There were 15 people in our party ranging from 9 years old to 70 and we all enjoyed our stay at the Best Negresco. Check in was quick and easy and most of us were in our rooms within 15 mins of arrival. One family in our party had to wait for their room to be ready (about an hour) but there are is plenty of room to leave your cases and get changed if you wish. The hotel is right on the sea front with beaches to the left and right all in easy walking access (though there are a few steps down to the beach)
Our rooms were all similar - two double beds, TV, fridge and bathroom (bidet, toilet, sink, bath/shower and hair dryer). Complimentary shampoo, toothbrushes, razors etc.., are also provided. I would have like a small dividing wall between the two beds as we had two adults and two older (smelly, noisy) children in with us. We had a small balcony and good see the sea to the left of us. There is a safety deposit box for 30 euros (we didnt use it so not sure of that is refundable or not)
All Inclusive - This starts at 12 o'clock on the day of arrival and finishes the same time on departure. There is a large restaurant and the staff are very efficient in keeping everything stocked up. You get bottled wine, beer with your meal. We had no complaints with the food, there is a 'specials' table which changes daily - things like hog roast, sea food, Mexican. The other tables are always similar (salad, meats, hot food & vegetables) There is a hot grill where a chef (who doesn't smile or speak) cooks meats and fish to order - you queue for this as its not quick. You also queue for coffee due to people not knowing how to use the machines (which are all different). You like me will soon become a coffee expert and I opted for the 3 press two cups option to get two decent sized cups of coffee!
The bar - if you are all inclusive then there is a queuing system to get drinks if not then you receive priority waiter service. None of us really had a problem with this though. The entertainment in the hotel is what you would expect - not my cup of tea but nothing specifically wrong with it (apart from Spanish Bingo!)
The Pool - The day starts off with your sun lounger strategy - get your towels on. Yes i'm afraid you need to get a towel on your sunbed before 10:00 am. The pool gets the sun late morning then all the way until it sets behind the mountains. You will be entertained by whatever music the life guard wants to play and at what volume. Sometimes nice Spanish relaxing music - sometimes Euro Techno! No ball games or inflatables though feel free to buy your kids the foam water pistols and wet everyone, which is not annoying at all. There is a pool bar open from 10 to 6 and you can get food also (usually only one member of staff who has to cook, clean and serve - so more queuing (again not massive)
The staff - all of them brilliant - i must say they are all happy and helpful (apart from the chef behind the grill who has no facial expression - he may be a robot)
Free wifi - Yes free wifi in reception, the bar and pool (room if you are lucky)
The restort - Cap Salou - not a great deal going on here but you can walk to Salou either via the coastal paths or the roads - it takes around 30 mins and Salou is very nice.
Outside the hotel (up the road) there are two bus stops - one direction takes you to Salou and Cambrils - the other Reus and Taragona 2 euros each and about 20 mins) You can also get a bus to Barcelona (20 euros return and it takes 2.5 hours) You can also walk (or get a bus) to aquopolis (water park with dolphin show) Very Good!
The Beach - next to the hotel is a beach (you can see from the pool) there are banana boats (6 euros each), paragliding (100 euros), pedalo's (12 euros), jet skis (50 euros). Some beaches also do sunbeds (around 6 euros) - we bought some chairs from a supermarket for 15 euros. If you go to Cambrils there is platform out in the sea with slides. The seas can be a bit 'wavy' .
In summary a nice family hotel which shuts down around midnight - its quite at night (i never heard anything) and has a good mix of nationalities. Its in a great location and the staff are excellent and the food was nice, Would we go again - yes i wouldn't mind it had everything we needed but we were a large group of adults and children and it is a family hotel.

Dear Michael
It is a pleasure for us knowing that you, your family and friends have enjoyed your stay with us and that you want to visit us again. I am assuming from your article that you must be a travel writer! There is so much detail about every aspect of the hotel and locality. Thank you so much for taking the time to put all your experiences down in writing
On behalf of all the hotel team and myself, many thanks for your kind words.

We hope to see you soon the next year!!

I stayed at this hotel for a week with my partner (both in our thirties). We have stayed in the centre of Salou twice before at the Europa Park and Golden Port Salou Park. Salou itself if a bit dingy and nothing special so we chose the Best Negresco on the basis of it being in Cap Salou.

I've listed the postives and negatives to this hotel

Positives:
Great food - always a wide variety of choice. I'm veggie and always managed to cobble a meal together.

Great Location - Set alone on the beach with fantastic views. There are three small beaches which are immaculate and the water was warm and clear. Probably one of the best spanish beaches you will find. We walked into Salou and it took about 15/20 mins. Follow the coast line and use the stairs at the end of the beach and this takes you to the outskirts of Salou.

Cleanliness - Our room was cleaned every day and towels replaced etc. The cleaner did a really thorough job and was lovely. Always taking the time to say Hola with a smile on her face. The hotel and the grounds were always really clean.

Negatives:
Rooms - these are quite small and the walls are paper thin. We could hear conversations from next door and a guy who snored all night! You couldnt sit on the toilet properly as there was a wall that jutted out infront of it. The wardrobe doors were on rollers and you couldnt open or close them properly. The beds are rock hard and uncomfortable.

