Reviewed July 21, 2018

My partner and I (Aged 49 & 51) travelled for 11 nights / 12 days between the 14th - 26th of June 2018 staying on a half-board basis; This is an honest and unbiased review of our findings and opinions of the IFA Buenaventura and resort of Playa Del Ingles.

Over the past 30 years we have been fortunate enough to travel to many places throughout the world and following this valued experience we would class this establishment as nothing more than 'average'; That is not intended to be a criticism in any way; it’s just a typical Spanish resort hotel with nice rooms and amenities, just like 1000's of other hotels throughout Spain, Portugal, Canaries, Balearics etc., etc.
There is nothing extraordinary to make this stand out against any of the others, hence why we give it just an ‘average’ rating.

To make the review easier to read we have bullet pointed some ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ below along with what we believe to be some valuable travel hints and tips that we have generally learnt the hard way over the years:

POSITIVES:

• Very clean and airy hotel.
• Rooms are very large, clean and spacious
• Lovely pool areas; there are 2 of these in separate areas.. one classed as the 'quiet pool' and the other where the majority of the entertainment happens (not so quiet!!).
• Friendly, English speaking reception staff.
• Breakfast served until 11.00 am and tea until 9.30pm.
• Lots of daily and evening entertainment delivered by the on-site animation team.
• Well stocked Supermarket just 200m away (out of the hotel, turn right and it’s on the next corner).
• Shuttle bus to the beach every hour (about a 10 min. walk / 15 min. stroll).
• If late arrival you get a small picnic bag each consisting of a sandwich, small bottle of water, an Apple and an Orange.
• If you like Irish bars there are about half a dozen or so within 300 metres of the hotel (out of the hotel and turn left).
• There is piped music into your room if you want it on between 10.00 – 22.00hrs
• Taxis available right outside the hotel (around £4 to go to the Yumbo centre which is about a 30 - 40 minute walk {depending on how quickly or slowly you walk})
• Loads of Wardrobe space with plenty of clothes hangars
• Good Hairdryer in the Bathroom so no need to pack one ladies (or Gents!?) 
• The hotel has its own small British pub just next to the main restaurant run by Sarah from London (If this is your thing!?)

NEGATIVES:

• WORST hotel I have EVER stayed in for sun-bed reservation! ABSOLUTE JOKE – No beds available after 08.30… All reserved by some morons who don’t turn up until after dinner… this happened every day (Pictures and videos to prove to anyone who says this isn’t true!!). We watched a lady one day who had learning needs have to place her towel directly onto the tiled floor as the 20 or so beds that were available had all been reserved!!
• Very busy hotel (made worse by the fact that it’s sister hotel just down the road was closed for renovation).
• No air conditioning in the room – We didn’t suffer too badly but I would imagine in July / August it may get quite unbearable? (These are available for hire at around £100 per week)
• No fridge or kettle in room (Again, these can be hired from reception if required – Fridge £70 per week)

NOTE: A ‘comfort package’ is available from reception; this is a reduced rate for combined air-con, wi-fi and fridge hire (you save around £30 as opposed to hiring separately)

• VERY Busy restaurant at meal times… Impatient people everywhere just pushing and shoving... like a cattle market
• The food is edible and you certainly won’t go hungry but as others have said it’s not the best quality we’ve ever had and does get quite repetitive after a week. We got that fed up with it that we ate out for most of the last 4 days
• Never any hash-browns (or similar) at breakfast… Devastating!! 
• The main bar-man in the Restaurant bar is so miserable it’s unbelievable… Small guy with glasses… never smiles or jokes and doesn’t want to speak to you!!
• The only ‘free’ water available at meal times has to be got from the miserable bar-man and it’s just tepid water out of a tank (God knows why this can’t be self-service??)
• If you’re not A/I and you buy bottled water at meal times it will cost you £1.80 a bottle!! (Scandalous I.M.O)
• Wi-Fi is 2 euros per day if you want it in your room (It’s free in the main Reception / lobby area but you can also get it downstairs in the British Bar)
• Hardest Mattress I have ever slept on… didn’t sleep properly the whole of our stay (I appreciate this is down to individual preference but I personally found them terrible)
• There is no longer an on-site Discotheque as advertised in some brochures; apparently this closed down around 2 years ago!

