“Santa Clara”

I stayed in the Santa Clara Bungalows with a friend of mine. The staff are lovely and the bungalows are great. They are basic but nice. The 2 pools are great and there are lots of loungers. My only criticism is that there were no parasols around the pools to get out of the midday heat.
The location is great, right by the Gran Chaparral. We ended up in the same bar every night - the heineken cafe. Its a Dutch bar which had live entertainment every night starting at 10pm. The staff were amazing. Would recommend to anyone.

After reading many reviews I can certainly say that we were of differing opinions, not quite knowing what to expect when we arrived at the Santa Clara Bungalows. We shouldn't have worried.

We travelled through Thomas Cook and although the outgoing flights were delayed it was a pretty uneventful trip. Arrived nearly 4 hours late but were transferred quickly from the airport to the bungalows.

We were the only travellers checking in which was quite nice no fighting for reception and with three kids and two grandparents in tow it was a blessing.

We were efficiently and friendly given our key two our bungalows (a two bedroom for me the wife and the kids and a one bedroom for my parents 297 and 292 respectively).

You need the map but once your used to the complex it's very easy to find your way around.

Bungalows were basic but clean and quite attractive, although the crockery and cutlery left a lot to be desired!! Towels and bedding clean and the bungalows themselves bright an airy. Ours had a decent sized garden and patio and apart from the neighbours no one passed so pretty private.

The complex seemed to be made up of Spanish owned holiday homes and tourist lets so it wasn't too busy and it had a noce local feel.

There are two pools at the Santa Clara and we tried them both. The nicer looking one is an infinity pool and at it's deepest is 1.4 metres not our favourite as it was the busiest and usually full of kids splashing around, and for some reason some people from seemed to think it was theirs and were quite rude when we went to use it, dirty looks etc. The second pool was more of a standard pool and to be fair was our favourite as it had a decent "deep end". It was never busy and on more than a few occasions we had the pool to ourselves. A note if you're taking kids there is no lifeguard on either pool.

Grounds were well cared for and there seemed to be some patio laying going on. All of the staff at Santa Clara were friendly and would do almost anything to help. Ryan the Thomas Cook rep is great and a lovely person, always asking how you were and bless he had a hell of a time with some guests on our second week.

As far as the resort of Playa Del Ingles goes - it's dated, spread out and not really that attractive, my advice get out of the resort during the day, get the bus to Las Palmas, wonderful place 50 mins and 5 Euros on the bus, if you hire a car go to the bontanical gardens (free entry) and beautiful. Corcodile Oark is good for the kids and not too far from the resort if you drive. If you like to shop then the locals to the the Atlantico Centre, it's worth a visit, and they have a huge Carrefour which is cheaper than the local supermarkets.

The local markets a good for a look around but are very touristy and can be expensive, shop around. Puerto Mogan is a lovely place and the market is good. There is a market in Playa Del Ingles on a Wednesday and Saturday, we drove but you can catch the bus around the corner from Santa Clara or jump in a taxi can't imagine it would cost much.

Usual selection of restaurants in the vicinity our favourit was Guarapo - leave the Santa Clara, turn left and then left at the end of the street go to the top of the street and you'll see it straight ahead. Good selection if not the cheapest and excellent service. Try the Flambe Bananas.... mmmm.

Shopping centre's much of a muchness, dated and selling tacky rubbish, if you look you can get a few bargains.

Watch out for the PR's constantly trying to get you in their establishments, although they don't bother you if you're eating an ice cream!!

All in all a very enjoyable trip, loved the bungalows and as long as you're not expecting 5 staf luxury you'll be fine.

just got back off a weeks stay at santa clara, amazing place thomas cook should deffinatly reconsiders its rating!!
we had a 1 bedroom bungalow wasnt big but enough room for what we needed, we stayed in number 230 which had front and back gardens which was excellent because my 1yr old daughter struggled with the heat so we sat in the garden while she came in and out as she pleased. only problem is that the shower didnt give a lot of hot water so all 3 of us had to be in and out in 10mins max!! maids were in nearly everyday (didnt speak any english tho) even washed the pots which was very surprising. pools were lovely and clean couldnt fault them at all, staff were very helpfull and very friendly with my daughter. santa clara is near plenty of shops and a few minutes walk from kasbah, jumbo, metro and plaza shopping centres.
playa del ingles is a lovely resort the only problem we had is that everywere is steps and not enough slops for pushchairs or the disabled!! the beach is amazing although we found it a little to hot for my daughter to spend the day there, plenty of cheap restaurants and bars around but a little more pricey near the beach!
we loved it so much that we are thinking about going there permenantly!!

