The hotel has been totally refurbished, the swimming pool is new, spotless clean and very stylish.
All the staff is very efficient and polite, plenty of food even for the fussiest eater, with 12 euros extras per person you can dine in the restaurant "a la carte", worth the extra, peaceful, quiet and excellent food.
I have to say that you feel like at home and not in a hotel, that is probably the best part.
Would like to thank especially Nadine at the reception who helped us with a better room.

Stayed at the hotel from 27th August to 10th September 2012. No complaints what so ever. The accommodation was clean, modern and well maintained. Maid service every day for room and was always left as you would expect. Swimming pool attendant regularly cleaning area throughout the day, not that it needed it. Food was excellent - something for everyone. All staff wonderful and so pleasant and friendly. Entertainment good too. Son had a birthday while there and when we arived for dinner they had a candle on the table and provided a free glass of champagne to each of us. On last evening staff in restaurant new we were living next day and wished us well - great communication by staff. Would highly recommend and would go back tomorrow!

Just arrived back from staying in Hotel Riu Don Miguel, Gran Canaria 27/8/2012 to 3/9/2012
It is a beautiful hotel and really deserves to be a 4* not a 3* as it has been refurbished this year. The staff are very helpful and friendly, especially Sowe. The food is exellent, varied and plentiful. very comfortable sunbeds, (all new) not the plastic ones you usually find. The pool was kept clean and the surounding area. I went with daughter and 9yr old grandson, the room was great, the beds clean and comfortable. This hotel sits on a roundabout but this does not detract from enjoyment. It did not interfere with sleep as it was quiet at night after 11pm.
Exellent holiday, I would recomend this hotel to anyone.

I've been a regular visitor to GC for the last 30 yrs and usually stay in an apartment but was persuaded by a friend to try his regular accommodation at the Don Miguel. Really is a very clean, friendly and well positioned hotel. I am going back again in October and looking forward to seeing the new rooms after the summer refit.
I can understand some of the negative comments made about the restaurant. However I would say that from personal experience gay guests are normally offered the 8pm sitting because families usually want earlier sittings. I found restaurant staff very helpful and, where possible they will try to offer you another table where possible. To be honest, we enjoyed meeting people at table and making conversation, although many of the German guests were reluctant to even say hello. The food was very good, maybe not exceptional, but certainly good value for money with hearty breakfasts before a walk to the beach.
All in all a good hotel, well priced, well positioned with nice staff. Roll on October!

Unlike several of the Riu group of hotels that we have frequented over recent years. This particular hotel is somewhat 'tired' looking hence the reason that it will be closed for sometime in April to July for improvements to be carried out. However, even in its present condition as a 3 star establishment the facilities are good and the service excellent.
The management and staff were all very friendly and accommodatiing and only too eager to please. As was the Thomson representative called Alex who was very helpful, patient and fun to have around particularly as it was "Carnival time" in Playa del Ingles.
We stayed for a period of 4 weeks during February and March. Due to the location of the hotel there is a certain amount of traffic noise during the day but this wasn't noticeable at night. The food in the hotel is excellent with plenty of choice both at breakfast and evening meals which are all buffet style. The waiting staff are very efficient and friendly. The evening entertainment is varied with several professional acts each week and a resident duo. The pool area and bar areas are pleasant enough with a number of sunbeds available most of the time. Overall this hotel is good value for money and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone.Once the proposed improvements have been finished then the accommodation will be second to none for a 3 star hotel. Enjoy as we did.

Room Tip: Pool view if available send email to hotel prior to visit.

I have just returned from 7 days at this hotel. It felt more like a 5 star rather than 3 star.
All standards were excellent. The staff were all friendly, helpful and polite.
The restaurant served excellent food, always a choice of 3 or 4 main dishes with a large selection of cold food and salads. The staff were impeccibly dressed in in black and white with dickie bows at the evening meal - no 'sloppy' dress as is often the case.
Rooms were a little outdated but spotlessly clean with fress flowers on the bedroom table;
little things that went a long way.
I would thoroughly recommend to all friends and anyone considering staying at this location.
BRILLIANT.

Room Tip: Think all rooms had reasonable views.

