“short break”
Reviewed November 29, 2012

Booked a 4 day short break for £110 full board, read the reviews, and seemed fine.
We got the Plana bus from airport, bit fiddly to find hotel after getting off bus, but got there.
Booked in quickly, rooms very clean & spacious, alot of wardrobe & drawer space, balcony. Small fridge, handy for water, wine etc.
The rooms were cleaned each day, and towels replenished if needed, which we hadn't expected on a short break.
Went down for lunch, very impressed with the variety, as only lunchtime. Food was good, I think you have to be very fussy not to find something to eat, ranged from salads, hot meals, desserts, bread rolls. And as we had only paid £36 a night full board, so were more then happy, same said for dinner, and breakfast. There were the occassional queues, but staff seemed to move people along quickly. Water was quite expensive in restaurant, but wine started at 10 euro's, which was good value.
Didn't use the pool, spa etc, as was only open limited hours, whilst we were there.
Largely spanish clientle, which is encouraging.
Entertainment was only on Saturday night, and the small bar area was packed, only 1 barman on,who struggled to cope. But rest of time, bar area was quiet. They had tv, but mainly football, which my boyfriend enjoyed.
There was a lot of noise from about 7am each morning, as seemed to be a lot of kids there, but we didn't get disturbed on a night.
Walk to seafront was about 15mins, very easy to find. Very little open, had expected it to be quiet, but not that quiet. Still, lovely prom, beach area, plenty of walking. We caught the Plana bus to Cambrils, nice resort too.
Port Aventura is about a 10-15min walk also.
Very good, and cheap deal, and enjoyed our stay, an Salou.

This hotel looks very good on paper and having read other reviews decided to give it a go, however, we were very disappointed with the hotel.
The rooms are modern with fridge and hair dryer, the bathrooms are large and clean. However, the noise from within the hotel is really bad, we were on the top floor and found it difficult to get any sleep at night due to the noise travelling along the corridors from other guests. As we as this you could clearly hear every word that the people in the rooms next door were saying (and i don't think they were talking any louder than average - we had at least 2 different coupes next door and it was the same). Possibly the corridor noise was due to the people staying at that time, however, i imagine that even the quietest people would still mange to disturb other guests!!
The food was below average for Sol hotels - I have stayed in 3 * and 4* Sol hotel in Spain and Majorca - both of which provided better quality food. The food variety was good but they are obviously cutting costs by using cheap cuts of meat and frozen vegetables - I could not believe that the main offering on the show cooking one evening was hamburgers and buns!! When the hotel is full the ques to get into the restaurant can go to the front door - this is partly due to the fact they scrutinize every card as you enter the restaurant (not really sure why as no-one would sneak in for the food they are offering)!!
The public areas do not reflect a 4* hotel, the main bar area is drab and in need of an update and is small for the size of the hotel. The lobby is quite nice but the lobby bar was never open and looked more of a storage area for the main bar.
The indoor pool is very small and they make you buy a swimming cap before you can go in (go to the Euro shops in town to get one rather than paying the hotel 4 Euros). The outdoor pool is large and the seating area had enough sunbeds (although this was October and the weather wasn't great)
The hotel is near to Port Aventura - use that train station to go to Barcelona as it is only 5 mins walk from the hotel - out of the hotel turn right and follow train track towards theme park. The hotel has a gate at the back which makes the walk into the new town quicker, it takes about 15 mins to get to seafront.
Overall, I was disappointed with this hotel and it is not anywhere near as nice as other Sol Hotels in Spain - in fact I would say many of the 3* Sol Hotels I have used over the years are much better in terms of food quality and service.

Room Tip: Pool view in block A if you want sunny balcony - if you are not on pool side of hotel you get traffi...

We had three adjoining rooms, it was perfect for high summer when you are going to the beach or to the the water park but we were there last week and there was not one chair between the rooms. however it was clean..... but they use an industrial strength cleaned that leaves a horrible smell in the room... we had to leave the balconey door open for most of the time we were there... breakfast was good, dinner was average, they should know their customer base ! Half term in the UK and Ireland fills the hotel so put on the waiting staff to cope please !!!

