“Amazing suite with plunge pool”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

I need to start by saying that this review is based on our experience of a suite room with private plunge pool, which I'm sure affected our overall impression of the hotel. Our room - 4002 - was on the lowest floor of the plunge pool levels, but the view was incredible: you could see the beach and the sea beyond between the other Mare Nostrum hotel buildings, and you had a perfect view of the pool area below too. The balcony was much bigger than the pictures had led me to believe and we had four sun loungers with a parasol, plus a plastic table & chairs for eating alfresco. The perks of the plunge pool room seemed to be: no hire charge for the pool towels (4), free wi-fi (not very reliable in the room), lots of space and frequent 'goodies' arriving in the room (half bottles of wine, savoury nibbles, chocolates, etc) – although we'd also joined the Expo Club prior to arriving so some of that may have been due to membership bonuses. We also received an invitation to an evening drinks party at the (currently closed) Atlantis Chill Out area, which is looking a bit tired to be honest. Wouldn't have paid to spend a day there had it been open as our balcony had everything we needed. The plunge pool was big enough for two and, while not heated, was pleasant enough to sit in after a day under the Tenerife sunshine. The only little niggle was that on at least two occasions the maid took it upon herself to drain the pool (presumably to clean it) and we were left with having to fill it again when we returned to the room, which took up to an hour and obviously meant the water then had to heat up again from scratch.
The breakfast buffet has been rightly praised for its variety and abundance and there's a Mercadona supermarket up the hill slightly from the hotel which sells bottled water and all kinds of meats, breads, cheeses etc if you want a cheap lunch. Be warned: the supermarkets closer to the hotel are much more expensive!
We found all of the hotel staff to be friendly and welcoming and, as we didn't want to participate in any of the daily activities, found that we were pretty much left alone which is just what we wanted.
The outdoor bar is a great place to relax under the stars in the evening, although it shuts pretty abruptly at midnight when all the balcony lights suddenly get turned off as well.

The plunge pool rooms are undoubtedly more expensive but I'd say they're worth it - we never had to worry about bagging a good lounger by the pool (or on the beach) and spent most of the holiday chilling out on our balcony, either in the sun, under the parasol or in the shade.
Yes, the hotel is showing its age a little and this is not the place to go if you're fussy about the odd cracked bathroom tile or a scratch on a piece of furniture. But the plunge pool rooms seem to represent excellent value compared with the Sir Anthony Hotel in the same resort (where the rooms are nearly double the price), whose balconies look much smaller and are walled on either side so they don't seem to benefit from the sunshine all day long.

Room Tip: Can't recommend the plunge pool rooms highly enough. 'Mountain view' rooms face a noisy...

We stayed here from 1 - 8 October and had a lovely holiday. When checking in we got a glass of cava which was nice although reception staff could have been friendlier. The rooms were nice and we paid extra for a pool view as we read that it was quieter at night and this was definately the case. The safe is free but if you want to use the fridge it is 2.85 euros per day, on principle we declined. If you book through the hotel you can join the "Expo Club" (before you arrive) which is worth it as you receive a free newspaper every day, bath robes and slippers, Molten Brown toiletries which are renewed every day. a half bottle of cava and chocolates on arrival, our friends also got a half bottle of wine and chocolates the day before we left but we didn't. The beds were very uncomfortable and creaked quite a bit. The pool area must be the best we've had in a hotel as it didn't matter what time we arrived, there were always empty beds. When checking in you pay 15 euros for each person for a pool towel and can change it as many times as you want - you get the money back at the end of your holiday. There is water aerobics every day for an hour and one day there was a live group - I think they were called Back To Campus - they were very good and played a good mixture of music. The hotel has a great situation with a gate opening on to the beach (using your room key to get out and in) and at the front there are loads of very good quality restaurants and bars with a lovely water show every hour. We ate a couple of times at the Mexican Steakhouse which was very nice but be careful with your choice at the Argentinian Steakhouse as the portions can be tiny - 3 slices of meat and 4 roast potatoes i.e. "chips" for 19 euros does not make a husband happy, even although it was fillet steak. We had beautiful cocktails at "Harry's Bar" priced at roughly 8 euros and pints of beer for 3 euros 50. If you don't care about your surroundings and would prefer cheap drink there is a row of pubs behind the restaurants selling beer for about 1 euro 50 per pint with live music but it was just a bit too loud for us, we preferred to pay slightly more and sit in beautiful surroundings with a lovely outlook. I'm not sure what the criteria is to make a hotel 5 star but I would say this was a good 4 star. We would definately return.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a pool view as it's quieter at night.

I was impressed by the hotel immediately::very stylish reception area, friendly greeting and a glass of bubbly - perfect. Our room was lovely, overt the street but with clear sea and mountain views. It was tired, yes but not worn out. Bearing in mind that this is a busy hotel 52 weeks of the year the room looked good.
Breakfast was a bit of a melee but the selection was good. The only real complaint I had during the stay was on the last morning my husband was stopped by one of the staff and had to produce his key card for no apparent reason. It really felt as if we had been picked on - no warning, no-one else seemed to have this. It transpired that spot checks are normal - random and inconsistent but normal; we'd just been lucky to avoid it until the last day. I am certain there must be a better way of doing this!!
The pool area is pleasant but crammed. We escaped to the beach to avoid the crush.
All the staff we had contact with were very pleasant. They didn't fall over themselves but that suits me, as long as I get what I want and am left alone I am happy.
Please bear in mind this is a 5 star holiday hotel, not a business one. I think it offers excellent value.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on as high a floor as possible.

I don't understand the poor reviews re the service here. We found the staff to be very helpful and polite, especially the reception staff. The cava on arrival was a nice touch. Our only complaint was the beds...but uncomfortable beds are common all over europe so we weren't too surprised.
Lovely hotel, great facilities, clean rooms and fantastic location.
We liked it so much, we actually want to go back for new year but sadly the price of the rooms for Hogmanay are ridiculous. Poor show Mare nostrum. On this occasion we will be staying elsewhere.

ended up here when our previous favourite Hotel Noelia Sur was full and really enjoyed it. Positives - Airport transfers , a bit pricier than a taxi @ 30 euors each way but if you can afford it it's a great way to arrrive and leave only 15 mins door to door. The rooms - we booked a Suite with Pool View, great space a bit indulgent for just 2 people, large balcony could do with at least 1 sunbed on the balcony though. No bathrobes or slippers which I expected for the standard promoted and price The pool - giant and very strict on the rules, no diving, no games, no water beds etc but that was a positive for us. The pool towels - 15 euros and you get a lovely big towel for your sunbed with the money refunded at the end of your stay. The terrace bar - capuccino fantastic. Private gate right out to the beach was great. Negatives - there is no mini-bar unless you ask for it and pay to have it even before you use it , the restuarant is a free for all in terms of seating and the food is at best adequate - when we go again it will be RO or B&B. Hairdryer is as per every other hotel hairdryer I've encountered best bring your own. Not much choice for lunch on site during the day best take to the beach front for options. Late check out - a bit of a myth we didn't find anyine who had managed to get this, we did get a courtesy room for 30 mins though at no cost but make sure you book it with reception a few days before departure. The Atlantis Chill out cost 15 euros each we didn't go in because we didn't know what 15 euros got and there was no information readily available. We will definately go back and overall preferred this to our previous favourite in Las Americas

Room Tip: pool view is a must 4th floor or above and you also get sea view
