“A pleasant enough hotel. Not sure I would fancy it during peak season.”
Reviewed September 26, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at the Golden Avenida with our 19 month old son for a week mid September. We opted to go room only although it was sold as self catering. We found that it wad cheaper to pay for evening meals rather than go all inclusive. Evening meals were 12.50 euros per adult plus drink. The catering facilities in the rooms are very limited and apparently out with the remit of cleaning staff. The hotel itself was great and the pool was ideal for kids. If your looking for a quiet week by the pool then don't choose a family resort hotel.

Our only real gripe during the week was about Thomson reps. The entertainment staff were great however the reps were useless. We asked about their Barcelona trip and whether it would be suitable for our son (remember only 19 months). The rep assured us that it was suitable however was clearly only interested in making her commission as having a toddler on a bus for 5 hours is not fun.

I would go back to Salou but not sure I would use Thomsons.

Stayed All Inclusive through Thomson from 15th September for 10 Nights.
FLIGHTS.... out and back were without problem and the staff were very helpful at both Manchester and Reus, my wife was using walking sticks having recently had a hip operation and although we didn't request preferential treatment, we were offered it by the Thomson reps.
TRANSFERS...... on the Thomson coaches were quick and efficient, the coaches are air conditioned and the communication at the airport and hotel in Salou was first class.
ACCOMODATION.....our room was on the 5th floor overlooking the pool area (507) and we had a suite which had a double bed and a seperate room with 2 single beds even though there were 2 of us. There is a fridge, microwave, small sink and hairdryer in each room and a large LCD TV which had about 10 english speaking channels for those who like to keep up with news from the UK. These included ITV, BBC2, BBC3, More4, CBBC and Sky Sports, but strangely not BBC1 for some reason. The small bedroom also had a smaller LCD TV in with the same channels.
We weren't necessarily interested in watching the box but I know some will like this facility and as I say it's good for obtaining news on a regular basis and for the kids of an evening perhaps?
The bathroom was excellent, good shower, plenty of hot water, recently renovated by the look of it and when we asked for a couple more towels this was not a problem. Towels are changed when you leave them on the floor. Each room has it's own balcony with usual table and chairs and an area for drying towels, swimming costumes etc. The only downside was that the beds were pretty hard and this did make for some restless sleeping on a couple of nights, but not everyone prefers a soft bed so each to their own.
RESTAURANT..... was excellent overall, the service from Ana and her staff was very very good and the food was plentiful. Some other reviewers have alluded to the food being repetitive and I have some agreement with this, but with a little imagination you could mix and match to make up a decent, tasty meal. The salads were excellent, as were the sweets, there is always chicken, pork and fish in various guises, beef was also available in thin steaks and as a roast on Sunday, vegetables tended to be a bit overcooked but thats being picky really, there was always rice and pasta, so it was always possible to mix and match lunch and evening. Breakfasts gave a wide choice of cereals, continental fare and english. The kids were even catered for by having their own small food bar and flavoured milks and yoghurts. There was always fruit available. AI drinks allowed wine and beer at the table as well as soft drinks etc.
BAR.....Juan, David, Maissa, Saar and the rest of the bar staff kept up with demand all day and evening and there was a good choice of own brand spirits and local cruzcampo beer for AI customers as well as coffee, tea etc. If you were paying for your drinks there was a full range of branded spirits, a further variety of beers and Guinness on tap for those who wanted it. The bar also had crisps, ice creams and bar snacks available most of the day.
POOL AREAS....there's a seperate kiddies pool up a flight of stairs and on a deck area and also the main pool is split into two section either side of a small bridge. One side going gradually from 0 to about 1.25m and the other from 1.25m to about 1.6m. there are several ladders to climb in/out around the pool and there is a lifeguard on duty from10.00 to 18.00 each day.
Theres also a small waterslide area just for toddlers and smaller children. At the back end of the pools theres a 5 a side football pitch and a playpark and added to this there's a softtoy/creche area and indoor pool in the basemant of the hotel.
ENTERTAINMENT......during our stay there were several professional acts on in the bar, most notably a Soul/Tamla music act and Beijing Acrobats which were both very good, and the Thomson reps provided kids entertainment each evening up to about 9.30 after which the adults were catered for. Poolside and day entertainment was varied and never "in your face" and you could join in or not as you wished.
THOMSON STAFF... have to say the reps were fantasic, worked thier socks off every day and evening and were a credit to Thomson for keeping us all entertained, informed and helped throughout. Whatever they're paid, it's not enough.
HOTEL STAFF.... similarly excellent, nothing too much trouble and always happy to give advice or assistance.
SALOU..... is a very nice place, with a lovely beach and the Aventura Park close by. Barcelona is within easy reach as are plenty of other places of interest and we found Cambrils lovely, so no need to be stuck in the hotel every day! Try out the tourist train, the TRENET, for €3 it's abargain way to get around Salou and the immediate area.
ALL IN ALL....a really good family hotel, no surprise it's got such good reviews, and ratings. We went as a late booking and as a 50'ish couple weren't totally sure we'd made the right choice, but we enjoyed ourselves and wouldn't hesitate recommending Thomsons and this Hotel if you have kids to take abroad.

Room Tip: Overlooking Pool and higher up are quiet.

