I was expecting a good hotel, but was warmly greeted on arrival and given a beautiful 2 bed bungalow with roof terrace and patio... Amazing ! Great food... All the staff including the gardeners would say hello and smile.. The maids were just great, really friendly and so hardworking.. I couldn't fault anything and won't stay anywhere else in the future A+++++

My husband & I took our 2 children (13 & 9) to this hotel back in July 2011 for 2 weeks. We had a 2 bedroomed apartment looking over the pool area. The hotel was really nice, clean and what you would expect from a Spanish hotel in Gran Canaria.

The comments previously regarding the Dutch is true, unfortunately! I say unfortunately because in my experience of working with the Dutch over the years, I have always found them to be a very pleasant race. Sadly, this is not the case when they're all together and on holiday! The Brits were few & far between in this hotel, and this had a massive impact not only on us, but more importantly the children and their ability to relax and make any friends.

The surrounding area, Yumbo was, in a word, horrible (this is of course our opinion), however, would definitely disagree with previous comments that it was rough, scary, whatever. There were plenty of food establishments serving all the usual cuisine and an array of shops with gifts, etc.

We hired a car for 2 days and went round the island - would totally recommend a trip down and along the coast to Mogan, Puerto Rico and definitely a little further along to Puerto De Las Nieves, especially on a Sunday afternoon when the local Spanish are out in force - it was really authentic!

Our biggest recommendation however is Meloneras - this place is a hidden gem, and only 5 minutes taxi ride from our hotel! We wish we had stayed here instead! A truly lovely resort (though the beach was rubbish to be fair!).

Have just returned from a week at the Sol Barbacan(10-17th Sept) and was pleasantly surprised by both accomodation and staff at the hotel, having been to Gran Caneria(Playa del Ingles) on a budget before and stayed in 'decent value' hotels this was by far the best of the bunch with an excellent location and small supermarket attached to the ground floor.
We stayed in the hotel(h/board) part of the complex rather than the bungalows in the gardens,it was very clean throughout, the apartment was big with a large balcony that not only had a table with 4 chairs but also 2 sun loungers and still had room for a clothes drier.
The apartment was well equipped(h dryer/fan/air con/all kitchen equip/toaster/microwave/f/freezer etc and had a tv upgrade whilst we were there(now has countless channels),the rooms were cleaned daily and towels/linen replaced fresh daily. The pool area was good decent sized circular pool with a small jacuzzi and kids pool to the side of it.The dining area was lovely with a buffet menu and a la carte restaurant attached, food was as expected but with a few gems and mains changed daily...there was also plenty of it..although you do need to pay for your drinks with evening meals seperately..cocktail bars 7-8 bogof happy hour criminally under used whilst we were there(only 5 euros each)as dinner starts at 730pm(Brits were the only ones to take advantage?)..guests were mainly German/Brits(families with toddlers/30's-60's) but staff were friendly with all as experienced when my partner had a birthday bottle of fizzy plonk and card waiting for them in the room on the day from the hotel owner(very personnel touch)..and also when we arrived after 10pm and were sent up a meal from the kitchen just 10mins after checking in(excellent gesture).Animation team(reps) people(x6) worked sooo hard(without being intrusive),they were there from breakfast to 11pm with daily entertainment at the pool to nightly events at the cocktail bar,all were polite and greeted you at every opportunity.
Overall excellent for families with/out kids, couples or groups..brilliant service/staff and cleanliness throughout. Will be definately returning.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side got sunshine all day, rooms on the west mainly afternoon and lovely evening s...

From the moment we entered the Barbacan we were treated extremely well by the friendly and polite staff. Our apartment was on ground floor and although patio was a bit compared to others it was not a problem for us as we spent most of our time by the pool. There are plenty of restaurants etc within a short walk of complex, apart from one mediocre meal any of the restaurants we visited were very good.If you like the beach it's about 20 minute walk, it's a beautiful beach but we prefer pool, a lot less sand ! The complex is about 90 per cent dutch which was not a problem as we found the majority of them easy going and friendly.
What i liked best was the friendly safe atmosphere, selection of activities for kids, teens and adults. The animation team were very good. There was'nt really anything we disliked, the Barbacan provides a good base for an excellent family holiday.10/9

We stayed at the Sol Barbacan in July 2011.

We were impressed with the apartments, which were spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. We were travelling with a baby and therefore had many requests of staff (highchair, cot, extra bedding, extra towels, etc) and each request was quickly met and always with a smile. They even programmed room cleaning in line with baby's sleep time!

Breakfast was included and was good quality. There was a wide variety that was suitable for younger and older people.

The facilities too were very good. There was one main pool, a smaller pool (if you wanted to chill away from all the activity in the main pool) and a baby pool (which had loads of toys for kids to play with). There were tennis courts (at an extra cost), table tennis and a small play area for toddlers. The apartments are within walking distance of commercial areas and shops. The beach is a quite a walk away but taxis are reasonable (approx €3 each way).

All in all this is a good place to go with family. We definately recomend and will surely be back again.

what a lovely hotel, just back after 9 nights and we loved it.we stayed in a 1 bed apt which had everything we needed, the kitchen had everything, the bathroom had everything and the place was cleaned every day, immaculate.the air-con was free . the balcony had sun-loungers as well as table and chairs and we felt very safe here.
the hotel has a policy about reserving sun-beds,we did see towels etc being removed and taken to reception.
dont know about the restaurant as we were self catering but never heard anyone complain.
the pool was quite average but the jacuzzi was fab.
the hotel was very quiet at night, never got disturbed once.
also was close to the yumbo centre and restaurants, although a good 20min walk to the beach but got taxis back for less than 3euros.terrific

This was our 2nd visit to Sol Barbacan. We had a 1 bed apartment on the 5th floor. The apartments have been refurbished since our last visit. Bedroom nice size with plenty of wardrobe space and a patio door and window. Living room great size with large patios doors onto the huge balcony, with table 4 chairs and 2 sunbeds. Kitchen with microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine and 2 hot plates. Also seating area for 4 to eat. TV only have bbc world news and CNN, however, the dutch channels have many programmes in english with dutch subtitles, watched many movies before going out to play! We also took a mini dvd player and plugged into the back of main tv.

Good Stuff: Bathrooms were good size with plenty of counter surface for all your bits! Shower will knock you over if on to high! Plenty of hot water. Rooms cleaned and towels replenished when you want them. Air con in bedroom and living room and worked well. The position of the hotel is great.

Let downs: No iron and board in room, hotel will get them in for you, but 36E for 12 nights is excessive and for a 4 key apartment, they should be provided. Breakfast wasn't the nicest experience, not many hot choices, all meats and cakes, the bacon was typical streaky stuff. Internet available in reception, over priced 2E for 15mins, but those who need to print boarding passes can do so.
The 9am sunlounger scrum was funny, they have security who will not let you reserve sunbeds until after this time. People hanging around with all there towels at the ready.....dont do it earlier or the security man will remove them and dump them! Then these people go off for breakfast and leave them for hours. The main pool is small for a complex of this size. After 12pm you haven't got a chance in hell of getting one. Restaurant well over priced £25 for steak?!? Your having a laugh.
One guy on reception a miserable sod. Washing machines 1 washer for the whole complex 4E for 30 min cycle which just managed to freshen clothes.
At 10am the speakers were turned on with a horrific song saying good morning, good morning then a mulitude of ramblings down a microphone telling of the days wonderful activities, thanks for the wake up call! NOT!

Would we stay here again, maybe, but it would have to be a good deal.
