“Back again - and we will be cack again”
Reviewed April 5, 2012

We have been making our holiday at Barabacan many times before, this Easter is no exception. We are travelling with 2 kids 7 og years and do always book the bungalows. These are well equipped 2 bed apartments with 2 very good bathrooms. The cleaning is very good and the level of maintenance are very good. The garden is kept very well.
The staff at the hotels is welcoming and we would like to especially favour the reception staff who is always very attentative and wlcomming.
This year the weather in Easter has not been in favour of sunbathing.
We would recommend this hotel very much and we will be back !

Room Tip: If you travel with family we would recommend the bungalows

Well what can I say...lets start with Gran Canaria itself. I have successfully avoided it for many years but I finally succumbed....Went with a group of gay friends and had an absolute ball. The Yumbo...what can I say.....So if you are a gay man, or middle aged scandanavian naturists you will love Gran Canaria. Well enough about the island.

The hotel was great, the staff could not do enough, they helped out with every request. It was well placed, clean, well maintained. Other than breakfast we did not eat here, but if the breakfast is the standard then I imagine the rest to be good also. If I were to visit again I would stay here again but would like to try one of the bungalows. Well done to all.

Room Tip: all the rooms seem fine, I would book a bungalow next time.

Would recommend this hotel. The hotel is spotless in every area and the apartments are spacious with everything you need. The location is good being central for everything and even though the hotel is located on a busy roundabout there is no traffic noise within the hotel itself.Lovely pool area with plenty of sunloungers and cushions and non chargable towels supplied in your room for the sunbeds. Most apartment have sunny locations for most parts of the day.We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would certainly make a return visit in the future

My usual report format is to try to include as much detail as possible, but know that some people just want a recommendation so I put this first. Sol Barbacan is a well maintained and well run (mostly) 4* hotel apartment complex. The accommodation is excellent, the location pretty good, the facilities plentiful and (especially if you have kids) the events team is friendly. The only things that might be of concern is the chaotic breakfast service and, in high season the pool areas might be very (or even over) crowded. Something which shouldn’t be an issue, but has been mentioned on previous reports is the mix of nationalities. Yes there are a significant number of Dutch guests, but so what, it’s their holiday as well and they are very friendly hotel staff are friendly, helpful, and multilingual so nobody is left out.

Sol Barbacan is a really comfortable place to stay, and if we go back to Gran Canaria then we would happily stay here again.

ACCOMODATION – Sol Barbacan has two key parts: a “V” shaped main block containing reception, the bars, restaurant and 93 apartments – a mixture of one and two-bed - each with a balcony; and a second part made up of 57 one and two-bed bungalows with terrace. The main block accommodation is in excellent condition – it looks like they have been recently refurbished – and all the furniture in the apartments is modern, well looked after complimentary to the décor. The bungalows look just as well maintained though we didn’t see the insides. Overall these match up to the 4* rating claimed the hotel. Their websites are fairly accurate www.barbacan.es
and http://www.solmelia.com/hotels/spain/gran-canaria/sol-barbacan/home.htm?codigoEmpresa=601030ULP&gclid=CNmzhaCFzq0CFUVTfAodzlR5mw

Our party had two, one-bed apartments in the main block with views of the main pool from the balcony.
The apartments are very large if there are just two of you and even if you have another 2 in the sofa beds there is plenty of space. The wardrobe space might be a bit limited, but hardly the end of the world.

The layout of the main block apartments is excellent and split into 4 areas: Bedroom; bathroom; living area and balcony.
- The bedroom is a little small but nicely thought out and as the rest of the apartment is so large you will only be in the bedroom when you want to be :)
- The bathroom is appointed with quality fitments and all the usual things you would expect from a quality hotel.
- The living area is sub divided into 4 areas: Kitchen; sofas (which turn into sofa beds if required); TV area and dining area. The kitchen is much better than most with a full selection of appliances including a combined microwave/grill, hob, kettle, toaster, coffee maker, and fridge. The sofas are comfortable and quality flexible lighting allows anything from romantic to bright reading. The dining area has a proper table with 4 dining chairs so you can eat real meals if that is what you want to do.
- The Balcony is large and has a table and chairs for four people, plus 2 full sun loungers and still doesn’t feel cramped. Half of the balconies get sun in the morning and the other half in the evening, with a lucky few at the apex of the “V” (as we were) getting all day sun. All the balconies have a view of the pool.

