“not family orientated at all!”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

Arrived at thehotel on the 28th of may for two weeks, greeted at reception by a huge queue of people complaining about the rooms! Thought cant be that bad, but how wrong was I, there was 7 of us and including a 3 year old child and this hotel is awful for young children! Two rooms were ready and the third was not ready for a further 6 hours! One member of our party had a nose bleed and there was blood in the room and on the towels for a week, despite constant complaints to reception! Advised rep and they were reluctant to let us make an official complaint! Grouo of very loud and drunk rugby team and loads of spanish teenagers gpoing to the theme park! Dead cockroaches in the kitchen and miserable bar staff, not all I might add, met some nice people as all most people did when they were at the bar was moan bout the hotel, common ground! One couple we met changed rooms as when they arrived with there young child they were greeted with two white tablets on the bed! It became a joje the cleanliness of the hotel so much so a guest placed a cola haribo sweet above the 2nd floor lift in calypso one and it was still there when we left and i bet is still there now.Salou itself is okay as long as ur kids are not toddlers! I will never go back to this hotel again even if it was for free! On a plus point shows were really good,

Room Tip: Second swimming pool is quieter and better for young children! Ask to be in calyoso two as calypso o...

My husband & I have just returned from 11nights all inclusive & had a fab time. It isn't luxury but a good 3*.. housekeeping staff work hard to keep it clean. Our room was cleaned daily, even if we wanted a long lie it was cleaned & fresh towels provided later in the day (don't worry about missing breakfast if you fancy a lie in, theres plenty food available at the alfresco snack bar:- bacon rolls, toasties, toast with jam/marmalade, burgers, hot dogs, fresh fruit, yoghurts etc hot/cold drink machines). Theres also ample choices in the main restaurant, with themed nights where the restaurant staff dress in costumes to suit the theme (Chinese, Indian etc). We found the staff throughout the hotel to be friendly & helpful. We mostly enjoyed the evening shows put on by the best entertainment team we have came across on our many holidays (Mama Mia, Dirty Dancing, Hollywood Lights, Grease etc). The entertainers work hard throughout the day with games around the pool & keeping the kids entertained. We didn't go in the pool by choice but other guests used it regularly (a shocked look on their faces on entry but their bodies seemed to adjust to the temp after a min or 2). All in all we enjoyed our holiday here & plan on returning. Go with a positive outlook, remember its 3* not 5* & you'll hopefully enjoy it as much as we did

Room Tip: theres little trains that take you around Salou/Portaventura/Water Park/Cap Salou/La Pineda which st...

This hotel does not accommodate babies in any way and all hotel staff support this without excuse. Absolutely no baby change anywhere, not even baby change mats. I was directed to change baby on the toilet floor which wasn't clean. Huge hotel but it was very dirty and dingy.
Obtaining hot water and sterilising bottles was a mare. Microwaves weren't always available, and on a number of occasions they were simply out of order. The staff couldn't confirm that the water from the coffee machines was safe for English tummies. Using the coffee machines or the machines behind the bar is the only way to get boiled water as the microwaves didn't always work. Our baby had diahorrea throughout the entire stay. The staff weren't willing to say whether or not the machines or their Barista used Brit friendly water. NOT ALLOWED A KETTLE IN ROOM to boil own bottles water as it trips the hotel.
The rooms were in real disrepair. Chunks out of walls, marks and wires hanging out. Hotel exterior covered in rust streams. Couldn't find jacuzzi or whirlpool and air con wasn't turned on until July.
The food was horrendous. Raw (clearly uncooked- chef didn't care) chicken served to us 3 times in 4 days. We were in a large party with children and toddlers and felt that the food was so poor it was not safe. We spent 800 euros on eating out. The chicken nuggets had grit in them and tasted like pooh. Yoghurt a were warm, birds ate at the bread for breakfast and lunch. Hotel was a mess.
Position quite good. Just off a rough street and a short walk to Main Street. Often glass on the floor so had to be careful with the kids at night time.

We spent last week at the Calypso and found it clean and tidy with pleasant and helpful staff. The food was good with a nice choice. The rooms were basic, but kept clean and tidy. The only draw back is the pool is freezing even though it was getting 10 hours of sun a day on it, but there is a very nice beach 15 minutes walk up the hill. Great location for the adventure park too. Taxi 7.50 euro. Would go back.

Room Tip: We stopped in the 2nd part overlooking the children`s and we slept ok.

Overall this hotel was ok. The room was nice except for the air conditioning which didn't work. There was a decent selection of cocktails available on the all inclusive package however they were all pretty horrible! My main problem was with the food. Breakfast was fine, the usual really, but dinner wasn't very nice at all and there wasn't a wide selection of food. So we were left with going out to eat, which cost more money, or living on chips and pizza from the snack area which does get boring after a while! The staff were very friendly and the service from them was good. So I wouldn't go to this hotel again but it wasn't too bad if you can get a cheap deal.

Before I went to this hotel 18-25th May 2013, I read quite a few reviews and must admit that some of the views could put people off of going but I decided to judge for myself. I stayed in Calypso 1 room 528 and although the furniture was a little dated the room itself was very clean.Maidservice was very good with towels being changed when you left dirty ones in bath or on floor, she was very pleasant and always had a smile for you.Food- yes it was always cold but there are microwaves in the Restaurant for you to warm up if needed. Variety could be improved on but having said that we were always able to find something we liked. The outside gril was very good and both my husband and myself ate out there every day and thoroughly enjoyed the variety that they had there. Bars were also very good didn't have to wait too long to be served once again staff very pleasant (especially lady called Engana who always gave everyone a lovely smile and was as fresh at the end of the night as she was at the beginning)She is an asset to this hotel. I wouldn't go back there again but only because there were too many very young babies and children there. Also this hotel pays host to school parties. I have read some bad reviews re these school parties so would suggest you ask to be put in Calypso 1, although I didn't see them causing any trouble while I was there. I have seen an unhappy report from someone who was there the same week as us and were in Calypso 2, which is where the school children are put. So perhaps again ask for Calypso 1. Entertainment was good and especially if you had young children as they catered a lot for them. This is the only reason I would not return to this hotel- I knew before I went that it was a family hotel, but was not expecting this amount of children (seemed like hundreds of them)-slight exageration. All in all if you want 5 star and child free- then this is not for you. Otherwise give it a try.

Room Tip: Had a road facing room- could be a little noisy when coaches pulled up and left their engines runnin...
