Upon arrival Reception there was around 6 people waiting to be served, 2 of which had jumped the queue and decided to have a lengthy conversation with both the Receptionists with no consideration for anyone else waiting!
When the Reception staff finally acknowledged us they started to do the necessary paperwork and was then otherwise again sidetracked by a conversation with the cleaner, this got extremely frustrating.
We paid £120 euros deposit by card, I am not sure what the deposit amount is generally as we were told £150 euros when I emailed them prior to arrival, people had advised they paid different amounts so I think its just a random number, this was not an issue as we was aware that on arrival we had to pay for this.
We was given a room on the 7th floor, this was through choice as after reading many bad reviews I was not going to accept anything below the 3rd floor, The receptionist tried her hardest to try and give us a room on the 2nd floor but I wasn’t having it.
The comments are true in regards to the corridors when you go in, very gloomy and like a prison, the lift hadn’t been cleaned in years, if at all, there was dried in what looked like either blood or tomato sauce with graffiti all over it, not a great first impression I have to say, however when we arrived at our apartment it was a nice surprise.
The apartment itself was clean and had everything you needed in regards to cooking utensils etc (but we was not going to be doing any cooking!) however there was no soap, 2 towels each for 5 nights and 1 toilet roll, yes you have to buy your own once you have used the toilet rolls, this was not an issue as it was only 95 euros for 4 at the downstairs supermarkets, we did not have any dish cloths or tea towels provided either to clean up as you go, just a mop!, there is no maid service, this can be beneficial in some ways as at least you wasn’t being woken up early like we have had on previous holidays elsewhere, the downside is you have to empty your own bin in the big bins on the street!
The balcony in the apartment was very spacious and a nice way to relax with a drink before a night out, we had a great sea view from the front, also from the back we had a view of the pool and the rollercoaster at Port Adventura so couldn’t complain about that, just as we requested.
Location wise is fantastic, a few bars and shops in the immediate area but only 5 minutes from the main strip and close to the bus stop to Barcelona or Port Adventura etc.
Please be advised when walking around in general there are some very dodgy characters around and it was a bit scary at times, we was offered drugs quite openly, we just walked away, there were comments regarding muggings quite regularly taking place here so be on your guard at all times, day and night.
The pool was very nice with plenty of sunbeds to cater for the amount of guests.
We were advised by Reception that it was the St Johns Day celebrations in Salou whilst we were there and therefore fireworks will be constantly going off, this was true, 3 days continuous, day and night, all day long, this got a little bit annoying after a while.
Although we were on the top floor it was still constantly noisy, no matter what time of the day or night it was, there were people shouting in the early hours and the sound of furniture being moved all the time.
Upon check out we received our deposit back without any questions asked and overall this service was extremely quicker that the ½ hour that had been taken to check in, mainly as this was a different Receptionist and she was giving us her full attention this time, very pleasant lady and very friendly.
Places I would recommend are Murphys bar, this is located just around the corner, Emma and Benny are great hosts and there is live music if you want it, Dom from Cork was good, Sinatra’s across the road for fantastic food, The Welsh Embassy and The Victoria were also great bars, these are located around the corner and just down the road from Murphys.
We went to Port Adventura, the park is very nice but a few handy tips, get your tickets beforehand from the ticket agents across the road and also check that the schools are not off or end of term as it was rammed because of this when we went, therefore it spoilt it, in the 9 hours we was there we only got on 2 rides because of constant queing for hours at a cost of £40.00 each, expensive day and felt ripped off.
I would also recommend the house of illusions show, this is an all inclusive night out, and there is either an early show at 6:30 which includes food or the later show without food that starts at 9:30.
The show is fantastic and if you upgrade to VIP for 5 euros each it is so worth it, you get champagne and also involved with the acts, which is hilarious.
The staff are very friendly, as are the magicians, very talented guys that will keep you mesmerised for hours.
After the show you get the chance to meet them and have photographs taken.
Also a trip to Chaplins is a must, they have some great shows on, my personal favourite was the hypnotist on Monday evenings, Rodney James Piper, hilarious with of course the Gay John song! I still can’t stop singing it! The staff are really friendly, particularly Carla who we got to know quite well, so lovely.
Chrissies Irish Bar also a great bar with entertainment and a great atmosphere, again great staff, this is located a few doors down from Chaplins.
We generally had a great time but if we were to go back to Salou again we would not stay at the Mariposa as there are better hotels around the area, Hotel Ora Park and Playa Park as well as the Mediterranean or the Santa Monica, opposite Chaplins, just off the strip.