Maid Service was 7 days a week whilst we were there including New Year’s Day. The apartment was kept pretty clean and this is probably a bit picky, but for a 4* hotel it wasn’t quite as good as expected. The sheets were replaced once in the week and the towels when you left them on the floor.

The price of the apartments outside of Xmas / New Year are good value for money, and in the really peak period they are still good when compared with the price increases seen across the resorts. A really nice touch on New Year’s Eve was that all the rooms had a bottle of sparkling wine left in them on the house, and free bucks fizz was available on New Year’s day at breakfast.

The apartments’ location is fairly central to the resort – a short walk to Kasbah and Yumbo centres – but a bit further from the beach/sand dunes. This is the right way round as only a short stroll to the restaurants at night when dressed to thrill and you can tackle the hill in beach wear and flip flops if you want to go to the beach. Even though they are on a fairly busy roundabout, there is very little road noise anywhere in the complex.

BARS – There are three bars: pool; cocktail and restaurant/lounge.
Pool Bar : Open through the day and much of the evening. It is fairly simple, but well stocked and service was good. Food from the restaurant menu could be ordered from the bar, but there were fairly limited for smaller lite snacks or sandwiches. Prices were mostly comparable to the rest of the resort.
Cocktail Bar : An inside bar open from 18:00 until 02:00 (or earlier if not very well used). The bar is quite large and has a stage/entertainment area for the shows and a dance floor for the ‘discos’. All the bar staff were really good but especially one who was the life and soul of the bar. The bar was clean, comfortably decorated, seating was comfortable and well laid out. Overall it a nice place for a drink and socialize. At New Year it was full of energy and fun.
Restaurant/Lounge Bar: This is situated outside to the front of the hotel and restaurant. It looked like a nice place to sit and while away a warm evening, but we didn’t go there and as it was winter was a bit too cool to sit in the late evening.

We used the pool bar during the day, but didn’t use the cocktail bars as much as we might have as there are plenty of other bars and cafes around the resort but it is worth a look.

POOLS – There are 2 heated pools, a children’s pool and 2 hot tubs.
The main pool is situated in the mouth of the “V” of the main building and is attractively shaped with a small island and palm tree in the centre. The pool was heated whilst we were there and that made a real difference if you wanted to swim. Getting out was a bit chilly, but dry off quickly and even in the Dec/Jan sun you soon warm up. There was a lifeguard on duty all the time we were there making the pool pretty safe for adults and kids.

Around two sides of the main pool there are well laid out sunlounger areas, though in the high season these are likely to very crowded. The loungers are in good repair and have sponge cushions, making them comfortable as well. The pool is in sun for most of the day so plenty of opportunity for soaking up those rays with a drink from the bar.

The second pool was smaller and much more simple situated in the centre of the bungalows. Attached was one of the hot tubs. We didn’t actually use this pool so again other than it looked OK I can’t make any real comment.

BREAKFAST – The apartments can be booked as self-catering, B&B or full board. Our intention was to go self-catering as the apartments have proper dining facilities, but we ended up with B&B. This was both a positive (good and wide selection of food) and a negative (disorganized chaos).
Breakfast is a buffet and taken in the restaurant with both inside seating and outside by the pool. The real sticking point with breakfast is getting a table and getting tea/coffee which is the only part which is table served. There is absolutely no organization - nobody managing the seating or taking the drinks orders. You can tell those that have just arrived as they stand waiting patiently for tables to be cleared and be directed to a table. Those that have been there a day or so merely hover and as soon as a table is free - take it. It is chaotic. It not that the staff aren’t working - they are and very hard too – but there are not enough of them to clear tables and manage the seating. They do as well as can be expected, but for a hotel of this claimed quality it is a mess.
The chaos is a real shame as the food itself and the variety is excellent. All sorts of cereals are available; Hot food includes all the usual suspects: eggs (just about any way you want them) bacon, pancakes etc; Fruit, both fresh in large quantities and tinned; Breads of varying types; Colds meats, pates, cheeses; Croissants, pastries, cakes; juices various, well the list goes on. You could explode with the food on offer here and it’s all good quality. We never went hungry and were really glad we ended up with B&B.