Staff - I would never visit a foreign country and expect everyone to speak English, however when you visit the Med on a regular basis you do get used to this being the case and maybe we have been spoilt. However at the Best Negresco we struggled to communicate in English with the staff on the pool bar, reception and in the restaurant. My partner is allergic to nuts and trying to ask staff what was in the food was really difficult. If we had of known this it would have been easy enough to brush up on a bit of Spanish but like I say I suppose you do come to assume it, probably wrongly. i had emailed the hotel before travelling to ask them whether this would be a problem and they never replied.

Other guests - There are lots of Russian and Spanish guests at the hotel and we noticed a distinct lack of manners. It seems only the English people queued and used manners. We also noticed that the receptionists would favour the Russian guests. Having stood in a queue for about 10 mins a Russian guest who was obviously behind me was spoken to first.

On the whole this is a good hotel, mainly because of it's location, but definitely not worth it's 4 stars. Would i return? Probably not, there are much nicer hotels without these issues for the same money.

Stayed here in a large group from 30th july-13th Aug, hotel was excellent, so clean and modern, rooms were well equipped and were always spotless, the only complaint we had was the food, there was a great selection however it was mostly to suit all the foreign guests (russian & spanish) and we struggled to find things the kids in are party would eat, are 1st few days some of the staff came across as very rude however as are stay went on they became very friendly and laughed and joked with the kids etc, the kidsclub reps where also very nice, the evenin entertainment was not great with things repeated often, the location was ok and not to far a walk into salou or cap salou, if food was to change would defo return!!

We returned to the UK yesterday. We had an amazing family holiday with friends, and wouldn't hesitate in returning.
The Hotel position is stunning and you wouldn't tire of the sea views which you see every morning on your way down to breakfast.
Reception Staff couldn't do enough to help you, Restaurant and Bar staff work very hard all day long with a huge amount of food choices at every sitting. Hotel is very clean, and hotel rooms are cleaned and beds made everyday. We had a room for 2 adults and 2 children and it was a little small but had everything we needed and to be honest we didn't spend that much time in there anyway. Salou is about a half an hour walk into along the coast which was a nice walk day or night, a taxi for 8 of us cost 11 Euros.
Bar closed at 11.30 and lights were switched off around 12.15am but we still enjoyed chatting as doors didnt close.
Wifi available in hotel and by the pool, themed food nights which was nice.
Overall couldn't speak highly enough of this hotel, we I wish that we had booked for more then a week.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea room if poss - views are stunning

What a fantastic relaxing holiday we have just had at the Best Negresco, so much so we have already looked at re booking for next year.
From the moment you walk into reception and see how spacious and clean it is you know you are going to enjoy your stay, the views from the rear of reception through the 2 storey all glass viewing wall is simply stunning.
The hotel rooms have either 2 double beds or 1 double and 2 single beds, a small under counter fridge contains complimentary juice and water which is something I have never had before. The air conditioning is a little dated and makes a constant drone but you can put up with this if it keeps the room cool in 32 degree heat.
The bathroom is a good size with shower over bath and a bidet, the only problem being the toilet is very close to the shower closet wall and you can't sit on the toilet seat as you are meant too and so have to adopt a side saddle squat.(swapping the bidet and toilet around would sort this minor problem.) There is a complimentary bathroom pack which consisted of combs, razors, toothbrushes, shower gel, shampoo, shoe shine etc which was topped up when required.
The restaurant was very large and very busy but the staff work extremely hard to keep things turning over, special note here is when entering the restaurant stay middle to bottom left for seating where Gerard, Antonio, Ischmael & Reyes were excellent and attentive.
The food was also excellent and the choice is far to great to mention but a few points from cava and fresh fruit smoothies made for your breakfast to the special themed nights where the cuisine came from Mexico, Spain, Catalan and even a British night all of which were excellent. Special mention must go to the chef who operates the grill and will cook you from fresh Chicken, Steak, Pork , Fish and Burgers and Hot dogs for the kids, altogether a very good dining experience.
The pool bar was open from 10am till 6pm on the button and for the all inclusive had a very good choice of drinks, food and ice creams. The staff hare were also very good and made the kids very welcome and even learned them some Spanish words while they were up getting their orders. Special mentions here must be for Aleena, Jana and Maria who the kids liked so much they bought them gifts for the last night.
The Main bar was open from 6pm till 11.30 pm and was staffed by the same pool bar staff, again named drinks were the order for the all inclusive customer which again is very rare ( Smirnoff, Absolut, Bacardi, Baileys etc)
The entertainment was hot and cold but when it was good, it was very good, the Magician the Flamenco and the Acrobats were all very good where as the quiz and bingo were not very good. The only other gripe was the kids club disco which was the same songs every night and this became extremely annoying.
The position of the hotel on a rocky outcrop is quite stunning and the glass screening around the pool terrace allows you to watch the constant stream of yachts, cruisers and other craft who come from Salou and Cambrills to moor of the hotels rock for sunbathing and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters.
A few steps down from the poolside and you are on the start of the beach which stretches along towards Salou where you can rent boats, pedalos, sun beds and sun huts.
A regular bus service passes at the top of the road from the hotel taking you to all destinations on the Costa Dorada.
Altogether a fantastic holiday where everyone is lovely and friendly from the maids, to bar staff and reception staff.
A definite return from us next year where we will book a sea view room this year so we can enjoy the stunning views on offer.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room, you won't be disapointed
