“Undoubtedly the place to be in Gran Canaria”

With all due respect, Playa del Ingles is not the most picturesque of holiday destinations. The Birdcage, however, is a corner of paradise: once you’ve gone through the gate, an oasis of peace is before you, with a manicured tropical garden, a good size pool and rooms and apartments beautifully decorated, functionally structured and perfectly cleaned. A delightful breakfast area with a variety of choices also adds to the list of positive features. Just lovely!

This is our second stay two years running at the bird cage, We stayed September last year and this year we decided July.

This resort is in a fantastic location close the Yumbo and a 3 euro taxi ride to the beach. The resort has a large nice swimming pool lovely grounds and places to relax.

The resort offers a buffet breakfast with hot food to order too. very nice but they could offer more hot food as the quantities of hot food isn't much. The breakfast area is lovely outside and very nicely put together seating, tables crockery etc..

Rooms are nice with air con in the bedroom only but we survived. the rooms were cleaned and fresh bedding and towels are available everyday.

Staff we didn't see much they are helpful but would be nice if we seen more of them, we got free drinks around the pool one day from Stephan which was really nice. Cleaner didn't speak English but she was a lovely lady and tried to interact with us.

On our stay work was being carried out on two days which woke us up and was a little bit annoying but after a little discussion with staff this was resolved.

We would stay here again because the place is so nice and both times we have stayed here its been quite so we have had the whole place to ourselves. One thing we would like to see is food served during the day sandwiches or some small hot food choices.

Ants and cockroaches are seen here but like most hot country's its going to happen. They provide sprays for this.

Try this place out it may be your thing but it may not be your thing. Good location, Good rooms, Good grounds. It has less than 10 rooms so it beats a hotel with hundreds of guests and you feel more relaxed.

Nice B&B type of place. Nice breakfast spread. Lounge closed up at evenings, which is sad, as there is no inside place to sit at evenings. OK swimming pool. Large room. Main problem: very low water pressure, making hot showers a hassle.

Safe secluded area near the Yumbo. Few restaurants nearby except at the Yumbo, and past it. Distance to the beach no problem, as taxis to Maspalomas are easy to find, and cheap.

I returned to this beautiful resort after a wonderful stay during June 2012. I received a very warm welcome from Andre and Volker and was escorted to the Flamingo Cage. Yet again it was beautifully furnished and the sense of peace in the resort quickly returned to me. I had a relaxing afternoon, evening and night....truly splendid!!! I was invited to move to my favourite cage, the Nightingale, the next day. It truly added to my holiday and reflects the concern the staff show to each individuals needs.

After a delicious breakfast (and they are the best!!!) I made my way to my new abode. Wonderful terrace with high grade sun loungers and tables and chairs and garden. The beautiful living room with large sofa, tv, dvd, my favourite fridge bar and boutique furnishings. But I could not wait to gaze on my oversized bed and gorgeous bathroom. I popped open another bottle of white wine and turned relaxation into an art form.

I had eight days of heaven in the Birdcage. The guests once again were a pleasure to be amongst.

I would like to offer praise again to our wonderful housekeper and mother (Volga) for her love and care during my stay. Thanks also to Fatima on Sunday, beautiful girl. Thank you Andre for a beautiful bottle of wine on my last day. You all deserve nothing but the highest praise!!! And my friends, the birds in the garden also deserve some thanks.

Sadly, I did not get into the pool during this stay as I have to watch myself in the sun. But let me add that the grounds and the facilities are a credit to all concerned. I was shown one of the newly renovated rooms and it just impresssed on me how the Birdcage keeps going from strength to strength.

On my last day I showed a friend who had just arrived the resort. He had only seen it in pictures from my last stay. Dear Birdcage, you have another fan.

I finished my stay with a warm hug from Volga and then was greeted by my beautiful chauffeur for a relaxing drive back to the airport.

Already making arrangements to return! Love to you all xXx

The Birdcage Resort is a nice place, compared to many others in playa del ingles, no doubt. But during our stay we have been a bit dissappointed, to tell the truth.
"First-class personal Service!": During our 2weeks there we have never been asked how is everything going, do you need any recommendations for restaurants etc. Sometimes we even did´t feel very welcome. The staff serving the breakfast was really friendly. But the owners sometimes even didn´t say hello/good morning when they entered the room while we had breakfast.
"The hotel is individually decorated in designer style!" Ok, individually, but our room was more a mishmash of IKEA and do-it-yourself store with any designconcept, sorry.
The breakfast was ok too. But it was nothing special. One day we had some salmon, one day we had strawberries. But you had to be quick, because things runned out soon. Several days we had to ask for some more rolls and croissants (there usually was only one in the basket). Of course, we got some more. But we didn´t feel welcome...