We have just returned from 1 week in the Avenida suites hotel.
We have to say it was a superb, but some things to tell you about. In the thomson website it states its 4 stars, when in fact the hotel is only 3 stars but it lives up to 4 stars very easily.
we arrived by transer from reus aiport with my wife and 21 month old boy.(advice do not use the thomson bus took us 1 hour, we got a taxi from hote to airport 15 minutes 30 euro but well worth it)
we was greeted and told about the hotel and given our room 101, we had asked before we wanted a roon overlooking the toddler pool and we got it.
the room was a nice size, a sofa, flat screen tv, double bed, fridge, microwave, kettle, bathroom with bath and over shower, toilet and sink. bedroom with twin beds (can push together) loads of space for clothes.
so we was impressed by the room, we went down stairs to the restaurant, and again well impressed from the start, greeted by Ana who told us what we get on all inclusive, went to a table and was asked for what drinks we wanted. then off to the hot and cold counter with a vast choice of salads, cold meats, cheeses. hot choices always a fish pan cooked and meat pan cooked in front of you, plus a carved meat, then mass choices of meat and fish dishes, chips and and potatoes, vegetables, 2 soups, a kids corner. loads of cold sweets. so plenty of choice for everybody and this did not change the whole week, i am a chef and have to say its the best all inclusive food i have seen a spain hotel.
after stuffing our faces off to the bar, with a good choice of drinks, my wife drinks cider and you have to pay extra for strongbow, but for 70 cents a 1/2 you cant complain.
the entertainments thomson team was great and my boy loved it.
there is a bit of a games room with car racing, shooting games, in the main bar 2 pool tables, 4 computers, also there is a wifi zone for free wifi.
we had travelled so an early night for all of us, now this was the only bad point of the hotel the mattress was too hard for me and my wife but might be o.k for other people.
the next morning down for breakfast, yet again a superb choice.
then it was a look around the place, there is a big pool, a splash pool, then up some stairs to a toddler pool which is great and quiet.
there is 2 kids play areas, 1 for the little ones, and 1 for the bigger kids, table tennis tables, football pich and crazy golf.
there is a kids club, and soft play area for the little ones, a creche which we used once and our little fell loved it and for 11 euros well worth it, also a indoor swimming pool, a laundry.
the hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the beach and shops.
we will be returning and loved it, thomson reps was great and not in your face.

Room Tip: we had 101 and if you have a toddler its perfect, as you nip over the wall to the pool, and can shil...

Just returned from a great week in Salou I'm 69 & Wife is 62 so we were not sure what to expect being a family hotel .But .Hotel was great and food was excellent ( we went all Inc.) Great choice of food every day. The Bar staff were fantastic and all the Thomson reps and the receptionsist's were very helpfull. Cleaners changed towels every day even when not requested and bedsheets changed once a week...There was even a kettle with 4 cups ans sucers + a micro wave in the room.....It would be nice to come here with all the family and grandchildren at some time in the future..........
However I was discusted with 4 of the British guests, they put towels on 8 sun beds at different postions around the pool at a time ( just so the selfish so & so's could move round with the Sun) . But there we alway beds available futher back from pool side.

Room Tip: Try and get a room over the pool, Sun on these for most of the day and no noise late at night

We stayed here end of August and cannot rate it high enough. My children aged 14, 9 and 21 months all loved it. There was something for all of them to do and the selection of food at meal times meant they were all satisfied. The staff were so friendly and helpful they made our stay so enjoyable and the reps were great at getting everybody involved. The kids loved all the reps and the youngest absolutely loved thomson the dog TTD loved this holiday so much looking for next year if your going to Salou with children you can't beat this hotel. if you stay here or in Salou make sure you go to Rooneys the bar just down the side round you can't beat it for a friendly atmosphere and the best stir fry it also has a free xbox if the kids want to play whilst you watch the footy on the big screen.

We have just returned from a lovely week staying at the Golden Avenida Suites in Salou, what a lovely place this is, our suite was lovely apart from being very noisy, a strange buzzing noise day and night, couldnt sleep the first night and did ask to be moved but were told nothing available, we just went to the chemist and bought some ear plugs, they worked a treat, but would defo request a higher floor next time room 123 was a nightmare. The food in the hotel was lovely, well presented and always plenty of variety, also lovely and clean as was all of the hotel. We were all inclusive, drinks were okay and you could pay a small amount extra and have branded drinks which I think was a brill idea, only problem I had was they appeared to ignore me at the bar, but that maybe is because Im not forceful enough, I mentioned it to a friend we met there and when I went to the bar with her she could not believe it as they served her straight away and left me standing there, but what the heck got served eventually. My only other gripe and not really a big one was the fact that if you missed lunch which was 1pm- 2.15pm you could not get a snack until after 4pm, I was not aware of this the first time and went to ask at reception where a snack could be obtained, the answer I got was that " we are not in the carribean" which I answered that I had been all inclusive almost every time I have been abroad and have always been able to get a snack in between meal sittings, We just went up into town and bought a snack, no great problem for us but could be for people on a tight budget. We went on a day trip downhill mountain biking, what a great afternoon we had, well worth doing. We also managed to get tickets to see FC Barcelona in the champions league on the wednesday night, that was absolutely fab, apart from being a bit too close to the barmy russian supporters who were also sat behind us, but luckily they were outnumbered. It was a late one getting back didnt get back till 2am but a once in a lifetime expierience. The entertainment staff and all of the thomson reps were brill, the entertainment left a lot to be desired but seeing as it is a family resort, it did cater for kids very well, still enjoyed it though. The pool area is very nice and it has a lovely play area for kids, all closed off and very safe, plus I believe they have a creche facility available for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The only downside to this holiday is we have just arrived back in manchester and low and behold they have lost my hubbys case, which had all the pressies in and 3 new Barcelona shirts and our new liverpool shirts, got keep everything crossed that we get it back.

Room Tip: Ensure you get a higher floor as lower floor was quite noisy.
