We had seen this hotel previously and decided to try it out on our next visit to Gran Canaria because of it's location and we weren't disappointed. The view from our balcony looked out over the hotel terrace, the pool and, albeit in the distance, the dunes and ocean. The room itself was spacious, some would say dated but I would call 'Spanish'. The walls are a bit thin and the maids pounding along the tiled corridor outside the door with their carts, early in the morning took some getting used to! The welcoming basket of fruit and Cava were a nice gesture although the cost of 16 euros/week for the room safe probably recouped the cost of both. The bathroom was again spacious with everything necessary although the shower curtain with bath is no substitute for a shower cubicle and I didn't care for the shower gel dispenser at all. The shower itself however, was great and the towels were always of very good quality, unlike some hotels where they are a little 'thin'!
The area around both pools was a little crowded and the inevitable 'reserving' of sunbeds from the break of dawn did not help! The poolside bar/restaurant provided very good lunchtime meals at a reasonable price. The meals in the restaurant were 'mixed' and the system of having two 'sittings' was a bit limiting. Although there was no problem in getting our choice of the later sitting. there was inevitable crowding at the serveries. Breakfasts were very good but although there were plenty of choices at dinner, it all became a bit 'samey'. There was a welcome break from the main restaurant in the 'oasis' of the hotel's new Krystal restaurant - unfortunately, limited to one visit per week's stay. With welcome waiter service and excellent food we were amazed more guests did not take advantage of it. The evening entertainment was again mixed and often not good enough to distract from other attractions. Wi-fi available only in the lobby was a little disappointing and maybe this hotel could provide it in the bedrooms as they do in most of the other Riu hotels.
Overall, this hotel is in an excellent location with tranquil ambience at a good price. The staff are extremely friendly, professional and accommodating providing great, prompt service and we would happily stay again.

Room Tip: As for high floor overlooking the pool and dunes.

This was our first holiday to Gran Canaria and although the main area of Playa del Ingles is not far, as it is in such a lovely position it makes you forget where you are. As it is in such a isolated position it takes a while to walk into town, so take a taxi at night, less than 4 euros to the Yumbo centre or the Kasbah centre.
We travelled at the beginning of May for 2 weeks and from the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome. Handed our passports over and while we were checked in we were invited to relax and have a glass of cava. When ready we were handed our key and our bags were taken to our room. 1st floor room 1094 with a view across to Meloneras, the dunes and the sea.
If you walk across the dunes to Meloneras after 10 am make sure you wear trainers, my toes kept burning in my flip flops, it takes 45 minutes to walk across.
There were apartments below us but not occupied yet due to the time of year. If you were on the ground floor they would block the view. It was very peaceful, the birdsong beautiful.
After minutes reception called to check if we were happy with the room, we were. There was a small bottle of cava and a bowl of fruit! Nice touch. TIP - Swap it with the ice cold one in the mini bar. The hotel operates a policy of not changing bedding or towels unless you require them changed, a good green ethic. Room was cleaned everyday and the bed made. Safe in the room, 32 euros for 2 weeks, deep safe big enough for an iPad. Bathroom had hair dryer, bidet, shower gel dispenser over the bath. Good shower although we had trouble with the curtain, kept getting stuck to you as you washed. Air con was very good and there was also a ceiling fan.
Flat screen TV.....sky news, Fox channel and a mixture of others in English and various languages. Balcony was very large and the loungers had cushions as did the footstools, we spent many afternoons reading after a day around the pool or the beach. There is also a small washing rail that pulls out if you want to hang any washed items, so remember to take some pegs.
We arrived after 8.30 pm and reception told us to go nd have dinner as soon as we could, as dinner was still being served. There are two sittings for dinner 6.30 and 8.30. The head waiter had us for the 8.30 sitting and asked if we wanted that or the 6.30, which we chose. You are allocated a table for dinner which remains yours for the whole stay. This is great as you don't have to arrive at 6.30 to eat, sometimes we came down at 7, as long as you are finished by 8.15 so they can set the table for the next sitting.
Having the same table meant the waiter got used to what you generally drank, so after a couple of days our bottles of water were on the table but they always checked as we sat, before they opened them. People dressed for dinner, men must wear long trousers or jeans are fine and a shirt or T shirt and shoes or trainers.
Breakfast you sit anywhere and you can dress as casual as you want to.
Both dinner and breakfast are buffet with a huge selection, some nights it was difficult to choose. On your table for dinner is the menu so you can see what is being served and at what area. It does get very busy and we found that if you arrive just before 7pm most early eaters have moved onto dessert.
The pool area is lovely and was peaceful when we were there, the loungers have padded cushions and you are given pool towels. Although there are plenty of loungers, we found that after 9.30 we struggled to get one. The hotel tries to prevent people reserving but it still happens, so you find yourself doing the same. The pool is very clean and we saw them testing the water at least twice a day and also the Jacuzzi.
There is a pool service and waiters take your order and bring it to you, very reasonable prices, 7.50 for two large beers. We also tried the milkshake for 5.50 each.
Toilets at the pool are very clean as is the pool area.
There is a gourmet restaurant to try at no extra cost, you just have to book in advance for a table. It is worth trying at least once.
We can honestly that every member of staff was friendly and more than happy to help. They greeted us every time they saw us. Everyone seems to care that you are there and they care that you are happy. The hotel director personally makes his way around all the tables at dinner to introduce himself to new guests.
We were celebrating our 25 wedding anniversary and on the day we were surprised with a full bottle of cava in an ice bucket and a posy of roses in our room. They also decorated our table at dinner and made a special starter and dessert for us. Staff took the trouble to congratulate us and shake hands.
I could say that in places the odd thing needed to be spruced up, such as the reception furniture being a little worn...but then nothing such as that effects what a wonderful place this is and what great staff they have. Little things like that do not affect your holiday, this was the best holiday we have had in years and we will be returning next year to this hotel.