LUNCH & DINNER – The restaurant is the same place as where breakfast is taken – and that’s not a bad thing. It’s nicely laid out and the menu looked reasonable. For us though, there were plenty of restaurants around the resort we wanted to try so we didn’t eat here and so cant really comment on the food.

ENTERTAINMENT – There seemed to be something on every night and the entertainment team worked really hard to include everybody. We like to get out and about in the resort so in fact we didn’t really see much of the night time entertainment, but what we did see was full of enthusiasm.
At New Year they really pushed the boat out and made it a great evening which was still in full swing when we eventually got back – so we joined in and had a great time.
For the kids, the staff worked hard and were obviously loved as they had a trail of kids chasing them wherever they went. Plenty of languages spoken so all got on well together which was great to see.

PLAY DEL INGLES

TOWN –We last went to Playa Del Ingles (PDI) for New Year 2006 and not that much seems to have changed. It’s pretty much a concrete jungle of hotels and apartments interspersed with tourist oriented shopping/entertainment centers. The locals tend to live in adjoining San Fernando. PDI is not a particularly pretty resort, but it is very clean, generally well maintained and has sufficient variety to cover off the McDonalds fans through to top quality restaurants. Generally the majority do tend toward the massive menu with food of average quality and very aggressive tactics to get you inside.

The commercial centres have different faces daytime, nighttime and aimed for demographic. The two main ones are :
Yumbo Centre: This is the main gay centre, but if you’re not gay don’t be put off. It’s a mostly friendly place (restaurant fillers aside) and everybody is welcome. Often shows in and around and fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The tourist centre is just outside as is a taxi rank and main bus stops.

Kasbah – Generally described by the name Kasbah, this really covers 3 small/medium sized centres next to each other. Kasbah itself is a very run down ugly circular dump with some grimy clubs at the bottom level and not much else to recommend it. If you are very young, have little money and just want to get drunk, hopefully pull and listen to load music, you’ll probably love it – otherwise avoid. Next is Metro which is fairly small and has a central square which locals often have dances in. It’s an odd bedfellow to Kasbah, but a better option. Finally plaza Maspalomas another small centre which is generally family friendly

PDI seems to be the epicenter of mini-golf as just about every hotel has a course and there are numerous stand alone courses throughout the resort of varying difficulty and state of repair. Perhaps the most obvious, best kept and most expensive is the one at Yumbo centre. It quite good fun with the kids but does get busy.

BEACH – Well what can you really say about the beach and sand dunes of Maspalomas – apart from they’re big, sandy and can be windy. During the period we were there it was a bit too cool and windy to spend much time on the beach, but in the summer months it must be a sun lovers paradise. There appears to be plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas and the prom behind the beach has plenty of bars and restaurants if you need a break. It is a lot more “Kiss Me Quick” than Almalfi coast but if you don’t mind that it’s no worse than a lot of other over developed European holiday resorts.

FOOD AND DRINK – Of course the key income for the area is tourists and the place is set up for that. If your idea of fun is going on holiday to go to a fake Irish pub, you can find it here. And there are plenty of places selling Full English in the mornings and full roast on Sundays so if that’s your bag you’re well catered for. Alternatively if you want a curry, Mexican, Italian, or Chinese, they are available in PDI but we mostly passed them by so can’t comment on their quality. I have given more detailed reviews of the restaurants we ate in in the restaurant review sections of TA, but here is a taster:

Rimini – excellent Italian restaurant in sophisticated surroundings. Not cheap, but great value for money.

Las Tapas – A surprise Spanish gem in a wilderness of average food. If you eat inside go right inside rather than the conservatory for some atmosphere.

El Churrasco – A brilliant Argentinean grill serving some of the best meat I have eaten anywhere and at reasonable prices. Limited desert menu (on an ipad – go figure), but the service at the table is entertainment in itself.

El Duke – had lunch only and evening drinks and both were excellent. Service great and keenly priced.

La Canela – Surprisingly good local food in the Yumbo centre. Lots of atmosphere

Capacao – Tapas bar in San Fernando. Quirky but over-rated, slow service and food mostly average

Room Tip: Rooms on the mini-golf side of the hotel get sun on the balcony most of the day and look over the po...
