After a week spent at the hell hole that was the "sentido punta del mar" we'd have to have visited the depths of Mordor to have a similar trip. Glad to say Holiday Village was a vast improvement. Brief summary:

Reception - big, bright, staff helpful and efficient.

Bedrooms - we were on the fifth floor, fantastic apartment. Large bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen a bonus and a massive balcony. Makes a perfect start to your holiday to arrive at such a great room. Safe and fridge, tv with UK channels on.

Pool area - plenty of room so never any problems getting a sunbed or parasol. Definitely geared up for the children (as is the whole hotel to be fair) so kids entertainment all day. Not our cup of tea (and the only reason we wouldn't go back) but not totally overbearing and such a big pool area so you can sort of get away from.

Restaurant - food adequate (why oh why can Europeans not cook bacon.......), decent variety and plenty of choice. Slight issue here with their idiotic seating system - for some reason they don't like you to pick your own seats and try and herd you into the corners all together (while vast swathes of seats sit empty). Suggest being forceful early and telling the staff where you want to sit otherwise you'll be pushed into a crowded area with screaming kids.

Bars - beer great, staff great, spot on (spent some time here....)

Beach club - over the road and despite the fact it's actually only about 50m away it will take you a bit of time to get to as you seem to go through a maze. Great bonus pool area.

Overall - good hotel, probably more geared to people with kids. I'd suggest it would be nice to have some adult only areas as everywhere is swarmed with children and it's difficult to get way from them. Wouldn't go back but only because there's far too many children.

Stayed in the Holiday Village Hotel the last week in September 2012.
Arrived on the Sunday to a warm climate with beautiful sunny skys and unfortunatley on the Tuesday night the rain came and never stopped. This hotel is fabulous. Pool area very spacious. I frequented the restaurant and was very please with the service and staff were very professional. Food was very good. Outside the hotel there was local bus service to Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Fuengirola which was an excellent service. All buses were on time and very pleasant. Benalmadena had loads of restaurants and bars and the staff very pleasant. Fungeriola was a pleasant surprise, loads of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. We visited Torrmelous on the Saturday and it was very lively, spanish music and dancing on the streets which was excellent to see and the women dress up in the spanish dresses (beautiful). We really enjoyed my holday and would go back again.

This hotel looks clean but there were so many people getting sick here that the germs must have been spreading somehow. The food looked good for a few nights but after night 3 it was horrendous. Its ok if you like undercooked food and curried burgers but not for me thanks. All 4 of us got sick and we met so many others who were sick whilst staying her and here's the thing, I reported it to the reps and they told me that no one else had repoerted any sickness when I knew full well 3 others had reported getting ill the day before. I then spoke to one of the childrens club team who told me that they were strguggling to keep on top of the sickness in the hotel!!!

Hotel looks good and has alot for kids but has too many guests and they cannot keep it clean.

Would not go back here there are too many hotels out there with good reviews. The people who left good reviews just got lucky. We all got sick and been back 4 days and 2 of us still are suffering with symptoms which I wont go into if you know what I mean!!! People who left good reviews must be easily pleased thats all I can say.

We stayed here from early October (2013) for 1 week and everyhting was absolutley brilliant. The entertainment for our 5 yr old princess was brilliant and she loved it. the first Choice staff were very good and put on some great shows. Food was great every meal, no compalints what so ever and a great choice.

I did have reservations after reading some reviews on here before we went but non of them were supported with the experience we had!

Would definatley visit again.

We spent a week here - family inc 2 children (15 and 3) a week ago. It was an amazing holiday and the only faults we could find were so pathetic that they aren't even worth mentioning.

The highs were the food - 3 buffets a day, with so much variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you can't find something interesting or tempting...Hot and cold food on various display tables etc. We were nervous after reading other reviews about cold food, lack of variety and poorly tummies....we quickly realised that the hot plates for the buffet are at the far end by the hot food, it takes so long to select all the various tempting foods that it did go cold by the time you got back to your table to eat it, there was so much to choose from both english, spanish and other nationality foods, we didn't get poorly tummies from buffet as careful and selected crispier bits and in the centre of the dishes.

The italian restaurant was fun and very upmarket and again food was yummy and freshly cooked. The mexican was our disaster night - lovely staff and surroundings, but food was poor. Crab salad was just some bits of seafood sticks, chicken and veal weren't cooked (very raw and bloody), icecream was just ordinary pots emptied out from the buffet. Actually think that this meal is what caused our little boy to vomit for 24 hours.

The First Choice reps and entertainment and kids club team - definitely get our thumbs up. The weather was raining for the first few days and they had lots of indoor activities going on to help amuse the kids. The paper airplane competitions from the 5th floor were fun. The kids clubs ( Hi to Amy from Teejay ;) ) were fun and they were very professional people who made the kids have fun. Helped with settling, and also in the best interests of a child (whose mother claimed he was 3!!!!) refused to accept him into the club. There was a creche so she should have used that. The I5Live and pantomine were a real giggle - also disappointed we didn't win any of the bingo sessions.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff from waitresses, waiters, cleaning staff, bar staff, gardeners all worked exceptionally hard. Feel that the maids had a huge workload, but always friendly. Rooms were lovely and clean, and could not be faulted. Maybe could be updated but wasn't an issue.

The hotel has lots to offer and the pools are a great hit. Also the pools at the beach club - a very short walk from the village hotel. We certainly needed it after all the delicious food. The beach is a slightly longer walk but all manageable and we had a 3 year old. 10 mins at the most. The shops were a short bus ride either way - but we hired a car for 4 days to make the most of the area. Cheaper than just one First Choice excursion for our family of 4 to Gibraltar!!!! We explored Gibraltar - driving ourselves there. Amazing day out. 1.5 hrs drive and half hour at border each way. We did leave early. The Mijas waterpark was a good day out too, just before it closed at the end of the season. But think it could be very busy in summer as had long queuing systems if needed.

Thanks to everyone for making it such a memorable holiday. The downside were the rude obnoxious guests who demanded their drinks and snacks, spilt drinks in corridors, were rude to staff - but luckily they were few and far between them.

We would definitely return to this hotel and it is the first time we have ever said that :)

Room Tip: Even the rooms at the back have a lovely view of the mountain and the train line - we enjoyed watchi...