TRAVELLERS HINTS & TIPS:

• Take photo copies of your passports with you (or photograph them on your device)… should they go missing it will help immensely in getting replacements
• Split your money evenly into daily piles with paper-clips. Helps you keep track of your spending and any money not spent in a day can be rolled over to the next day.
• Take a travel kettle and fill it with your favourite brew... this way you won’t have any nasty surprises when you unpack with the possibility of having tea or coffee everywhere in your case.
• Take a small lockable money box to keep your money in within your safe; This doesn’t prevent anyone from pinching all your money but it does prevent ‘skimming’ (Where someone gains access and just takes a small portion of your money hoping you won’t notice)… This happened to us in Cape Verde in 2015 where around £40 went missing but we couldn’t prove it, but we did learn from it!!
• Take a 1 metre, 4-way UK extension lead… solves any limited socket issues in your room.
• Ensure you keep your EHIC card with you at all times… It won’t count for anything if it’s in your safe or left in your room… you need to have it on you when you need it!
• Catch the Bus to Puerto Rico if you haven’t been before (Bus No. 39)… well worth a day out (Takes around 50 minutes on the bus and costs just short of £3.00 each / A taxi is between £20 – 26 each way and takes around 15 – 20 minutes)
• If you go out of the hotel and turn right, walk to the supermarket at the little round-about and turn left… the bus stop is 100 yards down here (Carry on to go to the Beach and all the bars and restaurants on the front – 15 minute walk)
• A parasol and 2 sun-loungers on the beach will cost you between £7.00 – 9.00 per day

If you have any questions or would like specific photos of any of my reviews, please don’t hesitate to contact me and we will do our best to accommodate.

Dear jonnyhotpantz,

Thank you very much for choosing our hotel IFA Buenaventura to spend your holiday and to share your opinión on Tripadvisor.

We appreciate your positive review about the kindness and the efforts of our staff who work hard to satisfy the needs of our guests and also all areas are clean as well.
Concerning the sunbeds, we are sorry about the inconveniences caused about, we are aware that we have 1600 guests at the hotel, for this reason it is complicated to stay in front of the pool. Despite of that, we always inform our guests from their arrival it is not allowed to reserve sunbeds, we also have the information on televisions and also in brochures as well. Besides we have two pool areas such as Honolulu and Banana and we have created new areas such as Thai Massage and also garden area too. However, there are some guests who do not respect the rules.
Regarding to air conditioning or fridges, our hotel hires this service our guests to have interest to use it, according to availability.

We would like to you visit us soon.

Kind regards

This hotel is in the most perfect location for playa del ingles night life being right next to kasbah and a ten min walk to yumbo. I wasn’t very impressed with the food but it wasn’t terrible. There was no room to sit around the pool despite going mid October as all the sun loungers were taken by breakfast. There is a nice relaxation area though. Rooms are pretty standard and a little old but nothing terrible! Only complaint is no aircon and there place is so loud at night we didn’t hardly sleep!

Dear Lissy,

Thank you so much for sharing with us your opinion about your stay at our IFA Buenaventura Hotel.

We are pleased to read in general we resulted to be in accordance with your expectations, but would like to apologize for those certain aspects that could have made your holiday better. The respective comments will be passed to the departments in charge in order to take a look into what we could improve on.

Regarding your comment about the noise, we are not sure if you mean that unfortunately caused by other guests. We are very serious regarding the sleep of our guests, so of course if there is any kind of inconvenience, we try our best to sort it out. The best way is to stay in touch with the reception desk, at the disposal of our guests 24 hours. If on the other hand there is any other kind of discomfort, we could suggest a room change. We have 724 rooms and over 1400 guests, so not always we are aware of their preferences and sometimes the room they have been allocated in it is not what they had expected. Therefore, we always offer the possibility of a room change.

