Hotel Best San Diego
Ranked #26 of 93 Hotels in Salou
Reviewed October 5, 2012

We a family of 3 adults stayed at the San Diego from 28th Sept - 3rd October. We are glad that we only had 5 nights and not 7 or 14. The hotel itself is very dated and quite basic. No hairdryers, no tea making facilities, just 2 double beds stuck in a room with a dressing table and an old fashioned TV. The first night I couldnt drop off to sleep due to the people in the next room. They weren't that loud but the walls are so thin. We heard their conversations, their TV, toilet flushing, shower and to be honest we could also hear them having sex. So my advise is to take ear plugs. Apparently we were in the quiet rooms at the back of the hotel. If you were in the pool view rooms there is a nightclub open until 6am opposite, and I heard loads of people complaining. The second night went to bed as normal and we woke up the next morning with a room full of ants. They were on the dressing table running down to the floor and up the walls. Walked into the bathroom and there were more ants running up the side of the bath. That immediately makes you itch and very uncomfortable in your room. We took a video to show reception and all they did was to get the cleaner to spray the room. We came back at lunch to find them still there so the cleaner came up again and sprayed. They seemed to be all dead so again we went out and came back to find the ants appeared again. Reception didnt seem to care we asked to move room, but the hotel was full and they could move us the night before we left, so we didnt bother.
Food ok, breakfast full of fat so never bothered after the first day.
All in all I would never go back to this hotel or recommend it to any of our family or friends.

Room Tip: Good tip, dont go to this hotel

Just returned from the Best San Diego and overall had a great experience. There are good points and bad points but for us the good outweighed the bad.

Bad points first...The hotel is really in need of a facelift. The fixtures and fittings are a little rough around the edges which we expected from reading the other reviews. Also we did find it quite noisy, you can hear your neighbours easily and any noise from outside. That said it was functional, clean (the cleaners came every day) and comfortable and for the price we paid we were satisfied.

Now for the good points...We went full board and the food was great. Plenty of choice on the buffet and show cooking every meal time which included freshly cooked pancakes and omlette at breakfast, and fish and meats at lunch and dinner. The pancakes were particularly popular with us. We also enjoyed the more local dishes such as gazpacho and paella and each night had a speciality dish such as mussels or roast beef which we really enjoyed. If you are not all inclusive you can order drinks with your lunch and evening meals from the waiting staff. We found all the staff very pleasant and helpful.

The evening entertainment was also very good. We saw a Queen tribute, Parrot show and a 3 piece band plus karaoke with big screens which was good fun! Also the drinks were reasonable and happy hour ran from 8:30-10pm each night. The hotel is in a good location close to the beach and shops, restaurants and bars. The bar over the road from our hotel The Victoria was good. We also went to Barcelona for the day on the train which I would recommend.

Overall we felt we had good value for the price we paid and we really enjoyed our holiday!

Hotel looking very tired, lots of niggly things wrong. Balcony doors that don't lock, unless you have the knack, tiles loose in the pool, decor needs updating. Lifts are poor, inadequate for the size of hotel. However staff keep the place spotless. Food , ok without being exceptional, typical buffet style, always able to find something, but nothing to inspire.
All general hotel staff /waiters ,receptionists, cleaners are friendly and work hard. However the animation team appeared lazy and unprepared to earn their keep. The acts presented were average to poor not helped by a compere with no enthusiasm.
There were lots of small kids here so if you aren't happy listening to the odd temper tantrum at meal times don't go. However we met lots of nice young & old folk, of all nationalities.
Guests of all nations were treated equally,
Would we go back, unlikely but then we prefered the quieter resort of Cambrills.
However value for money.

Room Tip: quieter (after midnight)rooms face the rear.

Stayed from 22nd to 29th September.Rooms could do with an update though were cleaned daily. Walls are paper thin, there is always noise of some kind. Entertainment ends around midnight though if staying on pool side, there is noise from the Victoria Bar across the road which stays open until 6 am. Kids were well catered for with plenty of games and kids disco.Pool quite small though very clean and well maintained. Staff can't be faulted, very polite and helpful. Food was pretty good with plenty of variety. I personally may not return though seemed to appeal to some young families.

Room Tip: Rooms at front of Hotel quieter though looks out onto road.

We stayed 2 weeks with 2 and 4 years old girls.
So far it is the best hotel on my list, yes, this is 3 star hotel and you cannot expect huge rooms or double beds and changing of bedding every 3 days but the food was excellent, better than in some 4 star.
We asked for the highest floor, far away from the elevators, not swimming pool facing and we got exactly what we wanted (I'm a light sleeper and it was the quietest part of the hotel)
The bad points - kids entertainment - the activity room is opened 10.30-12 and 16-17.30, in my opinion it is a very bad time for activities as I would prefer to spend this time on the beach and use kids facilities at other times, for example 11-16 hours, when the weather is too hot (34 in the shadow) and you can only sit in the small room without any fun as nothing to do for kids upto 14 years old.
In this Kids room kids can draw, paint, play dough. I expected there would be some toys, games and books, but nothing. it didnt matter for me, my kids were happy with coloring but sometimes room was closed without any notice, on the reception staff weren't aware why and we just wasted time waiting for 30 minutes (and the room was never opened) which was very disappointing and time which we could spend on the beach was wasted.
Security - kids just can go out of the room very easily which is very-very dangerous, I think the door in kids room should be locked to avoid it.
One more negative - we e-mailed hotel 4 days before - no one answered! The question was -we arrived about 22 pm with 2 small kids would there be any packed dinner available as we missed our paid dinner - no one answered and nothing was available to eat as restaurant closed at 21.30.
But still there was very good entertainment and evening mini disco was very exciting for kids any age. We had late check out, the room till 6 pm costs 26 euro and till 8 pm - 32 but there wasn't any empty rooms for us but we were offered a free room for 30 minutes (any time we wanted) which we used before going to airport. It was just enough time to have shower and change clothes for 4 of us.
We flew to REUS airport, we booked taxi on-line to get in the hotel for 27euro and on the way back we planned to use public bus which with 2 kids, 2 suitcases and big buggy was impossible - so we just went where all taxis stays and someone took us to the airport for 25 euro, it was just 12 minutes drive.
I would definitely go again if I were to go to the same place (but I would prefer to explorer some other place, cities, countries...) and would recommend anyone.

We spent a week at the San Diago from sept 21st,our first 3 nights were hell, the hotel entertainment was very loud and went on late, there was a night club across the road that was loud and kept us awake and because the walls of the rooms are so thin you could hear every noise from the next rooms, every night at 3am we were woken by the next room getting in,tv,shouting and very loud s--. I think its time for an upgrade maybe sound proofing, and better fitting patio doors so if you don't want to hear the music you don't have to.The rest of the hotel we found OK,food was good but a bit to much garlic for our tastes, staff friendly and good location.i also new from previous reviews it was going to be a bit noisy but not as bad as it was.in all we still had a good time but would not stay at the San Diego again.

we had a lovely time at the san diego , the rooms were clean , food was very good and the staff were excellent. close to the beach and the shops too.
the only downside was that the pool wasn't very big ,or is that because it was full of children and adults playing football . the footballs were also being kicked out of the pool and knocking drinks over . after the first day there, we went to the beach every day and really enjoyed it . lovely sandy beach in the cove . the whole family enjoyed it and would definitely go there again .