We stayed here recently (Feb 2012). We are a gay couple late twenties and a friend had recommended it as being in a good location for the Yumbo. Although there was no availability on Riu's website the hotel was available on some 'other' hotel booking websites, approx 2 weeks before the stay
We opted (I say opted, it was the only rate available) for dinner and breakfast rate. Normally we've stayed in more budget apartments and so staying in a hotel seemed nice especially since we would have dinner included as we were only there 4 nights.
The hotel is easy to find (get the Global bus from the airport to the Yumbo for 3euro if there's only a couple of you), it's on the north side of the Yumbo.. About 10mins walk from the bus stop.
There's are free shuttle to the main playa del ingles 'strip' a couple of times a day which would be handy if you needed it.

The hotel is nice, has a great pool with lots of loungers and a nice, reasonably priced, bar by the pool which is nice in the afternoon. You cannot use the (very small) bath towels by the pool. The pool area is immaculate however by late afternoon a lot of the loungers are in the shade.

Our room was on the third floor overlooking the pool. I think it was 324. Unfortunately it had no balcony and so we enquiered at reception to change. We looked at another room but this was tiny, round the back of the hotel and having read the reviews we decided to stay with the one we had. I must say having no balcony was quite disappointing.. I think we were perhaps unlucky as looking up at the rooms from the pool area it would seem it's probably only the '.24' rooms which don't have one - so probably 5 or 6 rooms in the main block. Oh well. We did ask twice again but were told nothing avail. After that it wasn't worth asking as only there 4 nights. The two 'wings' of the hotel are quite big and so we thought ourselves lucky to at least have a pool view.
The room was nice. Very clean. Two single beds (not ideal!) No iron (reception has some but they don't have ironing boards?). No tea/coffee facilities. A large LCD tv but only 1 channel (fox) was English, I guess u don't go on holidays for the tv. A safe which we didn't use but you must pay for. No aircon (not an issue in winter as its cold at night but in summer would be interesting)..

Now, The dining arrangements. Breakfast I would say for a hotel of this rating is excellent. Good choice of hot/cereal/cold plus fruit. Very relaxed. Sit where you like. Served 8-10. There's an outdoor terrace which we sat out at .. No view but was nice. Staff helpful.
Dinner, I can only describe as bizarre verging on the uncomfortable. You are allocated a set time (either 6pm or 8pm during our stay) at which time you must eat every night. 8pm was offered thankfully, there is no way we would have accepted 6pm as the nightlife in the Yumbo doesn't really get going until very late, way too early. This is presumably done as the dining room isn't anywhere near large enough to accommodate all of the guests should they all choose to dine at say, 8pm.
On your first night you are also allocated a set table, we had a larger one which was nice. I'd say the food choice is good not excellent (as you'd expect I think). My partner ate a lot of pizza, put it that way. From the 2nd night however we were joined at 'our' table by two other guys. Unfortunately they weren't, how do I put it, the kind of people we would choose to sit with on holiday. We asked the supervisor if we could move to a 2-seat table but were told 'no, they are needed for our guests' (what were we?). This really spoilt it for us.. We were easily the two youngest people in the dining are (I'd say the average age is early-to-late forties, mainly German guests). Although relatively young i regularly stay in 4/5 star hotels for work and this is not something I've ever experienced. Being forced to slurp away quietly and talk in mumbles next to two strangers at dinner, potentially every night for your entire holiday, to me seems so old-fashioned it is almost laughable. It also annoyed us that this was 'luck of the draw' as to which table you were allocated on your first night.. We could see couples who'd presumably paid the same as us enjoying a relaxed romantic meal at their 2-person table! While when you looked around there were many (and I mean a LOT) of people sat in silence!
We didn't eat in the restaurant again.

On the whole it's a good hotel which could easily be made a 4 star, as the essential facilities are all there. Improve the tv, towels, toiletries (showever gel etc in awful little sachets like something from kfc), maybe make the wifi free and certainly stop charging for the safe. OVERHAUL THE DINNER ARRANGEMENTS completely! What's strange that the space taken by having 4-person tables (the majority are 4 person tables, the majority of guests looked liked 2-person couples trying to make conversation..) could seemingly just be taken up with a larger amount of 2-person tables. Maybe it's a Spanish thing.

Would we stay at the hotel again, yes, but I don't think it would be our first choice. With somewhere like Gran Canaria, I think you're after somewhere cheap and cheerful such as an aparthotel with a Kitchenette area or all-out luxury such as a Riu Palace. This hotel is neither and I certainly would never opt for dinner-included again. I'd think it'd be great for families with kids, though we saw only one or two in the 4 days while we were there.