We sincerely hope that you had a great stay with us despite all commented aspects and that you choose our Hotel IFA buenaventura once more for your next stay in Playa del Inglés.

Kind regards,
Guest Relations

Went to this hotel as a group of 16, all were very dissatisfied with the food, no choice for vegetarians, food flavourless and bland. All the group choose to eat out rather than eat there. Meat dripping over vegetarian food, Vegetarian Paella (but adding in meat). When we complained to the hotel about the food no one was bothered. No Air con which is a big no. No where to sit in the evenings as all tables taken, only places to sit was in the non all inclusive bars where you had to pay for drinks, bearing in mind we were all inclusive there was no where to sit.
The only part of the hotel we actually enjoyed was the animation team, such lovely people and made such an effort for all my group. Would not recommend

Dear guest smead502627,

Thank you very much for choosing our hotel IFA Buenaventura to spend your holiday.

We are very sorry that in general we could not match up with your expectations and would like to apologize for any inconvenience you had during your stay. Concerning your comments about the food, we would like to say that it is important to take into account not all our guests's preferences are the same, therefore we try to offer a global standard kind of food in general as well as some special dishes in order to satisfy as many people as we can. In other words, we try to vary as much as possible, but we know it can be hard to please every single person. However, we will always try it! We apologize very much if we did not satisfy you on that respect.

We hope you give us a second chance to improve our service.

Kind regards,

We stayed as family of 4 travelling with jet2 in June. The first night we stayed in a great sea view room but it was too far from the reception area so we changed rooms in the morning. Staff are are so friendly in this hotel, all are helpful.

The hotel itself is a bit dated and would benefit from modernisation (reception staff said this is happening soon). We stayed half board and food was reasonable, lots of choice although similar things repeated. The first few days weather was grey but when the sun was out it was lovely and hot. Pool water was cold through the week which was a shame. People also have a bad habit of booking their sun lounges with towel - really annoying especially if you want to sit together in children’s pool area. Even more annoying when towels are left all day and no one has used the loungers!!This issue needs to be addressed by hotel.

On our last day we had a late flight and so checked out at lunch time but we were able to book a room for a half hour slot in the evening to have a shower so was able to have a beach day and use hotel facilities in the day - great idea.

The hotel itself is in a good location, would recommend.

Also, make a visit to the sand dunes at maspalomas beach and Puerto de Morgan - both a great day out.

Ok, so firstly I’ll say in the lead up to this holiday I began to read reviews and feel dread. I am quite fussy and worried about what I’d booked! This was totally unfounded. So, please ignore all the negativity! We are due to leave today so I’m typing this from the balcony!

We arrived around 9.30pm, had a smooth check-in experience, were given a snack as the restaurant had closed, and our room keys etc. Melody at reception was very friendly and welcoming!

We arrived at our room - 769, and it was perfect! Spotlessly clean and large, and best of all it had a bath! We found the beds to be very comfortable. We could hear entertainment by the poolside, but were too tired to venture down.

In the morning we were delighted to see we had a pool and sea view! I’ll break the rest of the review down:

Staff - super friendly, everyone we met is polite including cleaners, bar staff, reception, restaurant staff and the animation/entertainment team.

Food - restaurant always busy, but runs efficiently. Good choice for all meals, but can be repetitive, same as at every AI hotel. We tend to eat out at night because we like to explore but used the hotel for breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks. Drinks were great, there was a selection of cocktails available, soft drinks and local wine/beer.

Air conditioning - doesn’t come as standard, so we hired a air conditioning unit and found it an essential. Well worth paying €70 for.

Sunbeds - there does appear to be a shortage of these, but we had no problem getting two daily. They are released from 8am.

Entertainment - goes on all day and right to night, great fun! Animation team are super friendly and love to engage.

All in all, a great hotel and we have had a blast! Would definitely recommend. Keep up the good work IFA.

Now off to spend the last day by the pool before we fly home x

We are happy to hear that you have had a great experience with us. Starting with our team who tries to work hard to improve our service. We are aware of many guests want to eat at the same time, for that reason, we ask at reception what time want to have dinner.
