“A Great Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

Have just returned from a week here and can honestly say would be happy to return.
Good points -
Staff are very helpful and courteous, and the only issue we had was resolved very satisfactorily by reception staff (We had a problem with wi-fi cutting off early & were given 24 hours free of charge).
Food was faultless - well presented and good choice.
Room was spacious & clean.
Pool area is lovely with nice garden setting and plenty of beds in different areas. Children's pool and play area is really nice.

Bar service was very good and again staff were without exception courteous. I sensed no difference in the way we were treated as AI guests compared to non - AI as mentioned in some other reviews.

Entertainment ranged from good to excellent. One band deserve particular mention - "Salseria" were excellent. It was disappointing that they only played for an hour. I'm sure more people would have got up & danced had they played a bit longer!

Not so good -

1) Air conditioning was not great, either in reception or the room.
2) Non smoking areas are clearly marked but are ignored by a number of guests & no-one seems to enforce this!

Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel, especially for families.

Thanks for your review and the your positive comment and thank you for taking your time to whrigt.
Regarding the air conditioning we try to recommend guest to close propperly the balcony doors and during the day close the blinder and at evening the room will be fresh. If we got very high temperatures some room may have some more problems due to the direct sunshine.
We hope to welcome you back to the IFA Catarina and remain,
hasta la vista!

My girlfriend and I stayed here in July, on the basis of All Inclusive. The hotel is properly organized, the food is good, and there is enough choice of beverages.

The hotel has a beautiful garden/pool, where during the day and in the evening the entertainment team gives you nice enjoyment. Some of the evening shows were really nice.

The staff of the hotel is very helpful and always friendly. The reception does a great job in answering all the questions you might have. For instance, we asked for a softer mattress and within the hour we already got it.

The surroundings are very nice, with the dunes close by. When you want to go partying there are enough possibilities. Just take a (fairly cheap) taxi from and to your hotel and you'll be at the party place in minutes (for instance the Kasbah).

The rooms were very neat, and cleaned every day. If I must name a negative point it would be the amount of sockets in your room. These days, a smartphone or camera needs to be charged sometimes (if not every day) and we had to pull out one of the lamps in the room, since that was the only available socket that you could reach (besides the bathroom).

One other point om improvement might be to make WiFi available for free, although the 1 euro for one hour is doable.

All in all, I would certainly recommend this hotel, you'll definitely enjoy your stay!

Greeting from the Netherlands!

Travelled with my boyfriend for a week at the catarina all inclusive. Nice hotel, perfect location, good food but poor entertainment, terrible rep and confusing AL service!! wll try not to repeat what others have written ...

Location: 5 minute walk to beach/dunes, 1minute walk to local supermarkets, 15-20min walk along beachfront to beachfront bars and cafes and main resort area. phamacy nearby helpful for our seasickness tablets!

Room: Massive room, very clean, balcony overlooking quiet garden area, didnt hear a sound from next door/upstairs /outside all week!! safe 2 eueros a night, 10euro deposit.

Food: excellent choice at all meal times, amazing desserts and ice cream. extremely confusing service at evening meal of having to take a bit of paper to table, they write ur drinks order and then u have to wait to hand it in. Not sure on the point of this?! Maybe to monitor drinks of AI guests ? Led to uncessary queues and frustrations.

Service: reception staff friendly and helpful, resturant staff ok and bar staff ok (blond haired waitress in resturant /bar at night as mentioned in previous review is excellent, helpful and would tell us when nearing AI time and get us in extra drinks!). The english of staff in all areas is not brilliant.

Bar: I was extremely apprehensive after reading recent reviews about the treatment of AI and english guests with other nationalities being favourites - we did not experience ANY of this , nor did any other english guests. Waiter/waitress service to tables throughout night meaning that bar staff are dealing with orders and trying to serve customers at bars = lengthy bar queues and an unncessary waiter service - as the majority of guests are AI simpply stopping the waiter service and having more staff just serving customers at the bar would make this much easier for everyone!!

Entertainment: Worst I have ever seen!! not many activities in day, evening entertainment extremely poor - a man looking very depressed with a keyboard who didnt smile for 2 whole nights, a reptile show - man with a snake and u have to pay to have photo taken with it, dancers were average, DJ master - man playing songs from about 7pm - he played decent stuff but noone wants to dance at 7pm!! change dj master to after 10pm and people (like us) would no doubt get into a party mood more and then spend more after 11pm on drinks to listen to music, magician best night of the week. The entertianment team work hard but like i say very poor. You need to get a seat about 8-830, after this expect to stand as not enough seat for hotel guests - this happened near end of week when starting peak season i would assume.

