“excellent value for money (if you get a cheap deal)”
Reviewed September 30, 2010

Me and my girlfriend have just returned from the california palace hotel and had a great holiday there. We got a cheap last minute deal and were worried that the hotel might not be very good but we were pleasantly surprised! The hotel is quite modern in its appearance and is very clean. The staff are brilliant and very helpful. The rooms are spacious, nice big clean bathroom.....all the rooms have balcony's which is great. only downside was the beds - we had 2 single beds pushed together to make a double and they weren't very comfy at all. The tv was a bit old but we didn't spend much time sat in the hotel room watching the box.....we were on the beach, so it didn't bother us.

as for the location, it was ideal for us. the hotel is about 10mins walk from the beach and is in a quiet residential area surrounded by a few bars and shops. the 2 bars directly opposite the hotel are great for a quick pint before heading into the town as they do cheap drinks. 1 euro 50 for a pint and 1 euro for a sangria...bargain! we didn't drink at the bar in the hotel as we heard it was quite expensive. the entertainment looked pretty poor in the bar area but we're not one's for staying in the hotel all night so it didn't matter to us. the far end of the beach, where the main bars and restaurants are located is quite tacky so we were very glad our hotel was at the other end of the beach!

the hotel has a small spa area in the basement which we used a couple of times as it was only around 4 euros for half a day. it has a steam room, a jacuzzi and a sort of hydrotherapy pool. the outdoor pool was fine....not too big but hardly anyone went in it so i had the pool to myself most afternoons.

the restaurant was brilliant....the food was very good and the waiters were very efficient. the chap managing the restaurant was a top bloke. we were half board so had breakfast and evening meal....the food did get a bit samey towards the end of the week but there was always something nice from the selection so we never went hungry!

so, to sum it up.....if you're someone who is looking for the nightlife and wants to be near to the bars etc then this hotel isn't for you. if you're someone who likes entertainment at the hotel, then this place isn't for you. if you're looking for a nice hotel, in a quiet area, a short walk from the beach....then this hotel is excellent (if you get a good last minute deal!). The only thing that could have made my stay more enjoyable was a more comfortable bed....other than that, I had a great time!

We have just returned from this hotel and whilst it is nice enough it is not 4 star. We had a room on the corner which we found small compared to other 4 star and the balcony was so small it was a waste of space. The good points we found was the staff very helpful, we enjoyed the food and the service in the dining room, the pool was generally quiet as there was not many British at the hotel (no mad rush for the beds!!!!) and you got a sunbed no problem. The bad point about the pool is that the sun only starts to hit a little corner of the pool area around 9.30. Another bad point is the location, it being quite a way from the centre of things like the bars and the shops. As in previous report, walking back late at night could be a bit scary if you wandered off the main drag and went the back roads. There is a couple of bars close by which we enjoyed a pint in but not much in the way of entertainment. We enjoyed Salou but will definately be looking for a hotel at least 20 minutes nearer the centre.

The California is a nice clean hotel , we where half board the food was very good a good choice the head waiter was a scouser and looked after you very well and fussed around all the guests many of the guests where spanish and portugese . The only downside was the bar prices a pint was 3.50 euros and a bottle of wine 11 euros but there was a bar across the road the montreal a pint was 1.50 and spirits 2.00 excellent the main bars in the area charged 2.00 euros if you fancy a day out Barcelona on the train 2 mins down the road was 12 euros return it took 1.5 hrs a nice day out Tarragona market on the bus 2.60 euros for the fri market

If you want to be far away from all the atmosphere, half an hour walk min to the buzz of the good bars and night life and from the good tourist shoppinh stall then this hotel might be for you... This was noth what i wanted for my holiday though. It is a very quiet area where I wouldn't walk home on own at night or even as a couple. I met a few people who were mugged on the quiet streets during the week I was there. This isn't so much of an issue in the bussier areas.