Room Tip: About a 15minute walk to the beach with loads of bars and supermarkets in the last half mile.

Stayed here for a few nights in October as a short break. It is an 'ok' hotel, there are a number of things that slightly disappointed me and stopped it from being good.

The rooms are of adequate size, clean, comfortable and as you would expect in a typical 3-4* hotel in Spain. I agree with other reviewers when they say that there is a lovely pool area (though the sunloungers look a bit tired and the railings from the reception area had come away due to rusting at the bottom of the stairs). All communal areas of the hotel are also fine and the 'English' pub is good for a bit of atmosphere. Staff are pleasant enough, especially if you try your hand at speaking Spanish to them. The hotel is ideally placed for trains to Barcelona (about €15 rtn), buses to Reus (€2.20 rtn) or walking to Port Aventura.

The downsides though were the noise - we were on the 1st floor of block A which is effectively about the restaurant so at about 7.00am every morning we were woken by what I described as the sounds of a 'barrel rolling competition'. Similarly there is not enough sound proofing so corridor noise can be a problem (though a common Spanish hotel problem I find).

On our arrival, there was a wedding going on in the lounge area and there didn't seem to be enough seating for everyone so it seem a little overcrowded.

Food was not brilliant. There seemed to be a lot of fried food on the hot selection - in fact one night they had Crispy Pancakes (which secretly I was pleased with) but the quality and selection did not seem to be on a par with other 3 star hotels I have stayed in, let alone 4. Breakfast hot selection varied every day but the pastries selection remained the same - luckily we only stayed for 4 nights as I was starting to get a bit fed up with it.

All in all it isn't a bad hotel, but it could do much better. Salou is a nice resort (off season comment - I can't say for full season) and would like to come back but I will be looking to try a different hotel.

The hotel itself is fine, nice pool area, lounge area, lovely bar, nice restaurant. Bedroom a bit small for a family of four, and very little storage and only a few costhangers. The gripes I have are with a few of the staff, miserable, especially in the dining room! I got told off twice, ha,ha. We queued for a good 20 mins just to get into the restaurant, the woman on the door was really scary, she inspected us as we came in, crossed checked our dinner card to her computer printout etc, very strict and not very holidayish, in other hotels we find arriving for dinner a pleasure, being greeted and seated by someone who recognises us after a couple of visits. The weather on our visit was rubbish, but that's not the hotels fault, although a bit of extra entertainment would have been nice, the main and most awful problem was that although it was very cold when
we were there, the hotel made no effort to warm the place up. We sat about in coats in the public areas in the evening, and even retired to bed early on a couple of nights just to keep warm!! The hotel was ok, nothing more, but we didn't pay a fortune to stay there so didn't make a formal complaint. I would go back to salou, but never in October, too risky with the weather and all the shops and decent restaurants were closed for the winter. The hotel is handy for portaventura, which was a godsend as we would have been so bored without it!

Helpful and friendly reception staff, all are multilingual. We had a first floor room in block B. The entertainment in the bar which was directly below our room was horrendously loud and went on till midnight every night, after a quite word with reception, by 1pm the following day they had changed us into a room in Block A, no fuss, no attitude, we had no further problems sleeping. Thank you Costa Daurada.
Food, it certainly was plentiful, but I couldn’t way up who they were aiming the style at. The first night was certainly the best, fresh fish, fresh chicken, Paella, piles of various salads. The unfortunate thing is with it being a buffet for every meal, and the hotel catering for as many as 900 guests when full, everything was swimming in oil.
After four nights I was craving some Spanish cuisine, or even a curry! Don’t get the wrong idea, you will never be hungry at the Costa Daurada.
If you are visiting Port Aventura they have a complimentary bus service to the park, but you must book early, don’t worry though it is only a ten minute walk.
The rooms are clean, but basic. Two single beds, a double walk-in wardrobe, old TV, small fridge, balcony, they are all the same.

Room Tip: request a room in Block A, it is much quieter