I remember being a lot younger and staying in good hotels booked through UK tour operators when the flight and hotel were part of the same package. I used to walk by The Riu Placae in the early evening and peer through the cracks in the fence and wonder at the smartly dressed guests enjoying pre-dinner drinks and cocktails served by highly attentive waiters.

I managed to save up and stay there for just a few days back in 2009.

Ever since I have realised that there is NO alternative and I have saved like crazy in order to stay there every year since. There are very few and almost never any kids. Kids that are there are generally so well behaved and brought up well that you would not even know they were there.

The buffet restaurant is overwhelming but you have the FREE opportunity to use the fine dining Krystal restaurant free of charge.

The staff are extremely accommodating and attentive. There is nothing more relaxing than to sit on the terrace at early evening and be waited on hand and foot whilst a live band plays popular music just enough in the background to be enjoyed but not so overpowering that you have to raise your voice.

I love the fact that there are people outside peering in just as I did many years ago, except that they are peering in at me and no doubt feel as jealous as I did all that time ago.

Top Tip for UK visitors (1): book direct with the hotel's company web site and get the best rates. You do not normally have to pay up front which means you can book ahead and then periodically check the rates and then cancel your original booking and take advantage of better deals. I have just saved over £350 by doing this. Always go for half-board as it is more than enough for your needs. Drinkies are of course extra but for a 10 night stay you will only spend around £50 per day per couple on drinks and that is for more than moderate drinkers. Go for a Kia Royale... a miniature bottle of fizz with Crème de Casis....they don't charge for the Crème de Casis making this lovely drink a mere £3

Top Tip for UK Visitors (2) get a flight from a local airline and get really good deal. You will have to fly out of Heathrow and change at Madrid but as a scheduled service it is seldom delayed and you are totally assured the quality of an airline that code-shares with a main airline. For two of us we paid less than £300 for two return tickets including taxes and baggage. Much less than going direct with a UK charter or budget airline.