Rep: Janice (first choice / thomson) is an embarassment to the tour operators. Lies, never at the resort and dire information given from a woman thats lived there 15yrs. You can get a bus to places, aqualand ticket with her which she says is a queue jump is a lie and isnt at all, she lied to another couple who questioned if drinks were inclded in one of the nights with a meal - she said yes thorughout the time quite clearly as the couple questioned this, transaction put through and when rambling off pick up times said that drinks were only free during the meal - not eitherside, therefore lying and tried to cover it up saying the cocktails were big. So if you want to book anything through her just be clear when questioning things. We only booked the dolphin trip (see later) through her as I found it hard to book this elsewhere.

Nightlife: The nearest 'cita' is for swingers and gay population as is the yumbo centre. Take a taxi to 'kasbah' cita, this is the centre for clubs/bars (5 euro one way). Full of young people however be aware that we found the people trying to get you into places extremely aggreesive and harass you much more than I have had anywhere else. We went to MTV - 8euro ish for beer / spirit mixers, nice club.

Days out: Aqualand was ok , queues build up before lunch then seemed to die away. 25euro each for adults, locker 6euros (2euro deposit back), sunbeds 3.50euros each!!!! (we didnt buy vouchers for this, not sure how closely its policed) plenty of shaded seating areas. We got a taxi from reception (5 euros each way) . There is a bus i think, not too good times though - ask reception for the timetable (janice wont tell you they have this!).
Dolphin / whale search : 29euros adults. get picked up and taken to puerto rico. we had an hour before our boat left - not sure if this is always or not, wished we had known this could have happened as would have taken swimming stuff. beautiful beach, nice to look around. Boat trip excellent - 2 hours, we saw dolphins and whales and a turle, amazing. they take you to one of3 points. You dont go on the supercat (top catamaran) like janice tells you, its a 2 tiered boat with glass bottom windows - we actually preferred this to avoid heat!

Didnt do any other trips as we wanted to chill out more. seemed like quite a few buses to places and cheap - check these before booking with the rep.

AI entitlement: we arrived on the late flight and they had left a cold buffet for us. Yes you dont get the posh cakes or cones with your afternoon ice cream - but what are people expecting at an AI hotel, you still get fresh cakes and icecream. There did seem to be the 12 noon rule regarding end of all inclusive - i havent had this anywhere else. However if you want some tips surrounding this then message me :)

All in all a nice hotel, perfect location away from noise but near to 5min walk to beautiful views. Improving the service at bar and resturant would prevent queues and definately make things a lot simpler.

Room Tip: we had 120, overlooks gardens and no noise.

Just returned back from Catarina with 2 of my friends.. The hotel was better than expected very clean hotel with very helpfull staff. The rooms are big with a huge balcony only down side are there was no kettle/ tea making facilites so if you dont want to go down for breakfast you will have to wait till 11am for allinclusive to begin to get a brew. And ladies dont rely on the hairdryer in the room it is pants take your own, The beds are very uncomfortable! Allinclusive was great you have breakfast dinner and tea in the buffet then a pool snack bar and there is also a cafe called venice where you can get coffee icecream and cakes which is great! Only thing i could say wrong with Allinclusive was the cocktails there was only 3 to choose from which were pre-made from a bottle they are horrid!! and if you want a proper cocktail it is around 6euro! There are little raised areas away from the pool where you can lay where it is quieter away from the kids but not to far to still go in the pool. The hotel is right next door to the CITA centre and you can jump in a taxi for 3euro to go YUMBO/KASBAH centre Kasbah is AMAZING! all The reception Staff are so helpfull and friendly deffinatley the best staff there! Overall the Holiday was amazing there are more familes/couples stay at this hotel than groups of friends but still was great to just chill out in the day and party on a night! loved the holiday and would deffinatly go back

Room Tip: rooms on the front facing the road are quiter on a night away from the entertainment

Thanks for rating the IFA Catarina and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your holidays with your friends. Thanks for the time taken to wright the review.
In fact, the hotel is a favourite for couples and families with children. For groups you will find many places around to party all night long as Cita Centre, Yumbo Centre as well as the famous Kasbah with huge variety of pubs and clubs. All very closed to the IFA Catarina...
We hope to welcome you again for next season and remain,

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the Ifa Catarina at the end of June 2012 all inclusive and it was our first holiday together. All we can say is that the hotel exceeded our expectations in more ways than one and couldnt have picked a better hotel to stay in for our first holiday. The hotel in general was very clean and tidy, the pool area was amazing, the food was of excellent quality and choice, the staff were very friendly and the service they provided was excellent. The room was of ample size with aircon and the en suite was good.

On our final day, the all inclusive ended at 12pm and our transfer wasnt til 9pm however we were provided with a voucher for lunch AND dinner with a drink each. On the other hand when we first arrived we didnt check in til after 11pm and there was some buffet salad leftover for us and we were grateful enough as we were famished, however we did have to pay for our drinks. Nontheless, these were the only drinks we purchased at the hotel during our whole stay! A recommendation would be to provide late arriving guests with a soft drink with their meal.
The hotel also provided us with a courtesy room to store our luggage on the last day which included a shower with towels provided which was great.