The "double room" we booked was 2 single beds - there goes the romance!
The fridge in the room you had to pay to use-they are locked until you hand over money!
The towels were changed everyday and the beds drerssed - but there was no "cleaning" as such - the bath/shower, the mirror, aound the sink, the table area in the room - none of which were cleaning during the week.
The 2 male receptionsists were very helpful, give you tips, book taxis or anything else you wanted booked. There was also a lady working on reception who was very ignorrant and very unhelpful. Wouldn't help us book a show or make call for us etc., quiet disappointing.
The best thing and good point about the hotel was good air conditioning.
The Hotel itself to look at is a nice hotel, but it is not for dpeopls who are going on holidays to have some fun and it is by no means anyway lively. I won't be returing!!

We got a last minute holiday to Salou, so found this hotel to be a great bargain. The service of the staff was excellent, they were always there to help and if they couldn't they would find someone who could help you. All reception staff were fluent in english, however cleaning staff were not. We were half board and the food was excellent, with a lot of local food. The hotel did cater for a lot of families so is not recomended for a quite holiday. The hotel is around 10 minutes from the beach and very close to the local shops and Salou train station, so a great location. There was a cafe/ bar called cappucino located a few streets away which served they best cocktails i've ever had.
I would certainly stay at this hotel again and recomend it to anyone.

Not a bad hotel but not as good as most 4 star establishments I have used.
Rooms: Good air con, cleaned daily , safe is an extortionate 20 euros for a week, I expect a free digi safe in a 4 star hotel. TV was via an antique probably 12 inch portable. Fridge in room is a welcome plus.
Pool was ok, but expect shade for for most of the areas untilll afternoon. Pool area suffered from a lack of care, with dirty floor tiles and filthy beds the norm.
Dining area is good and most meals were to a high standard with good variety.
Public areas are this hotels strong-point, lobby and lifts are spotlessy clean and stylish.
Hotel location is good, being a pleasant 10 minute stroll to Salou's excellent beaches and 30 mins walk to the centre of town, where we wished to avoid staying. Our room overlooked the side street and suffered from no noise from outside. However noise insullation from corridors and other rooms is extremely poor in this hotel.
Hotel entertainment was low key but staff work hard and are welcoming.
Apart from being shouted at by the cook ( imagine this at a marriott) when i didnt understand the toaster rules, all staff were polite and courtious.
Overall this hotel provided a pleasant base for an enjoyable holiday. I would just about recommend. With a cleaner pool area i would have awarded 4 stars.

This was our second visit to this hotel and certainly justified it. The room was very clean, big enough for three and with a decent bathroom. As we were off season, there was plenty of room in the dining room and the grub was fine. A bottle of wine costing 5-6 euros in a supermarket was 11 euros, which I thought was not bad.
A big plus for us was the 5 min stroll to the station and easy access to Barcelona and Tarragona at roughly half the price of the bus and minus the tours of the back streets of the resorts.
The hotel is in a quiet part of Salou but is convenient for the esplanade and the attractive seafront walk to Cambrils. This is about 4 miles and the bus fare back is 1.3 euros although walking back is reasonably feasible even if you're not particularly fit.
You will see many offers to the magic fountains in Barcelona at 20 odd euros but we found that the fountains displays on Salou esplanade were excellent, free and a lot less hassle.
We've visited a number of costa resorts and have found Salou to be at least equal to the best and the area around this hotel to be the most pleasant in Salou.
Avoid the Cheers Bar opposite the hotel. Despite the England banners and the name, it's Spanish and the service was appalling.
Like all o the euro zone, costs have rocketed with the decline in the pound. Most things are now at least a third dearer. In fact, we found the same spanish wine cheaper in our local Tesco.
Some correspondents have moaned about the head waiter. Like the rest of the staff, we found him very pleasant.
All in all, we would highly recommend this hotel and resort. For Scottish and north of England residents, Globespan offer the best value and you will often find that 9 nights are cheaper than seven. It is good that Globespan have returned to a spreadsheet format that is easier to work out the best combination of flight and hotel,