You have to trust this review. I have read others (even those who are quite favourable) but some people on this review site will whine about the most silly things - for example - the person who says that the restaurant buffet being a "stampede"..... it is NOT. There is plenty of food for everyone AND throughout the entire length of the dining service. UK charter holiday patrons inevitably decide to wait outside the restaurant doors, checking their watches for the moment the clock strikes the hour and then rush in as the doors open... so what the hell do they expect other than a stampede that THEY are creating by their "don't want to miss out" and greedy behaviour.... hey... where else in this class of hotel could you be offered FREE FLOWING Cava at breakfast???.... never tried it myself because it doesn't go with a full freshly prepared fry-up does it?... but I bet loads of people take it just because it is there and therefore their right.

To summarise: Book direct. Book flights direct. Check the rates. Enjoy the sun.

Just back from a 7 day break at this hotel in Gran Canaria. The rooms are spacious and extremely clean although you will need a room above the first floor for a good view of the dunes and sea.
There is plenty of space around the pool with enough sun beds for everybody and the whole atmosphere is peaceful and very relaxing. All the hotel staff we met were absolutely fantastic, friendly and could not be more helpful - a real asset to the hotel and the overall experience.
To get to the sea there is a pretty long trip across the dunes - not sensible if windy which it occasionally is in the Canaries. Overall the weather was great but never felt oppressively hot because of the constant but pleasant breeze.
I have read that the hotel is a colonial style - which it is but the general feeling is impressive.
We will certainly consider returning in the future - a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Higher floors are recommended for the promised sea view

We went to the new restaurant which is just on the left as you walk through the archway to the hotel.

We assumed wrongly it was for guests but we managed to get a table,

The food was good and the hotel itself was very grand. We walked around the terraces, and whilst it could do with some remedial work it still have the colonial grandeur I always remember.

Will be back for sure.

What can I say about this superb hotel that hasn't aready been said on trip advisor.
From the moment that we arrived, and having a taxi transfer we arrived early, mid afternoon ,we were treated like Royalty. We were invited to a have glass of Champagne on the patio while our passports were registered.Within five minits we were told our room was ready. We were taken to our room, with sea view overlooking the pool as requested, beautiful.the Cocierge in the Sailors Uniform is the most pleasant man, always smiling and making good conversation.

We went down to the pool bar for some food.Every member of staff welcomed us back, we found sun loungers even in the afternoon and had a two hour sleep.

We heard rumours that the food had gone down slightly in the Restaurant,we didn't see any change in the quality,or choice. The menus were on the table and while it is buffet style, we could choose to have waiter service bring our choice to the table. The only changes that we noticed in the restaurant were that the cheese trolly had been changed for an even bigger choice of cheeses displayed on the dedicated area.
The restaurant staff were helpful they didnt hurry us and our waitress Maria was wonderful , always smiling, and helpful.

Love the outdoor Patio for breakfast, about 50 tables are available, we ate breakfast in the open air every morning.
Breakfast buffet is awsome!

We love the styling of the Hotel, some younger people commented that the styling is dated and needs modernising,I dont think that minimalist styling , which seems to be the way that most refurbs go, would improve the quality feel that the hotel currently offers.
We stayed May 6th - 20th. This was Gay pride time, with at least 40 -50 % of the guests being Gay. The atmosphere was fantastic.

Looking foward to returning for our sixth visit to Riu Palace Maspalomas on December 23rd 2013 for two weeks.

We arrived at the hotel at about 12.30 pm 14th May 2013 and expected the usual Riu welcome. We have gone to their Hotels since 2004 and visited this Hotel in 2011-best holiday ever, This time no proper greeting .No one to carry our bags , room on low floor not sea view as asked for so asked for change of room -given not gladly. Had to move bags from first room to new room. Not a great start.
Restaurant very rushed ,not a relaxed take your time meal and great long queues at the food stations .We ordered wine every night but felt we had to make up our minds very fast . One waiter was very rude .Although I have to say all the rest were lovely but I did feel that they were under pressure.
I feel so glad that reading some of the reviews of people that had stayed at the hotel at the same time as us felt the same way about it .We felt that it was just us .
The Hotel, we felt was more for the German people and that we were not as welcome guests. Still a lovely Hotel though and the food is good but we left feeling a little unwanted and the Thompson rep after he had taken our money never looked our way again

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor if you want to see the sea. Only the rooms on the top floor get the...