The only negative points about the hotel were that the entertainment wasnt great but maybe that was because of personal taste, it appealed to many of the other guests nontheless.Another point is that the room did not provide tea and coffee facilities, which is very important if you are British! However we had endless tea and coffee provided at the breakfast buffet and the coffee was nice! A further point is that there were no ironing facilities in the room or anywhere in the hotel, except for the laundry and ironing service where the staff see to your clothes at an extortianate price, so taking a travel iron is recommended.

Back to the positives, in that the hotel is situated in an ideal area close to the yumbo and kasbah centres and a free shuttle bus to the beach, which is also nearby, is provided.

All in all, we though the Ifa Catarina was a fab hotel and would recommend it highly to others for an all inclusive holiday for couples and for those with children. If you go half board it would be very expensive for drinks etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a double room if you are going as a couple, as you will be provided with two single beds whi...

I visited the Catarina with my boyfriend at the end of June, and this was our first experience of an all inclusive holiday. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the hotel, the maids work hard all day keeping everything spotless. We found all of the staff in general to be friendly and pleasant. We were lucky enough to be allocated a room on the top floor of the main building, meaning we could get to our room relatively quickly and being on the top floor meant it was quieter. We had a lovely view of the pool and the sand dunes!

The food was good and the menu changed to an extent every day. We didn't bother much with snacks between meals, but I believe there was a limited selection of chips and pizza. Bar staff were mostly friendly and attentive, although sometimes if they hadn't heard you properly they could pull a face which could be misconstrued negatively! Others have mentioned they felt the drinks were watered down, for both soft and alcoholic, I definitely disagree with this! The alcoholic drinks were quite strong if anything, and the soft beverages I tasted were also nice.

There is a lovely pool area with plenty of sunbeds stretching out in the gardens, pond area and several terraces over looking the pool. There was a good mix of people staying when we did of various ages and nationalities, though not as many Brits.

The evening entertainment was pretty standard; the only 2 acts worth watching were the parrot show and the gymnastics show. A more thriving nightlife is only a short cab ride away however so you may want to make your own entertainment in the evening! If you like bowling, there is a place called holiday world which cost us less than 4 euros to get to.

My main issue with our stay was on the final day - our wrist bands for AI were removed at 12pm which was also the time we had to check out of our rooms. However we were not being picked up to leave until 8.40pm that evening. It was only from reading reviews prior to our trip that I knew to ask for a card to the hospitality room to leave our luggage in. I also had to mention about obtaining vouchers entitling us to lunch and dinner; I don't believe we would have received any of this if I hadn't mentioned it..! We also had to pay for drinks at the bar all day until we left that evening. In a way you do feel as though you have paid for 7 days AI but only really receive 6 days of your holiday, as we arrived at gone 11pm on our first day. There was also a problem with receiving our deposit back for the safety deposit box at the end of our stay. They did not automatically reimburse us the 10euros deposit, we had to go back to reception desk to ask for it because it slipped our mind initially that we had paid a deposit on it. The fact that they did not give us the deposit straight away, mention the hospitality room or the vouchers for lunch and dinner is the only issue that has bothered me. It would be much better if the flight times of the holiday correlated more closely with when the Catarina's AI package starts and finishes (12pm on first day until 12pm final day).

Overall though we had a lovely time and my lasting memory of the hotel is a pleasant one :)

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

We visited the Catarina in July 2012 as a group of 6. We know Playa del Inglés very well so thought we were making an educated choice staying at the Catarina. It's the first time I've gone All Inclusive in Gran Canaria despite it being my 6th visit.

**RECEPTION**
On arrival the reception had everything ready for us, we were the only guests arriving at that time of night so they were expecting us. Check-in was easy, efficient, and the staff were friendly. We arrived at midnight and previously in All Inclusive's in Egypt and Turkey they would have kept the bar/restaurant open for you to grab a drink or a snack, we didn't get this luxury. Luckily we were planning to go straight out anyway so this wasn't an issue for us.
Throughout the stay reception were helpful and friendly, just what they needed to be.

**ROOM**
The rooms at the Catarina are a generous size. Marble floor, good air conditioning, there are very few double rooms so we didn't get one like we'd requested, but we pushed the two singles together and this was ample. The beds were quite hard which I personally found okay however some of my friends did complain that they found the beds uncomfortable.
The bathroom had a shower and small bath combined, the shower was a power shower but the temperature control wasn't the best - it would blast you with boiling hot water followed by a blast of freezing cold water and so on, so keep your showers short!
Overall the room was great, certainly of a 4* standard for Spain, and is probably the best thing about the Catarina.