My girlfriend and I stayed here from the 5th to the 12th April 2008. We were looking for self catering and somewhere with two rooms as we have two teenage boys.
First impressions were good, staff friendly and efficient and the bungalow was clean. It was cleaned and towels etc changed regularly.
The resort was quiet as was the complex, which was a plus for us. Local amenities are close by as is the Yumbo Centre. We were advised to 'have an open mind' if we wanted to go there of an evening as there is a large 'gay/transvestite' community who take the place over after dark. We just went to some of the numerous other places to eat in the evening & saw little evidence of it.
The Greek restaurant at the entrance to the bungalows is well worth a visit, excellent food, but overall I was disappointed with both the price and the quality of local restaurants. The poor exchange rate may have something to do with the cost but next time I will stick to Greek Village, Tapas Tango and the Italian place next to the Tapas bar, they were good. Hard Rock Cafe was OK but expensive.
Playa del Ingles is not a traditional Spanish town as it was built as a tourist resort. It is therefore very international and not the place to go if you are looking for a cultural experience. Locals were often somewhat taken aback when I spoke to them in Spanish!
Holidays are what you make them & we had a wonderful relaxing time. I would recommend Bungalows Santa Clara without reservation, particularly for a family holiday. It would be ideal for those with younger kids as the whole complex felt very safe and secure.
We were also advised by the tour rep on how to deal with Time Share touts and cockroaches, I can honestly say I never saw either!
We plan on a return visit.

We have just had a fantastic family holiday at the Santa Clara Bungalows over the easter week, we hired 2 bungalows, a 2 bedroomed and a studio type. Both were very clean and comfortable, cleaned 4 times in the week, towels and sheets changed twice. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. As this was our second visit to the resort and Bungalows in 8 years we knew the area very well and were not disappointed the second time arround. I can recommend this resort for family fun and safety. Our ages ranged from 51 down to 15 and all equally enjoyed our stay.

Reviewed April 11, 2008

Just got back from a weeks holiday at the Santa Clara bungalows in Playa Del Ingles.

We had read mixed reviews about the accomodation but for a bargain price thought what the heck?!

When arriving, the reception staff were efficient. They gave us our key and a map of where to go to get to our bungalow. The complex seemed tidy. We only seen two cockroaches in the whole of Gran Canaria during our holiday.. none of which were near our bungalow.

When we first arrived there were a few ants on the back patio. But using a spray in the kitchen cuboard (which killed them immediately) and a dust pan and brush which was also provided, they were gone in no time!

Our bungalow was on the corner of the plot (number 183). It had been newly refurbished with clean modern wall tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, and new doors. The only thing that hadnt been changed was the floor tiles and, at first glance, they seem dirty.. but infact just have black chips on them (which sounds worse than it looks - they arent that bad). The beds in the bedroom were quite soft and the sofa bed was quite hard. On our first night we had to suffer with thin blankets and pillows that had hardly any stuffing in them. We asked if we could have more pillows and blankets, and the cleaner brought them round for us the next day.

The shower was reasonable. If you wanted hot water you needed to turn it to the cold side so abit of a shock if you didnt know this! Clean towels were supplied every other day.

The outside, patio area was lovely. Ours had the sun on it from approx 10am until 6.30pm which was great. However the road was right outside so it could get noisy and it was slightly embarrising when a coach passed full of people when you were sunbathing!

Kitchen area was also very clean with enough utensils for 3/4 people.

There were 2 pools, 1 of which nicer than the other. Although both were freezing! Nice to sunbathe near though, allthough the sunbeds were a pain as you couldnt recline them and they were chained together.

Behind the Santa Clara there were a few British/Irish bars. WEMBLYS was our fave, we recommend you go there! The DJ (Ray) was really funny and even if there were only a couple of tables in there, he would get everyone together and get everyone joining in. There was a general knowledge quiz at 10, followed by a music quiz where he would play music from the 60s to the 90s and you had to state the artist. If you didnt know the answer you could put your hand up for a clue and he would try his hardest to help you. Really recommend this place!!

The beach was about 10 mins walk away (a bit of a treck really) but taxis are very cheap (aprox 2 euros anywhere you want to go) and they are very easy to flag down. They often wait outside big centers like the Yumbo, Kasbar, Beach etc making it easy to get home. Beach seemed clean and tidy, sand volcanic though.

We only went to the Yumbo a couple of times. The shopping there seemed better than the nightlife and we didnt like the fact there was so much concrete everywhere. Alot of gays but not many drag queens.

We loved the Kasbar center.. we had a couple of nights out there. Rogers is good, quite expensive but plays great music and there always seems to be a good atmosphere in there.

We went up to Puerto Rico in a taxi 1 night (which we asked a member of staff at our friends reception to book as there was 6 of us and you only really see taxis for 4 people around) It came to about 25euros. The PR's in Puerto Rico are alot more demanding than the ones in Playa Del Ingles, everything isnt as spread out, giving you more choice. The M&Ms bar is sooo cheap! Less than 1euro for a pint! Harveys had fab atmosphere and had men dancing on the bar.

No supermarket facilities on site, but not too far from a good priced one which was also near the Wemblys bar.

We didnt really see our Thomas Cook rep, but then again we didnt really need her as we had no problems and thought the excurtions were too expensive.

Overall, I would definately recommend Santa Clara. It is well worth the money, clean, newly refurbished, good location to most nightlife/shopping centers and, i think, worth more than the 1/2 star it had in the Thomas Cook brochures.
