When we checked in on our first day we thought we chosen reasonably well when we booked our two bedroom apartment in cap salou for a week of beach and pool relaxation after a week of sightseeing in Rome and Barcelona. A large airy apartment with two separate bedrooms and two additional beds in the living/kitchen area, but the poor provision of kitchen cooking utensils of only 1 pan and 1 frying pan in the kitchen meant self catering (in an apartment that was supposed to sleep 6) made it difficult to cook healthy meals and we choose to eat out 5 of the 7 nights we stayed. The noise in the evening meant that most nights the hotel didn’t quieten down until after 2.30am and even then the noise of revellers returning to their rooms disturbed us most nights. The quality of the mattresses was appalling and we ended up putting blankets under the bottom sheet of the double bed to make it more comfortable. The two single beds in the living room that doubled as sofas with a removable cushion for the back rest, was badly damaged and the slatted pine on one was literally smashed to pieces rendering it unsuitable for sitting never mind sleeping on without falling through. We highlighted this to reception three times and it was neither looked at nor fixed. In the end we moved the beds round ourselves to ensure we had somewhere to sit of an evening. Our room 1304, overlooked the back of the hotel and was strewn with rubbish and toilet rolls that had been entangled in the trees which made sitting on the balcony rather unpleasant, so we spent most early evenings sitting down by the poolside. But by far my worse experience was what happened after we checked out. We had a late flight back to the UK and had to leave the room by 10am. After another night of bad sleep we ran late and hurriedly pack to get out. In my haste I left an expensive Monsoon dress behind in error. The reception staff were completely disinterested in my telephone calls or emails and offered no assistance whatsoever. Even Head Office didn’t care, so not only did I waste 615euros on an apartment that would make a tent look comfortable I lost a £150 dress to boot.
Any upsides? The pool was nice and the mini-market adjoining the hotel stocked a nice selection of foods (just don’t expect to be able to cook them on the two halogen rings in the apartments. Would I go back to Cap Salon? Yes definitely, but I would not stay in Best Hotels Ontario again even if it was free!!
