Stayed here in 2009 and had a great time . Now it's more money for less !!
No more free entry into the waterpark
      No more free beach club
No more front of queue passes
The cascada restaurant is advertised when you book but is closed
The Italian at the hotel is worse than the buffet
The tapas at the caribe is also a non starter , greasy chicken and Ben and jerrys ice cream in a tub with a spoon in the lid for desert !! Hardly 4 star
The only decent place to eat is at the gold river hotel called opera .
Towels in a heap on sun loungers by the pool for four days now
Slept on comfier floors ! Beds are rock hard , fridge in room or mini bar as they call it heats up your drinks lovely , bbc 1 only English Channel that works on tv
Park is good if you don't mind queuing (2.30 hours for shambala last weekend )
Used to be a good holiday with nice restaurants , bars open away from the kids clubs etc
Good points about the hotel , I'm only here for seven days not fourteen and the Thompson rep gio is worth his weight in gold and should be running the hotel

Room Tip: Book into a different hotel

Visited for 2 weeks and found nothing to do in hotel. Half an hour entertainment and no kids club. Spent most of holiday walking up and down big hill to salou to find some night entertainment. Hotel rooms very basic with fridge but no kettle. Buffet dinner was much the same every night. Very noisy at night with doors slamming.

I gave this hotel an average score, as there are some great features and some real downsides to this location.
the hotel is right next to the Portavenura theme park and the newly developed water park, which is fab, your hotel room card gets you into your own theme park entrance, so no queues with the general public - brilliant.
the public areas and the rooms are spotlessly clean - brilliant
the beds are hard as iron, but similar to what you get in most Spanish hotels - OK
the staff are friendly and helpful - brilliant
food mass produced but good range and mostly edible - OK
however the theme park closes around 7 or 8pm each night and after that unless your children are young and enjoy Woody Woodpecker shows which are held each night around half nine until half ten, then there is literally NOTHING to do. There is a coffee shop that serves alcohol and pizza and while the Woody show is on, an extra bar opens up for parents, but once Woody goes at about half ten, so does the evening.
The only alternative is to go into Salou, which is fine but is a taxi which is about 9 euro each way or walk which takes about 20 - 25 minutes each way, slightly longer if you have had a beer!

This is a Thompsons hotel so trips are laid on for you if you want them, and I will review those too, however again its extra cost.

The theme park is brilliant, the shows are of a good standard and the new water park is good (keep your flip flops out of the secutiry lockers, take them round with you as some areas are slippy)
However if its ease of access to entertainment for adults and children over 10, then maybe consider the trade off you need to make to be near the theme park.

Room Tip: they pipe music into the hotel and theme park from 8am. The pool view is lovely however you may find you get music noise earlier than you want it at this side of the hotel! if leaving early (7- 8am) on departure day you dont get breakfast even though you have paid for it, as they dont start breakfast until 8am - am going to complain further about this as that is alot of money they make on a family.

We came a few years ago when and had a great time. This time things seem a bit more about getting as much money out of you for as little as possible. Some things that should be free in the park now have a charge like the kids driving school. Also little things now cost like having your picture taken with the hangmans noose. Also getting into the waterpark is now by ticket which has to got from the hotel services, last time I was all with the same card no idea why they have changed this as it took me 30 mins the one day to get tickets. Also you used to get an express pass to be used during the week that's gone too and it's 30 odd euro per person to get one. Hotel is fine but nothing special. Some great news rides in the park but they have some long waits. Overall nice but instead of getting better seems to be getting worse, less organised, less people working the rides to get people on and off etc.

I have stayed 3 times at The Portaventura hotel but this time the hotel was full of teenagers on school trips obviously unsupervised at night running around the corridors slamming doors and shouting all through the night. On our last night we had no sleep because of young adults next door partying to 6am we did complain but very little was done and by that point all we wanted to do was get home. The hotel is lovely and the food good but it is being ruined by children on school trips. What a shame.

Room Tip: Don't bother I booked 8 months in advance and asked for a balcony and pool view and got neither.
