towel changes if required, and hand out those lovely little extras. The styling of the bedrooms is a little dated, but everything is in excellent working order, the beds are some of comfiest I’ve ever slept on in a hotel, and the bathrooms have clearly been upgraded quite recently as they are another splendour in marble, complete with ‘his and hers’ sink. Also, unlike many hotels the safety deposit box was free. The mini-bar was small, stocked with VERY overpriced drinks and food (as expected – we recommend buying the identical bottles of water at the local supermarket for 30cents and just swapping them for the chilled ones in your mini bar).
The pool is beautiful (although unheated – not that we minded in the summer heat) and adds a touch of glamour when combined with the vast quantities of marble (floors, walls, statues, the entire pool...) in this hotel. We saw this hotel advertised in a British holiday company brochure as ‘adults only’. This isn’t entirely accurate, as there are children within the hotel albeit not many, and there are no child-friendly services. For this you would need to be staying at the neighbouring hotel (also part of the Mare Nostrum Resort) The Mediterranean Palace. Residents at the Hotel Cleopatra can use all of the facilities at The Mediterranean Palace Hotel next door, although are not permitted to use any facilities at the Hotel Sir Anthony. This system also appears to prevent residents at The Mediterranean Palace Hotel from using the facilities at both the Hotel Cleopatra and the Hotel Sir Anthony.
We found the food onsite to be of excellent quality, and the breakfast buffet had a huge variety of food on offer. From toast, fruit and cereal to full english breakfast, freshly cooked eggs made to order and chilled Cava.. We had opted for the breakfast only option (although many residents had opted for dinner and breakfast) and were very impressed with the wide variety and very high quality of restaurants directly opposite the hotel. We tried the italian, chinese, mexican, indian, greek, american and spanish restaurants, all of which were excellent. We only wish we had stayed long enough to sample the other restaurants! There are also some excellent local cocktails bars. Magic Bar (inside the hotel pyramid) and the nearby Monkey Club Bar were great, but the best cocktails were at the italian restaurant directly opposite the hotel.
Our best night on the holiday was the ‘Summer Festival’ held in the main courtyard/pool area of the hotel. We weren’t expecting very much to be honest, but they went all out and put on a fantastic event that culminated in fireworks. The staff performed a short amateur dance show, held in the pyramid theatre. It was well staged and good fun, if a little cheesy. This is then followed by 2 hours of food and drink included in the price. (22 Euro for non-dining residents) There was every kind of food imaginable and it was all really tasty. The drinks were beer, wine, sangria, soft drinks, and Cava. There were loads of different activities on offer, such as snakes and parrots from the local ‘Loro Park’ (Zoo), various inflatable childrens activites (sumo wrestling, bucking bronco, etc) a live band (again very good) and things like hotdog, ice cream ans popcorn vendors (still free) walking around. At 10:30 the music changed to a DJ – who was fantastic and had a large crowd dancing until it all ended at midnight. After 10:30 the drinks went back to being charged at the bars and all residents could join in the disco.
We did a variety of excursions, and we highly recommend the Siam Park – an excellent water park, styled in true Disney fashion (not your usual dodgy holiday water park at all) The only downside to this place was the cost – 32 Euros per adult and then they have the cheek to charge you another 3 or 5 Euro for a locker! Having said that it was a brilliant day out. We were tempted to get the 15 Euro ‘fast pass’ that allows you to skip the queues on the rides (especially since some of the bigger rides had 20-30 minute queues, and most had 10 minute queues) but that was before we discovered that they were only valid for 1 hour… The food at the park was actually suprisingly good, and represented reasonable value for money when compared to prices in and around the hotel.
This was our best holiday ever, and we have paid a lot more money for a lot less at previous destinations. If we return to Tenerife we will be staying here or at their sister hotel, The Hotel Sir Anthony next door, which is apparently even better.