**CLEANLINESS**
The rooms are cleaned daily to a good standard. If you have glasses in your room that aren't empty they won't be taken away (even if they've been there for longer than a day), so if you do take any drinks back to your room and you don't want them anymore, tip them down the sink, or they'll be with you for the duration of your stay. The linen is changed twice a week and towels are changed daily.
The hotel itself is kept very clean, I saw two cockroaches during my stay but this is to be expected in Gran Canaria so I wasn't too phased by them.

**FOOD**
This is where things start to go a bit pare-shaped. We went for breakfast one morning out of the seven that we were there, this was enough. Breakfast is generally continental but they do put bacon and sausages on too. The breakfast is very greasy and not cooked to the best standard.
Lunch is served in the main restaurant and a small selection at the poolside bar. Lunch is typical All Inclusive rubbish. Your choice would typically be salad, a burger, hot dog, chicken nuggets and chips, every day, and sometimes the left overs of dinner from the night before if they can get away with it. Don't expect much variation here.
Dinner is served in the main restaurant, there'd be a large choice of salad and breads, two soups (which I didn't try because it was always some obscure option), meat that is fried fresh in front of you (varying between fish, chicken, pork, beef), pizza, meat combinations, chips, rice, and pasta. There is also a large range of desserts. The standard is OK, nothing to write home about but nothing to complaint about either.

**ALL INCLUSIVE**
1 word - dire. I can safely say I will never go All Inclusive in Gran Canaria again. In the past I've found that when going Self Catering and eating out every night the food on the island is of an excellent quality and is cheap, but the main reason for going All Inclusive this time was for the convenience of it and so that we could have a few drinks in the hotel before going out in the night as drinking out can be quite pricey.
At the pool bar you cannot get water by the bottle, it's glasses only (unless your German - they seem to take exception to that for some reason?). There is one choice of beer on draught which is okay, a variety of mixers, three cocktails which are all equally as disgusting as each other, and soft drinks by the glass. Note: If you're not drinking at a table by the poolside and you're taking your drinks to your sunlounger, make sure you ask for your drink in plastic glasses because you'll get an unfriendly telling off from the staff if you're seen to have glass at your lounger (even though they don't tell you of this in advance).
IMPORTANT: The All Inclusive program runs from 12pm on the day you arrive until 12pm on the day you leave. If your coach isn't picking you up until 9pm on your last day, you have to pay for everything at the hotel after you've checked out (except for lunch which you're given a voucher for) because they take your band off you. This is also the case if you've kept your room on until later because a late checkout is on a Room Only basis. This is the first time I've ever come across this in an "All Inclusive".

**SERVICE**
The service is nothing special. Some members of staff are nice (particularly reception), the restaurant staff are are hit and miss, the bar staff are horrendous. If you're not German, they are not interested in you or what you think, especially if your All Inclusive. This is an area that the Catarina needs to work on massively.

**ENTERTAINMENT & POOL AREA**
The pool area is nice and well maintained, the pool temperature is perfect for the time of year we went, however the hotel was reasonably quiet when we went, I wouldn't like to be there in mid-August as I can imagine it's crammed beyond.
The entertainment - well - they try their best with what they're given, but it's clear their budget is virtually nothing. I can't say I enjoyed it in the day or the night.

**LOCATION**
The location of the Catarina is pretty good. It's located next to the famous Sand Dunes so if you want to get to the beach by foot that's the best way to go, if you want to get to the main Playa del Inglés beach it's about €3 in a taxi.
Nightlife - there are lots of bars and restaurants along the road the hotel is on (Avenida de Tirajana). It's also very close to the Cita Centre and about a 15 minute walk from the Yumbo Centre. If you're wanting the Irish Centre or the Kasbah it would be a taxi ride which again would be roughly €3.

**GENERAL**
In general, my expectations of the hotel were way above what I experienced, and this was a disappointment. I wouldn't recommend the hotel unless you're going on a Room Only basis, and I certainly won't be returning myself.
I'd rate it a 3* overall, to say it's a 4* is very generous.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool facing room for a quieter stay, and close to reception to save a long walk.

Thanks for your review and large comment regarding your stay in the IFA Catarina and we are sorry that your stay wasn't what you expected.
Pointing to some of the issues, continental breakfast means coffee or tea, toated bread, ham, butter and some cereals. Our breakfast is much extended with different kind of breads, cereals, different egg plates (scrummbled, fried, omelette, boiled eggs, sausage, baked beans, bacon, some typical Spanish dishes, fresh fruit and fresh squeezed juices, vegetables, assorted cold cuts and chees as well as pastry and some diet dihes too.
We hope to welcome you at Gran Canaria and remain,
with best regards.
