This hotel has so much potential but doesn't quite hit the mark. Free wi-fi in the Madison bar is a bonus, but this bar shuts about 9.50pm so you are left to sit in a coat by the pool if you want a drink - madness. The tea and coffee machines are tepid (apart from one in the restaurant), making these beverages almost undrinkable. The wine in the restaurant is like paint stripper, and the spirits don't seem to contain any alcohol.
However, the hotel itself is well positioned, clean, and full of helpful staff - particularly at reception. The food is of a good standard, particularly the fish, which was usually cooked freshly in front of us and was delicious. Sometimes things were repeated a little too often but I never left the restaurant hungry. Sitting outside or by the entrance is best as the space by the desserts counter seems more like Woolworth's cafeteria. I was pleased to see the dress code so strongly upheld - a real bonus in my opinion.
There is a lack of space around the pool, but areas in the garden are peaceful and always available. It is difficult to get around in a wheelchair independently but no problem with an able-bodied partner, although the lifts present a problem as they are so small. Disabled rooms don't have shower cubicles or wet rooms, just over-bath showers, but the rooms are large and the balconies are massive.
If I were to visit Gran Canaria again I would certainly consider a return to the Catarina as its plusses certainly outweigh its minuses.
