“The New, Brilliant, Basement Studios Complex”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

We visit Gran Canaria 3 or 4 times a year and have stayed at the Basement on all but 2 visits. We have to say that prior to the new management taking over we were seriously looking for alternative accommodation for future visits. However, after learning new management had taken over the complex in August and radical improvements were underway we decided to book two weeks, taking in the Maspalomas Fetish Weekend. We were so surprised when we arrived at the amount of work done in just 3 months. All of the bungalows have been refurbished, including air conditioning, Apple TV's with a movie channel and Air Play which allows you to stream your own videos from your Ipad or Iphone to the TV. The new staff are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. As soon as you climb out of your very comfortable bed and venture into the usually warm sunshine they are there offering you tea/coffee, juice and breakfast, they are equally happy to prepare your breakfast at any time of the day as you prefer. The new bar is a great area to socialise with staff, other guests and day visitors. The very hard working and dedicated cleaning staff make sure you have everything you need in your bungalow, changing your towels daily and giving you extra towels if you need them. The bungalows are cleaned daily and are spotless. The new owner Phil is always around and makes sure you have everything you need and are enjoying your holiday.
We were hoping for, and expecting some improvements but were overwhelmed at the scale of improvements and most of all the warm friendly ever attentive service from a brilliant team of very dedicated and hardworking team. Thank you guys, it was the best two weeks we have ever enjoyed in Gran Canaria and we can't wait to be back in January, staying at the Basement of course.

My bf and I have just returned home from the Gran Canaria Sleaze Week, formerly known as the Black & Blue Party, and stayed at the Basement Studios. From reading previous comments on Trip Advisor, well lets face it, people either loved it or hated it, and on balance, the reviews were not very good. However, after reading that new management had taken over, and all the rooms had been refurbished, we decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a go. How glad we were !! On arrival late at night we were given a very warm welcome by one of the staff, a welcome drink, and a bottle of wine (not cheap rubbish wine either) After the handing over of the bungalow and safe keys, we were shown to what was to be our base for 10 days. Our 1 bedroom appartment was immaculate, and also included of course the promised sling, which was well used during our stay. Each morning, as soon as we had risen and opened our door, one of the staff came along and asked us if we would like a tea, coffee etc and any breakfast; I opted for the full english each day, which I now regret, as, although being excellent, means I now have to loose the stone I seem to have put on. Other breakfast options were available for the more healthy out there. The pool area was very popular during the day with residents and day visitors alike, with drinks at the bar being very reasonably-priced and put on our room tab until we left. The staff were so kind they even moved a new additional second sofa into our bungalow, and our place was kept spotless by the daily cleaners. There was a little refurbishment going on when we stayed, near the main entrance so this in no way interfered with our enjoyment of the place. Being a beach lover, I thought that I may stay by the pool once or possibly twice during our stay, and spend the rest of our time at the beach. As it turned out, it was the other way around as the other people staying there, plus the regular day visitors we got to know were all so friendly, and the staff on hand to serve drinks or lunch meant we didn't want to leave the place. During our stay, the owners introduced themselves, and explained the changes they had already made, plus the ones still to make. There were also twice-weekly cruise nights where the place was overflowing with hot men late into the night, or should I say into the early hours. At the end of every day, the whole of the pool area was cleared of sun loungers, mopped, then all the loungers put back so everything was spotless for the next day. A new sound system was also installed whilst we were there too, which added to the buzz. All in all, the staff work very hard in the background to ensure everyone has a good time, and we will definitely be paying another visit soon. In summary, wipe the slate with the previous negative comments, the new management have made, and are continuing to make great improvements; this place is awesome and is destined to become the place to stay :) Thanks from myself and my partner to all the staff and other guests and visitors there for a helping make our holiday so enjoyable :))

Room Tip: The balconies of bungalows 1, 3 and 5 are facing the sun all day, so if you like a little shade now...

My partner and I are coming to the end of what is our third visit here in just over a year. Our first visit was just a short stay and barely noticed (we were having so much fun) the rather shabby accommodation. Our second visit was twice the duration and what we had chosen to ignore the first time round soon became a regular topic of conversation amongst other guests and lamenting its undoubted demise if a serious update was not carried out. We returned home and later searched for a similar venue in GC should the Basement fold. There were none that offered the sexual freedom coupled with the excellent location that the Basement offered.
Some months later we learned that the Basement was under new management and about to embark on a refurbishment programme. We booked our third holiday.
What a transformation. All the bungalows have had repairs carried out on them, all painted and all new furniture and beds. An excellent new bar area and office, nearing completion. All new staff.
To summarise. The Basement is not the Ritz and doesn't pretend to be so. What it does offer is good, spacious and clean accommodation with extras as detailed on their website. Incredibly welcoming and friendly staff and the all important unique Basement experience that many have enjoyed in the past and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come.

myself and my partner stayed here a few years ago and we do visit as day guests when we are on holiday. On our latest visit we were not very happy at what we saw. The sunbeds are filthy. The white plastic of the frames is dirty and marked with spilt drinks etc, the blue fabric that the bed part is made of is black with dirt and mould. Come on guys you charge a lot to use your place so make sure its clean. What we did notice is that they are "renovating" the complex a translation into basic language is that they are building a series of new rooms and offices along the back of the complex. If I was a paying guest I would not be happy with paying to stay on a building site. The 3 bungalows 1,3 and 5 now only have 3 or 4 feet between them and the new buildings. I feel that they are trying to cram too much onto a very small site. It is also very pricy to buy any drinks here, I mean 4 euros for a beer is steep when guys are paying 10 euros to come through the door. I think that we may try somewhere else in future. From the sounds of the guys who have stayed here the rooms are still using the same Ikea furniture that was in them 5 or 6 years ago

Room Tip: wait till they have finished the building

My partner and I have stayed at the Basement Studios twice and are about to book our third trip in so many years. Great location and great place for chilling or interacting with other guests or day visitors. The laid back atmosphere is just what you want on holiday. Rooms are pretty basic, but everything else about the Basement more than compensates for this. More expensive than other accomodation, but in our minds it is great value for money. Hence our next visit!

Highly reccommended, but ensure you know about the accomodation before you take the plunge and book ; )

I've just spend 10 days in Playa del Ingles. I visited Basement Studios as a daily guest for 9 days out of 10. The new owner was very busy refurbisching and modernizing the cottages. Though I haven't stayed in the cottages, I was able to visit one - it was nice and spacious.
The place is spotlessly clean and very friendly. Quite easy to find (just opposit of the Jumbo centre). Drinks and food of good quality and moderate prices. Very nice atmosfere. It's everything a gay visitor could hope for: quiet but cruisy at the same time! Next time I'm in Playa del Ingles i will try to stay in the cottage there.

The Basement Complex, run by Darren and his team, never fails to exceed all expectation.
Staff are friendly and attentive, without being obtrusive, and the Basement itself is immaculate in every respect... We have had our second outstanding time in Gran Canaria, and it was all down to the Basement and the brilliant team!
Can't wait to return in January for a week, and see the new upgrades to an already tremendous complex... It's very exciting!