Overall,its a nice, family owned guesthouse, but not a 4* boutique hotel. Our biggest minus is not the "private terrace" that turned out to be really small and shady or the fact that the jacuzzi was broken and we didn´t notice any efforts to change this during our 2weeks stay. We just didn´t feel at home there, we didn´t feel welcome at all.

Room Tip: Staying in the "swancage" we could hear every word from the reception or some utility room...

At Birdcage Resort they certainly look after the property extremely well. The guests are sometimes quite well looked after too.

The grounds are beautifully landscaped and nicely maintained. Being greeted by a number of signs warning guests not to step on the grass is, something I've not come across before.

My room, a garden suite, had a lovely semi-private terrace, a well furnished sitting room and nicely refurbished bathroom.

The bedroom itself was slightly disappointing by comparison in that the blind was too narrow for the window and the large room needed more lights. I did not find the traffic noise others had mentioned bothersome. What was odd was, as a single occupancy, they had removed half the pillows from the bed and half the towel set from the bathroom. This seemed a bit mean spirited.

The complimentary little bottle of cava on arrival was appreciated though.

The breakfast area is beautiful and with a decent spread with some hot egg dishes available on request in addition to the buffet. But on half of the days, even 2 hours before the end of breakfast service, they had run out of core items like croissants. I am told this is to reduce wastage. I understand this but at EUR175 per night, I think they could be a bit more generous.

There is a bar room which is large for the size of the property. I didn't really see it used very much. Perhaps if they offered a complimentary drink at 5pm it would allow a bit more interaction between those guests that want it. It would give the resort a bit more 'heart'. And it would probably increase the bar take too. This approach works really well at similar resorts in Key West and other locations.

As they had confirmed no-one was booked into my room until at least the day after my departure, I asked if I could keep the room an extra hour or possibly two as my flight was not till the evening. They refused any checkout time extension and only seemed interested in selling an extra half day to me which I did not need and declined. Yet they simultaneously agreed to a 2 hour extension free to my travel companion in a different room who was only booked at the resort at my recommendation. This spoiled the last day for me. And no one serviced my room during that two hour period I was locked out so the refusal was unnecessary. It seemed a bit mean spirited.

So overall, the resort is beautiful and they clearly take real pride in maintaining the grounds and the physical fabric. It's probably the nicest resort of its kind in Playa del Ingles and they are clearly very successful. For me, with the exception of the lady who does breakfast (sorry didn't get her name - who was both efficient and welcoming), I just think there could perhaps be a bit more heart and warmth in the guest experience.

At some point I would like to come back and see if this is so.

We arrived about 9.00pm with the driver organised by the resort. There was no-one to greet us and the driver had to let us in and show us our room!
We were very impressed with our garden suite. Altough we do feel it is very overpriced.
Breakfast was OK. Selection of cold meats, cheeses, cereals, breads etc. Eggs cooked to order.
Front of house/Customer service was a bit hit and miss! .
As far as we could work out there were 3 people 'in charge'. Stefan, Tom and Andree. Not sure who was who as they never introduced themselves to us. One of the guys was particularly rude to us several times. We asked on a couple of occasions for snacks from the pool menu and were told 'we don't have anything'. Two other times at breakfast were he completed ignored us. My partner had to almost demand poached eggs for himself and I was blanked. When I followed him to the reception area to ask him for my eggs, he sighed heavily. Our eggs were 'chucked' on our table and were so overcooked! The other time he was on duty , he just ignored us completely so we left and had breakfast elsewhere!
We asked for suggestions for dinner but were told they didnt know any! Thanks goodness for Tripadvisor, we found some lovely restaurants.
On the whole, the accomdation is lovely. Well kept gardens, a nice pool area and a 'broken' jacuzzi! Lovely cleaning lady!
The things that let it down were the cost. €155 a night is so overpriced and one third of the customer service/front of house team. The other guy and the lady were lovely!
We would return!
