Two families of five (ages of children ranged between 10 and 17) stayed at the Hotel Gold River for two nights from 28 June. The hotel has some excellent, average and poor features, so it comes out as average overall. I'll highlight a few of these attributes below:

Excellent:
- Location: It was a very short walk to the entrance of the Port Aventura Park. This was particularly useful when the adults and younger kids returned to the hotel, knowing that it was only a short walk back for the older kids. It was a short taxi ride to the beaches of Salou - that said, the Hotel PortAventura much closer to Salou.
- Express Pass: Our hotel package included an EXPRESS PREMIUM GOLD bracelet that allowed us unlimited access to 8 of the 10 main attractions with minimal queuing (i.e. between 0 and 5 minutes), plus one single access to the front row of the three main roller coasters. This cost us only EUR44 per person for three days - i.e. less than EUR15 per person per day. Given that the queues of the main attractions ranged between 20 minutes and 1hr 20 minutes when we were at the park, the express pass was a mammoth benefit.

Average/Good:
- The hotel layout and cleanliness were acceptable.
- The rooms were OK, but a bit tired.
- The staff were friendly and helpful.
- The breakfasts were average.
- The pool area was good.

Poor:
- The restaurant was like a boarding school canteen in both feel and and quality of food and yet the meals were very expensive. We paid EUR25 per person (kids too) for a dinner consisting of a low quality buffet that excluded drinks. My tip is to rather order a few sandwiches/tramezzinis from the area outside the bar - they were tasty and cost EUR5 each. Note that the food quality in the park is even worse than the hotel, so there is no respite there.
- There were often long queues at reception.
- The hotel was very expensive.

I thought that the nearby two of Salou was very pleasant. It might be better to stay at Salou if one could still purchase the Express pass for a reasonable price.

Was sooo excited for this holiday because me and my family LOVE port Aventura and have done for years!!! This was our 8th time staying at this hotel and this was the first time that I was a little disappointed.
What I was disappointed with was the cleanliness of the hotel and the rooms. The corridors look tired and unclean and when we got our rooms, there was hair all over the bathroom floor and on the bed which was rank! My mum and dad's bathroom tiles were covered in mold. The walls could do with a paint and the balcony was covered in bird poop. And this hotel is still rated as a 4 star hotel?!?! And they are still charging a lot of money to stay there, sooo bad!
That was the bad points of our stay.
The food was a lot better then last year as there was different food every night and it was really nice.
Staff really nice as always and friendly and helpful, no complaints there!

Park always amazing and gets better every year. Again no complaints!

Overall, great holiday but a few things need to be improved.

Room Tip: You now have to pay for your water park tickets but at a discounted price and the price for the fast passes have gone up a little from last year and is now €15 instead if €12.50 (basic express pass)

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Gold River, it was themed to perfection!!
The main building (city hall) is pretty amazing when you walk in but the rest of the grounds are just as impressive. We stayed in a family room ( 5 adults) with 2 interconnecting bedrooms and a double sofa bed. There is a little kitchenette but we couldn't find any cups, glasses or anything to cook or eat with so its a bit of a waste!! We were only there for a 1 night stay which included 2 full days at the park though so we were not bothered but if you are spending a few days and expect to cook, make lunch or even have a cup of tea/coffee- be warned!!! Overall though it was clean, spacious & again themed to perfection!!
The buffet breakfast was nice, plenty of choice and I feel they tried to cater for everyone!
Checking in was fairly quick, the staff were very helpful & welcoming! Our room wasn't ready until 3pm so we headed into the park & went back out at 3pm to get the room number.
In my opinion it was the perfect location, you come out right by Stampida so if your like me & you want to get on as many rollercoasters as possible its the best entry point!! China is close by and you bypass Mediterania which has nothing except Furious Baco really!!
I would highly recommend this hotel, I have stayed at Hotel Portaventura twice before but this one would be my favourite, mainly because of the location and the fact that it has been themed so well!

Room Tip: You cannot get Wifi unless you are in the main city hall building, they can give you a cable to connect your laptop though- just ask at reception & there is a €10 refundable deposit.

We arrived at the Portaventura train station at 9.40 but we were then advised to wait for a transfer to the Gold River hotel. We waited for 20mins just for a 5 min drive. Check-in then took ages!! There was a long queue of people when we got there. There were 4 people serving but this still wasnt enough. It took an hour for us to check in. So be warned, the entire process from arrival to completing the check-in can take 1.5 hrs.
However, the staff were polite and friendly and we were allocated a room on the 'high street'.
Room- Our double room was small but nice and clean. We were glad we didn't end up with a room in the City Hall (the main building) which was more like a hotel and lacked the charm of the smaller 'high street' buildings, and in particular, the cosy log cabins.
The hotel complex is styled in a Wild West theme and looks amazing! To me, this looked like the best of the Portaventura hotels, as the others didn't have a particular theme and therefore lacked the character of Gold River.
Food- The meals were a bit hit and miss in quality, but we were happy enough.
Location- It's a 20 min walk to the Waterpark but only 5 mins to the Theme park.
Overall despite the shakey start , I would recommend this hotel.

Arrived at the hotel and first impressions were good after a pretty warm (and extended) coach transit from the airport.

My advice would be to get a taxi transit rather than pay for Thomas Cooks inflated coach transit. Having spoken to other holidaymakers they paid around £60 for a return taxi fare which would get you to the hotel in 15 minutes. We paid around £100 (for three of us) for Thomas Cooks coach transit and although the brochure says 15 minutes transit time we were the last hotel to be dropped off which meant a 40 minute transit time. Save money and time by booking a taxi.

The hotel itself has a Wild West theme which is great for the kids with characters wondering around the complex throughout the day. It really did feel as though we were walking through an old wild west town. The buildings (accommodation) were startlingly realistic.

We didn't take too much to the piped country and western music being piped through the hotel and felt it was a bit much playing it in the room corridors until 10.00pm. Luckily the sound from it wasn't too loud in our room.

Staff - the hotel staff were all very friendly and accommodated us at every point, guest services were very good and gave us good advice on several things.

Pools - Three pools, a kiddies pool and two larger pools. All well kept and of good size.

Bars / Restaurants - the hotel has an indoor bar and pool bar which serves basic food. Both well stocked. The main hall restaurant caters for buffet food and they have an A La Carte restaurant also. Prices for drinks are similar to the UK, i felt the buffet food was nice but nothing to write home about. We didn't eat in the A La Carte restaurant so can't comment on that one.

Shop - there is an on site shop mostly selling kids toys and also sells a few basic snack and drinks. I think most rooms have a fridge so i'd advise a trip into Salou to the supermarket and stock up on cheaper drinks and snacks.

Theme Park - free entry to the Theme park and we went most days. It's a very good theme park catering for all ages. Take in the bubble show and the stunt show - they're both very entertaining and are a welcome break from the heat on a hot day.

Water Park - this is very close by (next door to the theme park) and again is well worth a visit. It has all the usual water park features and rides and again caters for all ages. A full day can be easily spent there. Appears a bit pricey at first but spending a full day there definitely gets your moneys worth.

Salou - has improved immensely since i last went 20+ years ago. Beach is a beautiful sandy beach and seems to go on forever. A lovely promenade with lots of variety of bars, restaurants and shops.

Overall we had an excellent holiday. Would we go again - Yes we would.
